    #1 West Virginia (24-0) vs. Pittsburgh (11-14)
    Petersen Events Center
    Pittsburgh, PA
    February 9th, 2030

Pittsburgh (11-14, 4-7) gave the top-ranked Mountaineers all they could handle, but in the end it wasn't enough as West Virginia (24-0, 11-0) topped their rivals 70-63 to win the first of two editions this year of the Backyard Brawl. The two teams will meet again on March 9th in both teams' final regular season game of the 2029-2030 season.

Pittsburgh jumped out to a 12-2 lead after five minutes of play and led 20-6 at the 11-minute mark in the first half. However, the Mountaineers came back and tied the game at 24 apiece with 6:15 remaining in the half as Armondo Whelchel hit a three-pointer from the wing.

The two teams would go into halftime with the Panthers holding a slim 37-34 lead. Pittsburgh extended their lead to six points right off the bat in the second half with a three-pointer on their first possession, but the Mountaineers were not deterred and took their first lead of the game at the 14:43 mark when Predrag Gabler hit a three-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 41-40 lead. Two minutes later he hit another three to give the Mountaineers the lead for good as the Mountaineers went on to lead by as many as 12 points before winning by seven.

Armondo Whelchel was the high man for the Mountaineers as he scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Nile Stevenson played well with 13 points, six rebounds, three steals, and three blocks, while O.J. Palmer overcame a rough shooting day to record a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Predrag Gabler also went 2/2 from three and 4/5 from the field overall to score 11 points.

Amit Alavarez was Pittsburgh's leading scorer with 16 points and eight rebounds, but Hensley Stiver was the Panthers' top performer as he totaled and impressive 15 points, 14 rebounds (career-high), and two blocks for a double-double. Burton Keeler also added 12 points.

The Mountaineers had a rough going shooting the basketball this evening, especially from deep, where they only shot 3/14 (21%). Overall, the Mountaineers shot 27/65 (42%) from the floor.

Next up for West Virginia is a data with Providence in Morgantown before their potential toughest game of the season as they will travel to Louisville, KY to take on the second-ranked Cardinals on Saturday, the 16th.

Do you play Louisville again during the regular season or is this a year you only face them once until the Conference tourney?

Also congrats on getting past UConn, looks like Pitt was actually more of a challenge.

Looks like Whelchel has really excelled in his 6th man role, have you considered putting him in the starting lineup, or do you like having his offensive punch off the bench.

I actually moved my 33 game starter at SG (Taft) to the bench this past season and made him my 6th man and like Whelchel he really excelled in that role leading my team in scoring and even putting up 30+ points twice, however now he is in the mix of rejoining the starting unit at SF next season.

I face them a second time during the regular season on February 16th (the next game after the Providence game I am about to post).

Frankly, at this point Whelchel should probably be starting, but I just don't want to remove Woodards from the starting lineup. Honestly, a lot of games I now close out with Woodards at SG and Whelchel at SF with Gabler on the bench, though, unless Woodards is struggling and/or Gabler is playing well.

                    Morgantown, WV
                    February 11th, 2030

Top-ranked West Virginia (25-0, 12-0) pummeled Providence (10-13, 4-7) this evening 92-42 to earn their 25th win of the season and keep their undefeated record alive for another game. The Mountaineers got off to a hot start and kept Providence well behind for the duration of the game as the Friars trailed 43-17 at halftime and by 50 points at game's end.

The Mountaineers held Providence to 16/59 (27%) from the field overall and 3/20 (15%) from three-point range. West Virginia was also dominant on the glass as they outrebounded the Friars 45-28.

The leading scorer for the Mountaineers was Armondo Whelchel, who scored 20 points (for the third consecutive game) and grabbed five rebounds. Perhaps the most impressive performance came from junior center O.J. Palmer, however, as he racked up an impressive stat line, totaling 16 points, 16 rebounds, and three assists. Nile Stevenson also had a solid game with 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals while Deno Woodards added 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, four steals, and a pair of blocks. In addition, Fred Joiner had a decent game at point guard with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

All five of West Virginia's starters and sixth-man Armondo Whelchel scored at least nine points.

Senior point guard Tommy McKee led Providence in scoring with 12 points and three assists, but he shot an inefficient 5/18 from the field.

Next up for West Virginia is a rematch with No. 2 Louisville on the road. The Cardinals are 24-2 on the season and 10-1 in Big East Conference action, with their lone conference loss being a 85-78 decision in Morgantown on January 21st (their non-conference loss was against No. 18 Temple). Louisville has won five in a row since that defeat, though they must play No. 7 Connecticut on Wednesday before they get a chance to get revenge against the Mountaineers at home.

Yes, agreed, at least for the regular season!

Thanks. It should be fun. I barely beat the Cards the first time around and that one was at home. This one will be in Louisville.

The quest is over. No. 1 West Virginia's quest to become the first team to finish the regular season undefeated since the Saint Joseph's Hawks did so in 2004 is over as No. 2 Louisville (25-3, 11-2) got revenge against the Mountaineers for their previous loss last month in Morgantown as they returned the favor with a 64-58 defeat of the Mountaineers (25-1, 12-1) this evening in Louisville.

The Mountaineers had a terrible performance offensively with a season-low 58 points scored. The Mountaineers only shot 20/64 (31%) from the floor and weren't any better from beyond the arc.

The Cardinals completely shutdown the WVU frontcourt as Deno Woodards, Nile Stevenson, and O.J. Palmer combined for only 12 points on a bewildering 4/23 shooting. In fact, the only Mountaineer to really shine offensively tonight was point guard Fred Joiner, who scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed three rebounds in the loss. However, he did not record a single assist, which was as indicative of the Mountaineers' inability to hit shots as anything.

The Cardinals used a balanced effort offensively, with senior forward Mike Packevicius leading the way as he tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a career-high seven steals. Fellow senior point guard Herbert Bremer added 12 points, five rebounds, and seven assists and Dee Granger tallied 13 points and four rebounds.

The Cardinals scored the first seven points of the game and led 19-6 by the 12:13 mark of the first half. The Mountaineers battled back to cut the lead to six points, but Louisville extended their lead to 41-29 at the half.

The Cardinals opened the second half with a big shot by Dee Granger to push teh lead to 43-29, but the Mountaineers eventually clawed back to cut the lead to 45-39 with 14 minutes remaining in the game. From that point on, WVU's offense really sputtered, however, as they failed to keep pace with the Cardinals in the game's closing minutes. In fact, the Mountaineers only managed to score two points from the 14 minute mark to the seven minute mark in the second half. West Virginia head coach James Frizzell made adjustments in his team's plays and personnel in the second half which solved the defensive issues the Mountaineers faced in the first half, but it did little to solve their shooting woes.

"Sometimes, the shots just don't fall and it isn't your night," commented West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after his team's loss tonight. "I liked the way we picked up our intensity on the defensive end in the second half, but we just couldn't hit shots tonight. It is what it is and we'll work on it moving forward. We still have a Big East regular season title and the conference and NCAA tournaments coming up. There's plenty left to play for."

Next up for West Virginia is a date with Seton Hall on the road on Monday. The Mountaineers will retain first place in the Big East standings as a result of Louisville's loss earlier this week to No. 7 Connecticut.
