      #1 West Virginia (19-2) vs. Syracuse (11-7)
      Carrier Dome
      Syracuse, NY
      January 30th, 2036

The Syracuse Orange (11-7, 4-5) picked up a huge victory this evening at the Carrier Dome as they took down the No. 1 team in the land, the West Virginia Mountaineers (19-2, 6-2), 64-57.

The Mountaineers shot a season-low 28% (22/78) from the floor and 15% (4/27) from three-point range. Syracuse didn't shoot well, either, as they shot just 40% (23/58), but it was enough to edge by West Virginia for their 11th win of the season.

The Mountaineers sputtered out of the gates and scored a season-low 19 points in the first half. The Orange led 29-19 at the halftime break. Syracuse led by as many as 16 points in the second half and led wire-to-wire the rest of the way. The Mountaineers cut the lead to seven at the final buzzer, but it was too little, too late, as the Mountaineers had their winning streak snapped at five games.

Jason Wilkins scored a team-high 17 points for Syracuse. Roger McCurry added 13 points and four assists.

Nik Buscher was West Virginia's only starter to hit double-figures, tallying 17 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. However, his 17 points came on an inefficient 20 shots as he shot just 6/20 from the floor this evening. Backup center Carsen Lavender scored a career-high 11 points in just 10 minutes on a perfect 5/5 shooting from off the bench.

Next, West Virginia will look to get back on track on Saturday against No. 10 Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

            #1 West Virginia (19-3) vs. #10 Notre Dame (19-3)
Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center
            South Bend, IN
            February 2nd, 2036

No. 1 West Virginia (19-3, 6-3) succumbed to their second loss in as many games as they lost to No. 10 Notre Dame this evening in South Bend 78-75. Notre Dame (19-3, 8-1) trailed 38-32 at halftime, but the Fighting Irish roared back in the second half with 46 second half points to win by three points.

Sophomore guard Austen Simon scored a team-high 20 points to lead Notre Dame in scoring. Senior Atila Gates added 18 points and eight rebounds and fellow senior Ricky Bates totaled 14 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Junior point guard Corbin Hicks just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine assists.

West Virginia was held to just two free throw attempts tonight. Notre Dame, meanwhile, made 15 trips to the free throw line, and made every one of them. The Irish also shot 53% (30/57) from the floor as they were on fire from the field, especially in the second half.

"We lost to a good squad," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game, "but I was really disappointed with how little aggressiveness we showed. To only get two free throw attempts is a disgrace, and while I do think we got the short stick on some calls by the officials, we ultimately didn't put ourselves into a position to get enough chances for those freebies."

Nik Buscher was dominant for West Virginia, scoring 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and five blocks. He also shot 11/14 from the floor. However, Notre Dame locked down and sent a lot of double-teams at him in the second half, which negated his effectiveness as the game began to come unraveled for the Mountaineers. Felipe Delgado added 12 points and five rebounds for the Mountaineers and Charles Rickert also scored 12 points to go along with four assists.

West Virginia will look to get back on track next Wednesday against Georgetown.

                Better pick up a 360!

I'm actually still on a 360 I purchased around 2010, if I remember right. I had a lot of trouble with my 360s breaking early on (which they were pretty notorious for back then), but this last one I got has held out really well. Now, I've probably jinxed it...

I do have my save backed up on a flash drive, as well, so my 360 crashing won't cost me this save file, at least.

West Virginia shot 51% (30/59) from the floor, including 49% (17/35) from beyond the three-point arc. The Mountaineers also shot a perfect 9/9 from the free throw line. The Hoyas were held to just 39% (18/46) from the floor, and also turned the basketball over 20 times.

Next, the Mountaineers will take on Seton Hall in Newark, NJ.

What do we blame the Notre Dame loss on, though? Touchdown Jesus, maybe? Or maybe the refs' whistles were inoperable when we were on offense, hence only two free throw attempts?

No. 2 West Virginia (21-3, 8-3) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Seton Hall Pirates (10-12, 3-7) in Newark, NJ 66-61.

West Virginia's junior star center Nik Buscher fouled out after logging just nine minutes of game time and recorded just two points, three rebounds, and two blocks in his short time on the floor.

Without Buscher on the floor for most of the first half, the Mountaineers floundered and found themselves down 35-25 at the halftime break. The Pirates also led most of the second half, but the Mountaineers finally climbed ahead in the closing minutes and held on down to stretch to win by a slim five-point margin, even with their centerpiece down low disqualified.

Belton Mombollet scored 10 points on 5/8 shooting in 17 minutes as he helped to fill in for Buscher. Seton Hull also added 10 points from off the bench and Damond Pasco paced the offense with 10 points and four boards. Charles Rickert also scored 12 points to round out the double-figure scoring.

Alejandro Joiner and Fezzik Watson scored 12 points apiece for Seton Hall. Sophomore Ross Amous also tallied an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Pirates.

The Mountaineers were outrebounded by Seton Hall 31-27, something that has been a rarity this year. The Pirates held a huge advantage at the free throw line, where they shot 23/28 while WVU shot just 3/7 from the charity stripe.

West Virginia will host Pittsburgh next on Tuesday. The Panthers handed West Virginia their first loss of the season back in Pittsburgh on January 8th, so the Mountaineers will be looking to avenge that painful defeat.

Notre Dame looked like they were a tough opponent though - even without the refs refusing to let you take free throws. Love how two losses in a week only set West Virginia back one spot in the rankings, gotta love those. At least in college basketball the rankings don't matter as much.

Yeah, the rankings can be a little wonky in this game at times, but in general they do a decent job compared to a lot of other games, IMO. Like you said, it doesn’t really matter in college basketball, though.
