NCAA Tournament - Sweet Sixteen
Nik Buscher scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to power West Virginia (34-3) to a 74-57 victory over Indiana (29-9) this evening in Charlotte. With the win, the Mountaineers advance to the Elite Eight in their pursuit of a second straight national championship.
The Mountaineers led 38-23 at halftime, but the Hoosiers went on a 9-0 run to begin the second half and eventually cut the WVU lead to as few as six points moments later. From there, however, the Mountaineers began to take control again as they eventually led by as many as 22 points before winning by 17.
Senior forward Ben Sullivan had an impressive performance for Indiana, notching a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals, all team-highs. Xavier Bernard added 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists and Majak Coleman scored 12 points.
Nik Buscher was the only Mountaineer to score in double-figures.
The Hoosiers struggled shooting the ball, only connecting on 38% (22/58) of their attempts from the field, including just 25% (3/12) from three-point range. West Virginia, meanwhile, shot 44% (27/61) from the floor and 38% (8/21) from downtown.
The Mountaineers will face Duquesne in the East Regional Final on Sunday. The Dukes blew out UTEP 100-77 in the other East Regional Semifinal today. The Dukes are the No. 2-seeded team in the East Region and sport a 32-5 record. The Mountaineers defeated them earlier this season 81-69 at the WVU Coliseum and also blew out the Dukes in last year's National Championship Game.

NCAA Tournament - National Semifinals
West Virginia (36-3) topped the century mark for just the second time this season as the Mountaineers blew out North Carolina (28-8) to advance to the NCAA National Final, 106-80.
With tonight's win, the Mountaineers will face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the National Final two evenings from now. The Yellow Jackets, who are champions of the South Region, defeated Virginia Tech 76-65 to advance.
The Mountaineers shot 51% (39/76) from the floor and hit 18 three-pointers tonight.
Charles Rickert scored a game-high 20 points to lead West Virginia in scoring. Nik Buscher tallied a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks, though he was limited to just 24 minutes of action due to foul trouble. Felipe Delgado added 19 points and seven rebounds and Boakai Clement scored 14 points. Stefon Hull also hit four three-pointers and scored 14 points from off the bench.
Eze Corner scored 19 points to lead the Tar Heels in scoring. Tim Kruger added 13 points and seven assists and Joah Fazekas scored 11 points. Lenny Patterson totaled a double-double, scoring 10 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

Yeah, it seems like all our shots are falling now. That UNC game was amazing offensively. We have the ratings edge over Georgia Tech, so we should be pretty heavy favorites.Last edited by superjames1992; 01-05-2019, 11:16 PM.Comment

(4) Georgia Tech (30-9) vs. (1) West Virginia (37-3)

NCAA Tournament - National Championship Game
It wasn't a dominant performance, but the West Virginia Mountaineers (37-3) won their second consecutive national championship tonight with a gritty 80-74 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (30-9).
Nik Buscher had another classic performance, totaling 16 points, 19 rebounds, and four steals, though he did uncharacteristically struggle shooting the basketball, only making 7/16 from the field. Senior guard Boakai Clement added 17 points and hit five three-pointers and fellow senior forward Charles Rickert poured in 11 points. Freshman guard Stefon Hull also provided a big boost from off the bench by draining six three-pointers en route to 20 points.
Georgia Tech, despite being heavy underdogs, kept the game close from buzzer to buzzer. Georgia Tech only trailed by one point, 39-38, at halftime and never trailed by more than 15 points in the second half, although they never led at any point in the last 20 minutes, either.
The Yellow Jackets used a balanced attack as five players scored in double-figures, and no player scored more than 15 points. Keyon Deren led the way in scoring for Georgia Tech with 15 points to go along with five assists. Jerard Carlisle and Ousmane Woods each scored 12 points and Vedrand Ballard added 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Bracey Connor also scored 11 points and grabbed seven boards from off the bench.
The Mountaineers outrebounded Georgia Tech 38-32 and held a 17-10 advantage in turnovers forced as their aggressive defensive style paid off once again. The Mountaineers only attempted four free throws, but made up for it by shooting 40% (16/40) from three-point range. The Mountaineers struggled shooting inside the arc, however, where they made just 36% (14/39) of their attempts.
The Yellow Jackets shot 47% (27/57) from the floor, but WVU's 22-shot attempt advantage made it such that this made little difference.
"I'm really proud of our guys, and I'm really proud of this senior class, especially," beamed West Virginia head coach James Frizzell on court after the game. "This is a tremendous accomplishment by this team. We didn't play our best tonight, but we gritted out a hard-fought victory. We weren't hitting our shots like we usually do, but we showed up defensively and executed our sets and made just enough open shots to win the ball game."
Tonight's game was likely the last time West Virginia fans will have a chance to see all-time great Nik Buscher in a Mountaineer uniform. The 7'3" consensus No. 1 overall pick in next year's NBA Draft is only a junior, but it is basically a foregone conclusion that he will declare for the draft in the coming days. The Mountaineers will also lose seniors Boakai Clement, Charles Rickert, and Tommie Blackshear (who registered a DNP-CD today), and may lose Felipe Delgado and/or Damond Pasco if they decide to declare for the NBA Draft. Delgado is a rising senior and Pasco is a rising junior.
With tonight's win, the Mountaineers finish the season 37-3 and as NCAA Champions. The Mountaineers have won two consecutive national titles and have been to the NCAA Final three years running and to the Final Four in four consecutive years.
