        vs.
        #1 West Virginia (14-0) vs. Georgetown (3-9)
        Verizon Center
        Washington, D.C.
        January 5th, 2030

Sometimes it's your night. Sometimes it isn't. Tonight, it wasn't West Virginia's night and it showed out on the court until the final few minutes when the Mountaineers showed why they're ranked No. 1 as they pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks of the season to beat Georgetown on the road 69-68.

West Virginia (14-0, 1-0) trailed for nearly the entire game after spotting the Hoyas (3-9, 0-2) six points to start the game. Georgetown took a double-digit lead in the first half, but West Virginia did battle back to cut the lead to 34-30 at halftime at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

The Hoyas shot 13/22 (59%) from the floor in the first half compared to WVU's 11/28 (39%). The only thing keeping the game from turning into a blowout was the Mountaineers' ability to force the Hoyas into a plethora of turnovers, which would continue to be a theme heading into the second half as Georgetown turned the basketball over 11 times in the first half and nine times in the second half for a game total of 20.

The Mountaineers looked to turn it around in the first few minutes of the second half, but instead it went from bad to worse for WVU as Georgetown's freshman point guard Elvis Lamptey hit a three-pointer from the corner to extend Georgetown's lead to 37-30 right off the bat.

By the 14:13 mark in the second half, Georgetown had extended its lead to double-digits once again as the Hoyas led 47-36. The Hoyas extended their lead to 13 points shortly thereafter.

Freshman guard Hollis Soson hit a three for the Hoyas with 4:17 to give the Hoyas a 67-54 lead. At the time it seemed to be a dagger as the coffin seemingly had been nailed shut after the Mountaineers had mounted a bit of a small run in the preceding few minutes. Instead, it was the next to last point Georgetown would score.

The WVU offensive attack came alive in the final four minutes. On the ensuing possession, Fred Joiner converted a layup among the Hoyas' trees to cut the lead to 11 points. By 2:09, the lead had been cut to five points (67-62) after Predrag Gabler sank two free throws after getting free on a fastbreak following a steal off yet another Georgetown turnover.

After another empty possession by Georgetown, Armondo Whelchel found himself wide open from the elbow and converted a three-pointer to cut the lead to just 67-65. Fred Joiner would complete the comeback with a layup with 53 seconds remaining to tie the game at 67 apiece. The Mountaineers had stormed back with a 13-0 run after being down 67-54 with four minutes remaining to tie it.

Georgetown was able to get the basketball inside to senior power forward Scooter McNurlin on their next possession, where he was fouled by O.J. Palmer (his fourth foul). Unfortunately for the Hoyas, after converting his first free throw attempt, McNurlin misssed his second and the Mountaineers got the basketball back down 68-67 with 42 seconds remaining and the ball.

Nile Stevenson had struggled all night long as he had trouble going up against the very large Georgetown front line down low. He was only 2/6 until WVU's final possession, but WVU head coach James Frizzell evidently knows where his bread is buttered as the Mountaineers' final possession was drawn up for Nile. Stevenson backed his man (McNurlin) down and turned around for a hook shot with just 11 seconds remaining. In story-book fashion, his shot was true as it swished through the net, giving the Mountaineers their first lead since midway through the first half with the score 69-68 in favor of the No. 1-ranked team.

The Hoyas had plenty of time to set up a legitimate shot on the final possession of the game, but the WVU defense managed to frustrate and stifle the set Georgetown tried to run, which forced junior forward Jaason Clement into a contested 25-footer as time expired. Unsurprisingly, his shot wasn't even close and West Virginia escaped from D.C. with a victory to move to 14-0 on the season and move to 1-0 in Big East Conference play.

"A win's a win," commented West Virginia head coach James Frizzell, "but we clearly have some things to address. [Georgetown] was able to neutralize our usual advantage down low and our guards simply didn't get the job done from the perimeter. We were terrible shooting the basketball this evening, especially from deep. In addition, we simply could not stop the Hoyas defensively until late in the second half. Something has to change and we'll definitely be watching film closely tomorrow."

Georgetown has historically played the Mountaineers tough, despite generally being a bottom-feeder in the Big East in recent years. Hoyas head coach John Thompson III relentlessly recruits big bodies to play in the Georgetown frontcourt, which tends to neutralize one of West Virginia's most important advantages most years.

The only player to really step up offensively for West Virginia was Armondo Whelchel, who logged a career-high 28 minutes off the bench and tallied 18 points and five rebounds. Whelchel played the majority of the second half, where he scored 14 of his 18 points, and was the only reason WVU was even in a position to make it a game near the end as he provided a significant portion of WVU's scoring.

Deno Woodards was the only other Mountaineer to reach double-figures in scoring with 10 points, three rebounds, and four steals, but his efficiency left much to be desired as he only shot 2/10 from the field.

7'2" junior center Pearce Morrissette led Georgetown in scoring as he totaled 16 points and eight rebounds while shooting 7/10 from the field. Morrissette was also key in locking down the rim and keeping Nile Stevenson and O.J. Palmer from getting much going offensively. Nate McCrosky also had a huge game for the Hoyas as he scored a career-high 13 points and shot 3/3 from three-point range.

Next up for the Mountaineers is a road game at Cincinnati. Ordinarily, it would seem like an easy win for the Mountaineers, but after today's struggle, it is clear that nothing is guaranteed.

            January 8th, 2030

After a scare on Saturday at Georgetown, top-ranked West Virginia (15-0, 2-0) made sure not to look past Cincinnati (7-8, 1-2) as the Mountaineers roughed up the Bearcats 79-57 at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati.

West Virginia led 42-30 at halftime and extended their lead into the second half. On the night, the Mountaineers shot 31/54 (57%) from the field overall and 10/17 (58%) from three-point land as they were hot all night long.

Deno Woodards had the hottest hand as he scored a season-high 24 points and also grabbed five rebounds as he shot 6/8 from three-point range. O.J. Palmer also had an amazing game as he recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, and, most impressively, a career-high six blocks. Fred Joiner also had a great game at point guard as he tallied 11 points and eight assists while Ethan Augustin shot an efficient 6/7 from the field and scored 12 points in extended action off the bench.

6'11" senior center Cato Boone led Cincinnati in scoring with 10 points and six rebounds.

Next up for West Virginia is a home game against St. John's on Saturday. The Red Storm lost their first two conference games, but won their last against DePaul and also defeated non-conference foe Dartmouth to improve their record to 10-3 and 1-2 in conference play.

              January 12th, 2030

Prior to conference play, tonight's game looked like an intriguing matchup, then St. John's (10-4, 1-3) lost their first two Big East games and it didn't look to be quite as much so. In the end, it wasn't intriguing at all as No. 1 West Virginia (16-0, 3-0) pasted St. John's 94-60 to keep their undefeated season afloat.

The Mountaineers had a pair of 20-point scorers as both Nile Stevenson and Deno Woodards surpassed the mark. Stevenson tallied 22 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocks while Deno Woodards ended with 21 points and six rebounds. Fred Joiner also had a magnificent game at point guard as he recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.

Tonight, West Virginia shot 36/66 (55%) from the floor and outrebounded the Red Storm 35-21. The Red Storm only shot 22/53 (42%) from the floor overall, but were lethal from three-point range, where they made 10 of 18 attempts (56%), which was one of their lone bright spots tonight.

Don Wethers was a big reason why as he shot 4/5 from beyond the three-point arc and scored a team-high 20 points to lead the Red Storm.

Next up for West Virginia is a date with Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in what could certainly prove to be an interesting matchup.

Wow, what a comeback against Georgetown. Down 13 with 4 minutes left and win. That's incredible.

Look like you might be able to go through the season undefeated. At this rate a #1 seed in the tournament is practically a guarantee!

Yeah, that was crazy. I don't think I have ever seen a comeback like that in this game.

An undefeated season is certainly possible (no doubt I will be favored in every game remaining given this team has the highest OVR rating in the country). With the way the team is playing, a #1 seed looks quite likely, too, but you never know.

No. 1 West Virginia (17-0, 4-0) cruised to yet another victory this Monday evening as they comfortably defeated Syracuse (10-6, 1-3) at the Carrier Dome 86-69.

West Virginia used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Orange, with Fred Joiner leading the way with 18 points, five assists, and three steals. O.J. Palmer recovered from a rough start to the game to record 16 points, five rebounds, and a career-high six blocks while Nile Stevenson added 14 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Predgrag Gabler also scored 13 points while sixth man Armondo Whelchel recorded 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

The Mountaineers were vicious tonight when it came to protecting the rim as they racked up a season-high 11 blocks in the 17-point victory. The Mountaineers also shot 32/58 (55%) from the floor and 7/14 (50%) from three-point land.

Junior forward Wil Lawson led the Orange with 12 points and seven rebounds. Ajou Byrd also scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds while Tony Sorenson added 11 points and three rebounds.

West Virginia will host Marquette on Saturday in their next game. The Golden Eagles are only 4-10 at the moment as they have had a rude awakening in this year of rebuilding, rather than reloading, after losing a lot of talent to graduation this past offseason.

No. 1 West Virginia (18-0, 5-0) has struggled with Marquette (4-12, 1-4) since joining the Big East, but this year the Golden Eagles are undergoing one of their worst seasons in recent history. Tonight, it showed as West Virginia wiped the floor with them 84-52.

The Mountaineers racked up a 21-4 assist-to-turnover ratio this evening and outrebounded Marquette 36-23. The Mountaineers also shot 34/65 (52%) from the floor and 8/16 (50%) from three-point range.

Nile Stevenson found himself in foul trouble for much of the night and was only able to log 20 minutes, but in those 20 minutes he was spectacular as he shot 8/10 from the field and tallied 18 points and eight rebounds. Fred Joiner also played very well as he added 14 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Happy Olson also delivered a surprise from deep on the bench as he shot 6/6 from the field and scored a career-high 12 points to go along with three rebounds.

Sophomore guard Lamar Jensen led Marquette in scoring with 14 points and three rebounds. Freshman forward Allen Sockwell was the only other double-figure scorer with 10 points.

West Virginia will face their toughest test of the season on Monday as they will host No. 7 Louisville, who is also rolling through Big East Conference play so far this season.

                                January 21st, 2029

No. 1 West Virginia (19-0, 6-0) handed No. 4 Louisville (19-2, 5-1) its first conference loss of the season this evening in Morgantown as the top two teams in the Big East Conference and two of the top four teams in the nation clashed on a Monday night with the Mountaineers prevailing 85-78.

The two teams battled hard all night, but WVU was able to turn its five-point halftime lead into a 10-point lead early in the second half. However, the Cardinals were resilient and bounced back to tie the game at 66 apiece with 7:30 remaining. Mamadou Stapley hit a three-pointer with 4:15 remaining to give the Cardinals a 72-69 advantage, their first lead since early in the game. The Mountaineers would not be deterred, however, as WVU's Fred Joiner hit a three of his own on the ensuing possession to tie the game once again at 72 apiece.

Louisville would find itself ahead again with 1:38 remaining as Mike Packevicius hit a turn-around J from the key to give Louisville a 76-75 lead. The Mountaineers once again knew where their bread was buttered as Nile Stevenson got the nod on the Mountaineers' next possession and hit a shot from the post with 1:12 remaining to give the Mountaineers a 77-76 advantage.

Magic did not strike twice for Louisville's Packevicius as his three-point attempt with 38 seconds remaining was amiss and the Mountaineers sank free throws to ice the game and win by seven points.

"Tonight was a great win over a great team," beamed WVU head coach James Frizzell. "[Louisville] has a great squad and they'll give us a run for our money when we play them later this season in Louisville, I'm sure."

Armondo Whelchel was the leading man for West Virginia as he scored 21 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Nile Stevenson also played well as he tallied 19 points and four rebounds. Fred Joiner paced the offense with 11 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals while Predrag Gabler added 13 points and hit three three-pointers.

Mike Packevicius led Louisville in scoring with a game-high 22 points and four assists. Power forward Dee Granger totaled 12 points, six boards, and three steals while fellow big man Hilton Castro tallied 11 points and six rebounds. Mamadou Stapley also added 12 points and three rebounds of his own from off the bench for the Cardinals.

West Virginia shot 30/57 (53%) from the field overall and 8/15 (53%) from three-point range in this one as the offense was clicking on all cylinders for most of the game. They also held a decisive advantage on the boards, where they outrebounded the Cardinals 31-21.

Next up for West Virginia is a tough road game against Notre Dame in South Bend.
