      NCAA Tournament - Second Round

Eliz Pocius hit a go-ahead three with 2:30 left as No. 1-seeded West Virginia (33-2) went on a 7-0 run late in the game to turn a 60-57 deficit into a 64-60 lead against No. 8-seeded Alabama. The Mountaineers hit their free throws down the stretch to hang on for a 76-71 victory over the Crimson Tide (22-12).

Nik Buscher scored 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds and four assists for West Virginia. Eliz Pocius was the only other double-digit scorer for the Mountaineers as he scored 20 points and hit six three-pointers.

"It was touch-and-go there late," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "Alabama played really well and had us on our heels for the majority of the game."

The Crimson Tide led West Virginia 36-31 at halftime and led for the majority of the game. Alabama shot an even 50% (27/54) from the floor and 50% (8/16) from three-point range.

Senior small forward T.J. Belser was the only double-digit scorer for Alabama as he scored 22 points on an efficient 10/13 shooting, including 2/2 from three-point range.

The Mountaineers will face No. 5-seeded Saint Mary's at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse next week in the Sweet Sixteen. The Gaels defeated No. 4-seeded South Carolina 65-61 earlier today to advance to next week's game against the No. 1 overall seeded-Mountaineers.

          March 23rd, 2035
          NCAA Tournament - Sweet Sixteen

No. 1-seeded West Virginia overcame a nine-point first half deficit to defeat Saint Mary's 80-57 this evening at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY in the Sweet Sixteen.

The Gaels (25-8) led West Virginia 29-20 at one point in the first half, but the Mountaineers (34-2) slowly clawed their way back to cut the deficit to one point, 34-33, at halftime.

West Virginia took the lead with a quick 6-0 run after back-to-back three-pointers by Eliz Pocius, his only points of the game, and never looked back as they outscored Saint Mary's 47-23 in the second half to win by 23 points.

"It was a pretty bad performance in the first half," bemoaned West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "Fortunately, we picked up our play in the second half; that was one of our better performances of the year in a half of play. That being said, we're definitely not playing our best basketball right now, and you want to be playing your best basketball in March. At least we've won so far, but we're going to play a lot more consistently if we want to win three more [games] and bring home the [National Championship] trophy."

Nik Buscher had a relatively poor shooting performance (5/13), but got to the free throw line early and often (11/13) to end with 21 points, 15 rebounds, and three blocks. He was especially dominant in the second half. Shannon Edwards tallied another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Felipe Delgado added 11 points. Charles Rickert came off the bench to score 13 points and dish out five assists and Boakai Clement added 14 points and four rebounds.

West Virginia shot just 39% (26/67) from the field tonight, but over half of their attempts came from three-point range, where they shot an effective 37% (14/38), slightly higher than their season average. The Gaels shot just 35% (18/52) from the field overall and 24% (4/17) from three-point range. Their shooting in the second half was especially poor.

Antuane Pierce scored a team-high 14 points for the Gaels. Dustin Ndiaye just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds and Hollis Byerson also scored 10 points.

The Mountaineers will face the No. 2 seed out of the East, the Pepperdine Waves, on Saturday in Syracuse in the East Regional Final. The winner will go to the Final Four, where they will take on the winner of No. 1 Virginia Tech/No. 7 Virginia. The Mountaineers defeated the Hokies 63-57 in Blacksburg earlier this season.

              NCAA Tournament - Elite Eight

The Mountaineers are going to the Final Four. For the fourth time in the five seasons, and the seventh time in the last nine seasons, the Mountaineers will hit the hardwood in the Final Four as No. 1-seeded West Virginia knocked off Pepperdine this evening 72-61 in the East Regional Final.

The Waves (31-7), the second West Coast Conference opponent the Mountaineers have played in Syracuse, trailed for the most part wire-to-wire, though they kept it close. Offensively, they struggled with just 40% (19/48) shooting and 61 points. West Virginia (35-2), meanwhile, shot 45% (27/60) from the field overall and 43% (10/23) from three-point range.

The Waves did a pretty good job of bottling up West Virginia's 7'3" behemoth Nik Buscher in the first half, but he made his presence felt in the second half to shut the door on Pepperdine's season and ended with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists on 7/10 shooting. Pepperdine threw a lot of double-teams at him, particularly in the first half, but as his six assists evidences, he found a lot of shooters open, so the Waves had to back off that tactic in the second half which allowed him to get some more opportunities down low for himself.

Eliz Pocius hit five three-pointers, several of which were assisted by Buscher, and ended with 18 points. Felipe Delgado was the only other Mountaineer to reach double-figures in scoring with 14 points, including 3/4 from three-point range.

Junior forward Rodrick Meade led Pepperdine in scoring with 17 points and four assists. Brennan Carey paced the offense with 10 points and four assists and Johnnie Gourde scored 13 points. Bobbyie Enzweiler also had a nice game down low with 13 points and five rebounds.

West Virginia also defeated Pepperdine in last year's NCAA Tournament. The Waves fell to the Mountaineers in last year's second round of the tournament 83-73 as a No. 8 seed.

West Virginia will face Virginia Tech, the No. 1 seed out of the West Region, in the National Semifinals next Saturday evening. The Mountaineers defeated the Hokies 63-57 earlier this season in Blacksburg. In the other semifinal game, No. 1 Florida State will face No. 1 Duquesne. This year's Final Four field is complete chalk as all four top seeds advanced to the Final Four out of their respective regions.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell about his team's chances in the Final Four. "We hate Virginia Tech and they hate us, so that's going to be a great one for the fans. We beat them in Blacksburg earlier this season, so we have a lot of confidence, but that's a really great team that has been battle-tested in the best conference in America. We can't take anything for granted. On the other side, Florida State is considered by many to be the most talented team in the country and Duquesne is no slouch, either."

The Mountaineers have come up short of a title in their last three trips to the Final Four, so they will look to avert that fate this season. It's going to be difficult, though, given the level of talent in this year's field.

Interestingly, the Hokies and Mountaineers also played one another in last year's National Semifinal, a game the Mountaineers won 77-69 to advance to the National Championship Game, which they lost to undefeated Texas 90-88 after a missed three-pointer at the final buzzer.

This year's Final Four will be played at SEFCU Arena in Albany, NY.

                    NCAA Tournament - National Semifinal

No. 1 overall-seeded West Virginia (36-2) used an 18-0 run to turn a 52-56 deficit with 10:25 remaining into a dominant 70-56 advantage four minutes later as the Mountaineers defeated the Hokies (31-10) this evening in the National Semifinal 82-71.

The game was knotted up at 34-all at halftime, but the Hokies clawed ahead early in the second half. It wasn't until West Virginia's 18-0 run, punctuated by a barrage of three-pointers, that the Mountaineers finally broke the game open and allowed them to advance to the National Championship Game on Monday evening, where they will face the winner of Duquesne and Florida State.

With the Mountaineers' big men in foul trouble for most of the game, Felipe Delgado and Charles Rickert stepped up big-time. Delgado scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds, hitting 4/8 from three-point range. Charles Rickert also went 4/8 from downtown, and scored 21 points to go along with five steals. Eliz Pocius hit a trio of three-pointers and totaled 13 points and four assists and Nik Buscher battled through foul trouble to end with 10 points and five rebounds in a foul trouble-limited 26 minutes.

West Virginia was tenacious on defense and forced the Hokies into 17 turnovers. Virginia Tech shot an even 50% (26/52) from the floor and from distance (7/14 3PT), but it wasn't enough to overcome their struggles on the defensive glass or in protecting the basketball.

                    J. Sheridan was Virginia Tech's leading scorer with 14 points. Senior point guard Darren Garza capped off his career with his first career double-double, tallying 13 points, 11 assists, and four steals. Freshman Raitus Hawkins just missed out on a double-double of his own with 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks and sharpshooter Derek Tafo scored 11 points, but went 0/3 from three-point range, where he shot nearly 44% from on the season.

"It was a tremendous effort by the guys tonight, especially in the final fourth of the game," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game. "We were really aggressive on defense, which gave them some easy shots, but also allowed us to turn them over quite a bit. Offensively, we weren't great, but we did well enough and Felipe [Delgado] and Charles [Rickert] were fabulous. They picked a great game to turn in career-defining performances, especially with the foul trouble Nik [Buscher] and Shannon [Edwards] found themselves in."

The Mountaineers will lace them up one more time this season on Monday evening, where they will battle for their fourth national title against the winner of Florida State and Duquesne, which will be played later this evening in Albany.

Seesh, is there any argument James Frizzell isn't the best coach of all time in the NCAA?

If only it were as easy in real life as in the videogame!

I think Wooden still has me beat, though.

We got a good draw with Florida State losing to Duquesne in the other semifinal, so I am pretty confident in our chances in the title game. Duquesne is good, no doubt, but Florida State was probably the most talented team in the nation (probably more so than even my team, but they don't have a Nik Buscher!).

NCAA Tournament - National Championship Game

West Virginia capped off one of the greatest seasons in school history with a dominating 86-47 blowout victory over the Duquesne Dukes this evening in Albany, NY to win their fourth national championship in school history.

The Mountaineers (37-2) got off to a quick 10-0 start and never looked back as the Dukes (33-4) were completely outmatched from start to finish. West Virginia led 42-20 at halftime and the second half was no better for Duquesne. The Mountaineers put the game on cruise control late and cruised to a 39-point victory, the largest margin of victory ever achieved in an NCAA Tournament Championship Game.

"It was truly a perfect performance in nearly all aspects," beamed West Virginia head coach James Frizzell, who captured his fourth national championship of his career with tonight's awesome victory. "I thought we would win if we played well tonight, but everything really came together. I don't think [Duquesne] played as well as they could have, but this still goes to show that when we have everything clicking, we can be really, really good."

Tonight's victory comes in stark contrast to the first five games of the NCAA Tournament for West Virginia, which were all generally close, with only one game having a margin of victory of greater than 13 points (23 points over Saint Mary's).

Tonight, the Mountaineers turned Duquesne over 18 times and outrebounded the Dukes 46-31. West Virginia also hit 21/29 (72%) from the free throw line while holding Duquesne to just four attempts (2/4 FT).

Nik Buscher had a game for the ages as he poured in 25 points to go along with a career-high 21 rebounds and four blocks. The 7'3" sophomore center completely dominated tonight's game and the Dukes has no answers from the tipoff until Buscher was subbed out late in the game when Coach Frizzell emptied his bench as the game drew to a close.

Felipe Delgado followed up his 25-point performance against Virginia Tech with 24 points and four rebounds this evening as he continued his strong play in this year's tournament. No other West Virginia players got into double-figures scoring.

Eugene Boythe scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Duquesne in both categories. Senior guard Courtland Irvin put a bookmark on his career with 11 points on 5/19 shooting in his final collegiate game.

With tonight's victory, the Mountaineers finish the season with a 37-2 record and win their fourth national championship. Only a two-point loss to Seton Hall and a four-point loss to rival Pittsburgh, both on the road, separated the Mountaineers from a perfect season, something Texas did last season when they defeated West Virginia 90-88 in the National Championship Game to finish 38-0.

"It feels good to avenge last year's loss," said West Virginia senior power forward Shannon Edwards as "Country Roads" continued to be sung in the background. "Last year's loss was excruciating, but it just makes this year's title, and the way we did it, that much more satisfying. This is the perfect way to finish off my time here at WVU."
