Big East Tournament - Quarterfinal Round

Felipe Delgado scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds and Nik Buscher added 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead West Virginia (29-2) to a 77-59 victory this evening over Providence (16-15).

With the loss, Providence's season is likely over. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers, the top-seeded team in this year's Big East Tournament, will advance to the conference semifinals tomorrow evening.

Shannon Edwards just missed out on a double-double for West Virginia with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Mountaineers held a decisive 38-25 advantage on the glass and shot 48% (32/66) from the field.

West Virginia led 39-33 at halftime and pulled away as the second half progressed to win by 18 points.

Sophomore guard Josko Dawn scored 23 points to lead the Friars in scoring. Tasmir Platt also came off the bench to scored 10 points.

West Virginia will face Cincinnati tomorrow evening in the Big East Tournament semifinals. The Mountaineers blew out Cincinnati 97-67 earlier this season. The 12th-seeded Bearcats, the lowest-seeded team to make this year's tournament, upset Seton Hall 58-57 earlier today to advance to the semifinal round. Seton Hall upset West Virginia 64-62 earlier this season in Newark, so the Mountaineers will not have the opportunity to avenge that earlier defeat.

Big East Tournament - Semifinal Round

West Virginia (30-2) won their 30th game of the season this evening with a 90-62 victory over Cincinnati (14-17). The Bearcats upset Seton Hall yesterday evening to advance to tonight's semifinal game against the Mountaineers, but their Cinderella run ended at one game as they went down in a humiliating 28-point defeat this evening to the top-seeded Mountaineers.

Eliz Pocius totaled 21 points, five rebounds, and seven assists for West Virginia. All seven of Pocius' makes came from three-point range as he shot 7/9 from beyond the arc. Nik Buscher tallied 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks and Shannon Edwards added 10 points, five rebounds, and four blocks. Boakai Clement shot 4/8 from downtown and ended with 15 points and four rebounds and Felipe Delgado added 13 points and four rebounds. Damond Pasco also came off the bench to scored 13 points and added four steals.

The Mountaineers were effective from three-point range, where they shot 50%, hitting 18 of their 36 attempts from beyond the arc. The Bearcats were also effective from distance (7/13 3PT), but turned the basketball over 17 times

Senior forward Torris Winkfield did all he could to keep Cincinnati in the game with 24 points on 9/16 shooting, including 4/6 from three-point range. He had little help, though, as no other Bearcats player scored more than seven points.

Cincinnati kept the game fairly close in the first half and trailed 38-27 at halftime, but West Virginia opened it up in the second half to turn the game into a blowout.

Syracuse defeated Notre Dame 74-73 in the other semifinal round game to advance to tomorrow evening's Big East Tournament Championship Game. Syracuse will likely need to win tomorrow evening's championship game if they want to make the NCAA Tournament this season. With their loss, Notre Dame is in serious danger of missing the NCAA Tournament as they sit on the wrong side of the bubble in many projections. If Syracuse falls to West Virginia, there is a very real possibility that the Big East will be a one-bid league this season. West Virginia blew out Syracuse 104-59 earlier this season in Morgantown.

Big East Tournament - Championship Game

Nik Buscher scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead top-seeded West Virginia (31-2) to a dominating 95-61 victory over Syracuse (22-14) this evening to win the Big East Tournament Championship.

"It was a tremendous effort by our guys tonight," beamed West Virginia head coach James Frizzell, whose Mountaineers won their sixth consecutive Big East Tournament title with tonight's victory. "We came out a little slow, but I really liked the way we played with intensity in the second half. We took [Syracuse] out of their element on the defensive end of the court and we continued to hit shots at a high rate offensively."

Shannon Edwards added 13 points and three blocks and Felipe Delgado tallied 15 points and eight rebounds as West Virginia's frontcourt proved to be too much for the Orange, just like in their prior meeting this season. Eliz Pocius also added 14 points.

Barry Hammond scored 21 points to lead Syracuse in scoring. Iman Crawford added 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Mountaineers shot 49% (36/74) from the floor and won the turnover battle 16-6. West Virginia also outrebounded Syracuse 39-27.

With tonight's victory, West Virginia will likely secure the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse, on the other hand, is likely NIT-bound.

So Notre Dame misses the tournament with 25 wins? That seems a little ridiculous to me at first glance. What was their RPI and non-conference schedule like? If they had a less-than-stellar non-conference schedule and had very few good wins I could understand why they were left out. It also doesn't help that the Big East was nearly at a mid-major level this year.

I believe their final RPI was 54. Syracuse’s was 50. Despite also having 20+ wins, St. John’s and DePaul’s RPIs were in the 70-90 range.

The conference was a real mess this year, though like you I thought Notre Dame should’ve gotten in. They finished the season on a strong note, too. I think their main issue was a lack of any quality wins. No one besides WVU was any good in conference (and they lost to WVU), and they didn’t have any wins of note out of conference. I’m going off memory right now, but I don’t think they had any RPI top 50 wins.

                                NCAA Tournament - First Round

Top-seeded West Virginia (32-2) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 72-59 victory over 16th-seeded Stephen F. Austin (16-14) this evening in Davidson, NC.

The Lumberjacks, who defeated Austin Peay 65-52 two days ago in the NCAA Tournament Play-In Game, got off to a hot start and managed to keep pace with the Mountaineers for the majority of the game. West Virginia led just 37-33 at halftime and the Lumberjacks led briefly early in the second half before the Mountaineers took the lead once again.

In the end, West Virginia won by 13 points, but it was a lot closer than most anyone would have expected.

Without Nik Buscher's performance, the Mountaineers might have lost tonight, as Buscher poured in 25 points and 10 rebounds and shot 11/14 from the floor. Shannon Edwards added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Felipe Delgado tallied 17 points and five rebounds. No other Mountaineer scored more than six points and the rest of the team shot a combined 5/30 (17%) from the floor.

Pete Craven scored 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Stephen F. Austin in both categories. Jaime Jackson added 14 points.

Alabama defeated Saint Joseph's 81-60 in the 8/9 matchup, so the No. 8-seeded Crimson Tide will face West Virginia on Saturday evening for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen.
