Going forward, it would be nice to replicate John Wooden's success at UCLA, but that is probably going to be tough as I think I've basically peaked. I think from here on out I should be in the title discussion each year, but I don't know if we're going to be able to win several championships in a row or anything like that. Even if you have the best team, winning six games in a row in the NCAA Tournament is hard. You never know, though.
I wanted to comment on this part of your post SupaJ. I think one of my favorite parts of watching and following your legacy here on OS over the past decade has been the beauty of challenge you have given yourself, and how in 20+ seasons you have still managed to keep the game realisitc.

I know you wanna chase Wooden down, (which, who can blame you, you've worked your butt off to strive for something like that,) but the fact that every season and every post is a mystery, it has been so grasping to see if you can pull off a natty with your varying levels of talent year after year. It tells its own marvelous story like a novel you've written with an Xbox controller. It has been incredible to watch you over the years keep all of us intrigued, and you the G.O.A.T. for that.

Keep doing you brotha! (and keep that backup file saved 24/7, we can't lose this)

Also, how long has the Big East been so mediocre? Relatively recently or just a down year? Seeing the likes of UConn, Louisville, Nova, Georgetown, etc. hover around .500 is odd to see.
The Big East has been kind of lousy for a few seasons now, but this season is a whole different level of dreadfulness. Usually, at least Connecticut has given me a challenge, but they even look bad this year (despite a good overall rating).

I think some of it is because of how dominant we've been in conference play in recent years, having taken home the majority of regular season and conference tournament titles. Still, even in my early years at WVU, the conference wasn't great. It's a shame, but we just have to play the conference schedule we're dealt.

Georgetown has been awful ever since I came to WVU. I'm not sure they've made the NCAA Tournament once. Villanova used to be good, but they turned bad a few seasons ago, and the same goes for Louisville. UConn until this season has been good, so hopefully it's just a blip for them.

Is the 7-man rotation a new thing. For some reason I thought you used more of your depth in past seasons. Obviously the bench got some action against Princeton but in your other games seems like you starters are logging 30+ mins.
I've been using eight men this year. Pasco comes in for Pocius at point guard (and occasionally Pasco might play PG while Pocius plays SG - he's 6'3"). Charles Rickert has been playing really well, so I've been platooning him and Felipe Delgado, and because Tommie Blackshear has been dreadful and Wilkerson doesn't have the shooting ability to start for us, I've also been playing Rickert at the backup shooting guard position. Additionally, Belton Mombollet basically gets all the backup minutes at PF and C (technically PF only because I slide Edwards over to C when Mombollet comes in for Buscher) as Gary Neale, while a solid contributor in garbage time, really doesn't have the talent I'd want for a rotation player (former walk-on).

Thus, I'll go about eight-deep, though Pasco doesn't get as many minutes as Rickert and Mombollet, generally (though he's been playing better lately, so he could potentially steal some more minutes if he continues to improve).

I went eight-deep last year, I believe, as well (and I think the year before, too), but you are correct that in prior years I used to more commonly go nine- and 10-deep. I'm not really sure what's changed. I think part of it is just playing the cards I'm dealt. Neale, Blackshear, and Wilkerson just really aren't good enough to play in the rotation, and it shows when they come in during garbage time. Additionally, I've come to the conclusion that eight guys is really all I need (I've somewhat perfected an eight-man rotation in the past few seasons that I have a pretty good feel for), so I generally don't seem to go much deeper than that. Of course, this has unwanted side effects like some unwanted transfers because of lack of playing time, which I try to take into account, but not always very successfully.

Also, some of it probably has to do with the talent I've brought in in the last few years. I've brought in a lot of guys that don't stay for all four years, and this can leave us a bit thin at spots sometimes. At times I wonder if I am better off recruiting 4* guys who will stay in the program for four years rather than 5* guys who will bolt after their sophomore or junior year, honestly.

For example, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Buscher (sophomore) and/or Pocius (junior) leave this offseason for the NBA, which could leave us short-handed.

A real diamond in the rough has been Boakai Clement. He came in as an unheralded 4* player who looked terrible his freshman season, and then I redshirted him rather than wasting another year of his eligibility two years ago. Then, out of nowhere, he started tearing it up last year (as a redshirt sophomore) in garbage time, and I thought I might as well put him in some meaningful game action to see how he would do, and next thing you know he's our starting shooting guard as redshirt junior. He's really improved quickly compared to where he was just a couple season ago. He's what I really like out of my SGs...a fantastic three-point shooter with a quick release.

Thanks, man! The sliders I used were easier than they probably should've been early on as I achieved success too quickly at Princeton, but I feel like I've achieved a nice balance since then. We're really good every year, but then we have elite talent every year, so we should be good. Even with what is often the best team talent-wise year after year (which took awhile to develop and wasn't something I could really claim until the last five season, really), we still are by no means a shoe-win to win the title. It's just so hard to win six games in a row like that against quality competition.

One could make an argument that I could establish some recruiting house rules, but in reality I don't find the recruiting classes I've brought in to be anything too crazy. I'm not bringing in the #1 class year after year and I by no means have my pick of the litter. I just try to go after 4/5* guys who have me at or near the top of their lists, and go hard at them. I've never found much success in trying to nab a guy who didn't have WVU near the top of his list (sometimes, this may work, but in most cases I don't think it does, or maybe I'm just not good enough at recruiting). Thus, until a few seasons ago, I'd never nabbed the #1 overall recruit. And then, once I finally did get one (Skip Bradford), he was frankly quite a disappointment (not that Bradford was a bad player, but he never quite lived up to the hype, IMO...part of the problem is that even though he was really talented, he didn't really fit my system very well)!

      Thanks for the follow!

        vs.
        #2 West Virginia (12-0) vs. #7 Virginia Tech (13-3)
        Cassell Coliseum
        Blacksburg, VA
        December 25th, 2034

No. 2 West Virginia (12-0) outlasted No. 7 Virginia Tech 63-57 to win this year's edition of the annual grudge match between the two hated rivals on Christmas Day. West Virginia defeated Virginia Tech in last year's Final Four and also defeated the Hokies in Morgantown during the regular season last year.

Virginia Tech cut the WVU lead to two points in the final minute, but were not able to get over the hump as the Mountaineers hit their free throws and Virginia Tech missed their last few attempts from the field.

Virginia Tech (13-3) shot just 33% (16/48) from the field this evening, and 60% (18/30) from the free throw line. West Virginia didn't shoot much better (37% FG), but outrebounded Virginia Tech 40-30.

The Hokies did a good job at limiting opportunities for Shannon Edwards and Nik Buscher. Edwards totaled a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but he shot just 3/11 from the field. Buscher was perfect from the field, but he was only able to get off three field goal attempts as he was swarmed and double-teamed by the small Virginia Tech defense. Still, he totaled an impressive double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks.

Eliz Pocius also scored 14 points for the Mountaineers.

        J. Sheridan scored 21 points to lead Virginia Tech in scoring. He also added four rebounds and four steals. Derek Tafo also scored 15 points and Darren Garza added 13 points.

"We left a lot to be desired out there offensively, but I was really impressed by how well we played on the defensive end of the court," stated West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game. "We didn't allow them to get off many clean looks at all. They had a really good gameplan against us to limit Buscher and a lot of our low-post looks and we weren't able to take advantage of some opportunities from deep, but we more than made up for it defensively."

With tonight's win, the Mountaineers finish a perfect 12-0 in non-conference play. They kick off Big East Conference action later this week on Thursday at Seton Hall.

#2 West Virginia (12-1) vs. Seton Hall (6-3)
          Prudential Center
          Newark, NJ
          December 28th, 2034

Alejandro Joiner scored a career-high 26 points on 10/15 shooting to lead Seton Hall (6-3, 1-0) to a surprising 64-62 upset over No. 2 West Virginia this evening in Newark, NJ. J.R. Fiends also added 12 points and seven steals.

West Virginia (12-1, 0-1) led Seton Hall 36-28 at the half, but the Pirates outscored the Mountaineers 36-26 in the second half to hand West Virginia their first loss of the season in their conference-opener.

West Virginia shot just 35% (22/62) from the field while Seton Hall shot 47% (26/55). The Mountaineers outrebounded Seton Hall 42-25, but it wasn't enough given the shooting disparity. West Virginia also turned the basketball over a season-high 17 times this evening.

The Pirates did a good job limiting opportunities for Shannon Edwards and Nik Buscher as they were held to a combined 19 points and 19 rebounds on just 7/19 shooting. Buscher failed to score in double-digits for the first time this season (eight points and 11 rebounds). Eliz Pocius totaled 16 points and seven rebounds, but 14 of his 16 points came in the first half. Boakai Clement added 14 points and five rebounds.

"We didn't play well enough to win tonight," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "[Seton Hall] did a good job at taking away Nik [Buscher] and Shannon [Edwards], but this allowed us to get some open looks from deep. Unfortunately, this just wasn't our night as even the open shots weren't falling consistently. Sometimes, it's hard to shoot on the road. I thought we played relatively well defensively and we were strong on the boards, as you expect to see with our talent and size."

Tonight's loss is Frizzell's 200th career loss. He has a career record of 787-200.

Next up for West Virginia is a road contest at Providence on December 30th.

            December 30th, 2034

Felipe Delgado scored a season-high 22 points on 8/10 shooting, including 4/6 from beyond the three-point arc, as No. 2 West Virginia (13-1, 1-1) pulled away in the second half to defeat Providence 83-71, giving the Mountaineers their first conference win of the year after falling to Seton Hall two days ago in New Jersey.

Nik Buscher added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Charles Rickert tallied 14 points and five rebounds for the Mountaineers. Freshman point guard Damond Pasco also scored a career-high 13 points, which was key given Eliz Pociu's struggles (0/5 FG, 2 points).

Shannon Edwards fouled out after logging just 13 minutes this evening, leading to increased playing time for Belton Mombollet and George Neale.

Shantay Ingram scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Caron Lane added 10 points and eight rebounds for Providence (5-7, 0-2). Tamsir Platt and Shamell Fitch added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Providence and West Virginia were tied up at 39 apiece at halftime, but the Mountaineers pulled away late in the second half to avoid their second straight defeat.

West Virginia will host Marquette next Wednesday for their first game of the 2035 calendar year. After a 7-1 start, the Golden Eagles have lost their first two conference games to fall to 7-3.

Tough start to the conference season. I was hoping you'd get the coveted perfect season this time around! How do you think you're team matches up with the other powerhouses in the nation? Do you expect a trip to the final four in the near future?

Yeah, the Seton Hall loss kind of came out of nowhere. They’re not a bad team and it was on the road, but that’s not a game we should really be losing. We’re always good for a WTF loss or two every season, it seems, when the shots just don’t go in...

We match up well with just about anyone. I think we are definitely in the top 5 in OVR rating, maybe 2nd if I remember right. I think Florida State had the top OVR rating of 95, and we are tied for second with 93, so we’re neck-and-neck.

We’ll certainly be gunning for a title this year, and anything less than a Final Four appearance will be a disappointment. I expected a bit more drop off after losing so many contributions this past offseason, but some new guys have stepped up their games and Buscher has been a dominant force down low for us. We’re still probably not as talented as last year, but I think we’re talented enough to win it all if we play well.

I'm going to be borrowing my brother's Xbox 360 and plan on getting back into NCAA 14 and probably this so I've been curious; do you personally play all these games, coach mode, or simulate?

                      I play every single game.

I’ve used coach mode some in the past (though not in this legacy), but I’ve never really been able to get into it. I know a lot of people like it a lot, though.

I may have simulated a game or two in the first couple years of this legacy, but none since. I am a bit of a stat geek, and I like to be involved with all the stats my guys have, haha.
