      Pittsburgh (16-5) vs. #2 West Virginia (22-3)

      Morgantown, WV
      February 12th, 2036

Nik Buscher racked up an impressive double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks to lead No. 2 West Virginia (22-3, 9-3) to an 81-74 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers (16-5, 8-4) this evening in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers succumbed to a 78-74 defeat at the hands of the Panthers back at the Petersen Events Center on January 8th, but the tale was much different tonight. The Mountaineers shot a perfect 24/24 from the free throw line this evening, which was a key advantage compared to their previous outing, where the Mountaineers shot just 9/11.

The WVU frontcourt was dominant this evening. In addition to Buscher's impressive double-double, Charles Rickert tallied 15 points and four rebounds and Felipe Delgado added 13 points and five boards.

Sophomore center Joey Owen scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Pittsburgh in scoring. Aron Whaley and Neal Gomes each scored 13 points, though Gomes shot just 4/18 from the field.

"Tonight is a great win," beamed West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "At times, we've struggled to make it to the free throw line this season, but we made a concerted effort to get there tonight, and when we make it to the line we always shoot them at a tremendous clip. We did a great job at shutting the door late, largely though our poise at the line."

The Panthers and Mountaineers were knotted up at 33-33 at halftime, but the Mountaineers pulled ahead in the second half, though the Panthers always kept the game within striking distance until the final buzzer, with some key free throws putting the game away late for the home team.

Next, West Virginia will travel to Connecticut to take on the Huskies on Sunday.

Yeah, it seems like we have things turned around again after a couple rougher parts of January. I’ve noticed we often (relatively) struggle during the middle portion of the Big East schedule in recent years.

This looks like a potential championship team! I'm excited to see how your team does moving forward!

Yeah, we brought back most everyone from last year's team, so that's definitely our goal. We had a rougher stretch six-year, but we've been hitting our stride again lately.

Still, though, it seems unlikely we'll win the conference this year.

Felipe Delgado scored 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals to lead No. 2 West Virginia (23-3, 10-3) to an important 71-67 victory over the Connecticut Huskies (14-7, 9-3) this evening in Storrs, CT.

The Mountaineers led 39-32 at halftime and never trailed in the second half.

West Virginia turned the basketball over just five times this evening while forcing Connecticut into 14 turnovers, a +9 margin that ultimately proved decisive in tonight's four-point victory, especially given that West Virginia struggled with their shots tonight, shooting just 40% (26/65) from the field overall and 29% (10/35) from three-point range.

Boakai Clement hit five three-pointers and scored 15 points for West Virginia. Nik Buscher tallied a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, but uncharacteristically struggled shooting the basketball, hitting just four of his 13 attempts.

Senior point guard Burton Byrd scored a team-high 12 points to lead Connecticut in scoring. Ellis Dudley, Izik Friend, and Brandyn Evtimov each added 11 points apiece.

West Virginia has five days off before their next game, where they will host No. 16 Marquette next Saturday at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

                    Morgantown, WV
                    February 23rd, 2036

Nik Buscher scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a foul-limited 25 minutes of playing time to lead No. 2 West Virginia (24-3, 11-3) to their fifth consecutive win this evening against No. 17 Marquette (22-5, 11-3) with a 75-67 victory.

Charles Rickert shot 4/5 from beyond the arc and scored 19 points for the Mountaineers and Felipe Delgado added 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Both teams took careful control of the basketball. The Golden Eagles only turned the basketball over four times while West Virginia only gave the ball away five times. However, the Mountaineers used their height and size advantage down low to dominate the boards. West Virginia outrebounded Marquette 34-23.

Junior guard Kamarr Whitworth scored 18 points to lead Marquette in scoring. Younes Munns also came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Mountaineers led 38-25 at halftime, but Marquette found great success in the second half, especially on the offensive end, where they scored 42 second half points. Fortunately for West Virginia, they were able to sink some late free throws to secure the victory, handing the Golden Eagles their third conference loss of the season.

After tonight, the Mountaineers have four regular season games remaining. First, the Mountaineers will face DePaul in Chicago next Tuesday. Then, they will head to Philadelphia to take on Villanova on March 3rd, followed by home games against St. John's and Syracuse to close out the regular season the following week. The Mountaineers should be heavy favorites in three of those games, and will be looking to avenge their earlier 64-57 loss against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in January in their regular season finale.

                        February 26th, 2036

Top-ranked West Virginia (25-3, 12-3) extended their winning streak to six games with a 79-56 victory this evening over the DePaul Blue Demons (10-17, 5-10) in Chicago.

The Mountaineers only led by four points, 30-26, at halftime, but used a quick 11-0 run coming out of halftime to push their lead to 41-26. The Mountaineers would eventually extend their lead into the 20s and would hold on to win by 23 points.

Nik Buscher had an impressive outing, totaling 14 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocks for the Mountaineers. Charles Rickert added 14 points and four steals and Stefon Hull hit four three-pointers from off the bench to also score 14 points.

Junior forward Kody McGuire scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead DePaul in both categories.

The Mountaineers held a 31-22 advantage on the boards tonight and turned the Blue Demons over 16 times. Unfortunately, they also turned the basketball over 18 times themselves, 11 of which came in the first half. West Virginia's carelessness with the ball was largely to blame for their first half woes against a team they should have beaten soundly from the opening tip.

Next, West Virginia will travel to Philadelphia to take on the struggling Villanova Wildcats on March 1st.

Nik Buscher totaled a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds this evening to lead No. 1 West Virginia (26-3, 13-3) to an 84-58 victory this evening over the Villanova Wildcats (9-20, 3-13) in Philadelphia, PA.

The Mountaineers got off to a hot start and never looked back as the Wildcats never really made a game out of it, clearly overmatched from the opening tip.

Charles Rickert scored 15 points for West Virginia and Boakai Clement added 10 points and four rebounds. Damond Pasco also added 10 points and seven assists.

Anis Paschel scored 18 points to lead Villanova in scoring. Calvin Bowden was the only other double-digit scorer for the Wildcats with 16 points and five assists.

Next, West Virginia will host the St. John's Red Storm on Wednesday evening.
