    February 10th, 2035

No. 1 West Virginia (23-2, 11-2) got back on track this evening with an 88-70 victory over Notre Dame (19-8, 8-5).

Tonight's win was a big one in the battle for the Big East Conference regular season title as it puts another game between the Mountaineers and the Fighting Irish. DePaul now sits alone in second place in the conference with four losses, two games behind West Virginia.

West Virginia and Notre Dame were locked in a tight battle in the first half, but West Virginia pulled away fairly easily after halftime, leading by as many as 20 points late in the game.

Damond Pasco scored a career-high 17 points and shot 5/8 from three-point range to lead the Mountaineers in scoring. Charles Rickert added 16 points and six rebounds and Boakai Clement ended with 12 points and six assists. Shannon Edwards added 10 points, four rebounds, and three blocks and Nik Buscher had another poor shooting game (6/16), but tallied a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. Felipe Delgado rounded out the double-figure scoring for West Virginia with 10 points and six rebounds.

West Virginia was efficient from deep tonight, shooting a cool 50% (16/32) from beyond the three-point arc. Notre Dame, meanwhile, struggled from deep, shooting 1/10 (10%), and also did not take advantage of freebies at the free throw stripe, where they shot just 50% (13/26).

Ricky Bates scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in addition to three blocked shots to lead the Fighting Irish in scoring. Atila Gates added 15 points and nine rebounds and Jovan Kelly paced the offense with 10 points and four assists. Korey Leslie also added 11 points, six boards, and three blocks.

The Mountaineers have tomorrow off before hosting Connecticut on Monday night. The Huskies were hyped in the preseason, but have struggled to a 13-13 mark so far this season. Nevertheless, they have the raw talent to go neck-and-neck with West Virginia should they put it all together.

          USF Sun Dome
          Tampa, FL
          February 17th, 2035

South Florida, fresh off their first conference win of the season earlier this week against Georgetown, gave top-ranked West Virginia all they could handle this evening in Tampa, FL, but in the end the Mountaineers (25-2, 13-2) came back from as many as 15 points down to come away with a slim 77-72 victory over the Bulls (5-18, 1-13).

West Virginia scored a season-low 23 points in the first half and were down 29-23 at the half, but scored 54 points in the second half.

The Mountaineers shot just 34% (23/67) from the floor and 27% (8/30) from three-point range. Fortunately for them, they got to the foul line often and were efficient there, hitting 23 of their 26 attempts, an 88% success rate.

The Mountaineers also outrebounded USF 35-29, but held a decisive advantage on the offensive glass, in particular. South Florida also turned the basketball over 17 times this evening, which helped to offset their efficient field goal percentage (54% FG).

Phillip Busch scored a game-high 18 points for South Florida. Wahab Crenaw tallied 13 points and five rebounds and Collis Cuic added 12 points and eight assists.

Nik Buscher tallied a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Mountaineers. Shannon Edwards just missed out on a double-double of his own with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Charles Rickert came off the bench to add 14 points and Eliz Pocius scored 10.

Tonight's victory gives West Virginia head coach James Frizzell 800 career victories in his 1,001th game as a collegiate head coach.

"It's an honor to reach this milestone, but I'm just focused on finishing the season cutting down the nets," said Frizzell when questioned about achieving the important 800-wins milestone. "I've had a long career and won a lot of games, but there's nothing I want more than to win another national championship this year. I've still got as much fire as ever for the game of basketball."

Frizzell, at just 53 years of age, is the youngest head coach to reach the 800-win milestone in Division I men’s basketball.

West Virginia has seven days off before facing Rutgers in Piscataway, NJ on Sunday, February 25th. Afterwards, the Mountaineers will host Syracuse and Georgetown to close out the regular season on March 1st and 3rd, respectively.

It’s not inconceivable that the Big East could be a one-bid league this season. Notre Dame is the only other team even on the bubble, and they are on the wrong side of it presently. The Big East is the No. 9-rated conference by RPI, behind the other five power conferences as well as the Atlantic-10, WCC, and C-USA.

Yeah, this Big East has been down for a few years now, but this is a different level. It sucks. And it sucks I managed to lose two conference games despite it, too (especially after surviving the murderer’s row nonconference schedule intact).

Nik Buscher nearly single-handily led No. 1 West Virginia (26-2, 14-2) to a slim 70-67 victory this evening at Rutgers (11-7, 6-10) as he tallied 27 points and nine rebounds, leading both teams in both categories.

No Mountaineer aside from Buscher scored in double-figures.

Rutgers shot 73% from the floor in the first half and led the Mountaineers 46-41 at halftime. West Virginia stepped it up defensively in the second half, holding the Scarlet Knights to just 21 second half points, outscoring Rutgers 29-21 in the final period of play. Rutgers, for their part, also played well defensively in the second half.

In the end, for the game Rutgers shot 50% (25/50) from the floor, a stark contrast from their first half performance.

Demond Torres scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds for Rutgers. Frederick Matela added 14 points and Levi Little scored 11 points from off the bench.

"We're fortunate to escape with a victory tonight," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "Our first half performance on the defensive end was downright embarrassing. We really stepped it up on that end in the second half, although we still struggled to shoot from deep. Nik [Buscher] was key tonight. He was really the only guy we could count on to stroke the ball. We'll certainly need to step up our game going into next month."

Next, West Virginia will host Syracuse on Thursday, March 1st.

No. 2 West Virginia (27-2, 15-2) pummeled Syracuse 104-59 this evening in Morgantown. The Mountaineers, who looked lethargic in their close victories against South Florida and Rutgers over the last couple weeks, had it all clicking tonight in their victory over the Orange (18-13, 9-8).

The Mountaineers shot 54% (39/72) from the floor and dominated the glass 48-21.

West Virginia dominated in the frontcourt. Shannon Edwards totaled 23 points and 11 rebounds and Nik Buscher added 20 points and 11 boards. Felipe Delgado also scored 11 points and Damond Pasco came off the bench to add 13 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Pasco shot 4/6 from three-point range. Eliz Pocius also had a nice game with 11 points, four rebounds, and five assists.

Barry Hammond led Syracuse in scoring with 17 points and Iman Crawford added 12 points.

West Virginia will close out the regular season on Saturday at home against Georgetown. It will be Senior Night as senior forward Shannon Edwards will play his final home game.

No. 2 West Virginia (28-2, 16-2) closed out the regular season this evening with a lackluster 70-64 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas (9-21, 5-13).

Shannon Edwards, West Virginia's lone senior, only tallied eight points and nine rebounds and shot 2/12 from the floor in his final home game as a Mountaineer.

Nik Buscher totaled 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists for West Virginia and Felipe Delgado added 19 points.

Nik Wong was Georgetown's leading scorer with 19 points and four rebounds. Irving Lalugba came off the bench to tally 10 points and four rebounds and Garrett Causey scored 10 points.

Georgetown got off to a hot start and led for the majority of the first half. The Mountaineers came back to tie the game at halftime, but the Hoyas again got off to a hot start in the second half, scoring the first five points to take a 31-26 lead. As the half progressed, West Virginia pull ahead, leading by as many as 11 points down the stretch before holding on to win by six points.

West Virginia struggled shooting this evening, shooting just 35% (21/60) from the field and 30% (7/23) from three-point range. However, they were very efficient at the free throw line, where they made 21 of their 22 attempts (95%).

With tonight's win, the Mountaineers finish the regular season with a 28-2 mark, including 16-2 in Big East Conference play. With the No. 1 seed in the Big East Tournament next week, the Mountaineers will receive a first-round bye and face off against the winner of Providence and Marquette.
