    Niagara (5-1) vs. #1 West Virginia (6-0)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    December 1st, 2029

Niagara came into this one with a surprising 5-0 mark, but the Purple Eagles couldn't stand up to a road date with top-ranked West Virginia (6-0) as they fell 68-50 in Morgantown.

Niagara (5-1) did not play poorly and only trailed 30-24 at halftime. West Virginia extended the lead after the half, but the Purple Eagles went on a run to cut the lead to just two points, 45-43, at one point. However, from that point on, West Virginia went on a 23-7 run to put away the game and hand the Mountaineers their sixth victory of the young season in as many tries.

The Mountaineers held Niagara to just 33% shooting and 5/19 (26%) from three-point range. West Virginia was not particularly adept at offense themselves this evening, but they did shoot well (15/16) at the free throw line and limited their turnovers.

O.J. Palmer was West Virginia's leading scorer as he poured in 14 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks (career-high). Armondo Whelchel had another solid game off the bench as he added 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists while junior point guard Fred Joiner ended with 12 points, four assists, and two blocks (career-high). Deno Woodards also added 10 points.

Kyle Falls led Niagara in scoring with 13 points and four steals.

Next, West Virginia hosts Cornell on December 4th.

Yeah, by season's end this team will probably be 96 OVR, which will be the best I've had by a couple OVR points. A National Championship is a goal and anything less than a Final Four will frankly be a catastrophe.

It's interesting that I'm now starting to mostly recruit 5* All-American players, so my teams are slowly starting to become better and better (IIRC, guys like Stevenson, Woodards, and Palmer were 4* guys). Of course, their potential rating matters a lot, too, by the time they are in their junior and senior years.

I feel like this question may have been asked before, but at this point how do you go about creating your schedule?

Your lineup looks great top to bottom, anything south of a Title feels like a missed opportunity now it seems.

So far so good. The real test will be the Big East. But with only a few teams in the Top 25 it doesn't look like you'll have too much trouble. Maybe you'll get to play Duquesne for the National Championship. That would be a fun game to watch!

I usually use the CPU-generated schedule and change it up some (add Marshall and Virginia Tech, etc.). This year I didn't do much aside from switch a few games around (added Marshall and Virginia Tech and also switched out a few cupcakes for some decent mid-majors). I probably should have added a non-conference tournament in there and maybe a marquee matchup, but oh well. What is done is done.

Yeah, the top few teams in the Big East are really strong, as usual, but the bottom half of the conference looks dreadful this season. Marquette and Pittsburgh sucking this year isn't helping things in that regard. What a difference a year makes...

                  December 4th, 2029

No. 1 West Virginia (7-0) delivered an epic defensive beatdown this evening to keep their undefeated season alive as they throttled visiting Cornell 68-25. Cornell has shown themselves to be one of the worst teams in the country this year and it showed tonight as they took on the presumed best team in the country.

The Big Red (1-10) shot 8/38 (21%) from the field and were forced into committing 18 turnovers. They were also far from efficient at the foul line, where they only made eight of their 15 free throw attempts.

The Mountaineers did not have the finest offensive outing themselves, but they forced Cornell into one of the lowest scoring efforts of the shot clock era, so the game was never in doubt. WVU led 33-10 at halftime and only extended their lead after halftime, when they outscored Cornell 35-15.

Cornell had no players record more than four points in this game.

Predrag Gabler led the Mountaineers in scoring with 13 points. O.J. Palmer added 11 points, four rebounds, and four steals and Armondo Whelchel came off the bench to also record 11 points to go along with four rebounds.

Next up for West Virginia is undefeated 6-0 Georgia in Athens in what should be the Mountaineers' toughest test of the season up to this point.

Not a single player scored more than 4 points? That is just plain bad. I don't think I've ever watched a game where a team shot that bad for the entire game

Yeah, that was nuts. Cornell is just awful and combined with the turnovers it was ridiculous. I think they were a 64 OVR team, so 30 points lower than my team.

Yeah, we didn't allow them much of anything. A lot of times we'll play smothering defense, but we will usually allow the opponent to break out on a few runs. That did not happen tonight.

They say basketball is a game of runs. Tonight was just yet another example of the truth of that statement. No. 1 West Virginia (8-0) looked left for dead. Fellow undefeated Georgia (6-1) was on a tear for the first three-fourths of the game, but the Mountaineers came up big when it really counted.

Georgia had led throughout the game and led 46-41 at halftime after a tremendous offensive performance that saw them shoot 15/23 (65%) in the first half, including 5/6 (83%) from three-point range. However, the Mountaineers hit the low-water mark with 10:37 left in the game, when the Bulldogs hit a basket to go up 68-54. The low-water mark didn't last for long, however, as WVU point guard Fred Joiner hit a three-pointer on the ensuing WVU possession to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 11 points.

With 8:17 left in the game, Joiner came up big once again as he hit an open three-pointer in transition to cut the Georgia lead to just six points at 73-67. Then it was Nile Stevenson's turn to come up big. Stevenson hit a turnaround shot to cut the lead to 73-71 with 6:42 to go, but it was his putback on a free throw miss that gave the Mountaineers their first lead of the game with 6:02 left and the score 74-73. Georgia battled back to tie the game at 75 apiece, but Fred Joiner hit a three-pointer to put the Mountaineers up 80-75 with 3:39 remaining and Deno Woodards deflated all of Georgia's hopes with a dagger three to put WVU up 85-75 with 2:09 left.

At the game's end, the Mountaineers claimed a 90-78 victory and ended the game on a shocking 28-5 run.

After shooting 65% in the first half, the Bulldogs ended the game shooting only 49% from the field. In the second half, WVU held Georgia to only 11/30 (37%) from the field.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers were lights-out on offense throughout the game, but particularly so in the second half. The Mountaineers shot 30/54 (56%) from the field and 13/18 (72%) from three-point range over the course of the game. WVU also shot 17/23 (74%) from the free throw stripe.

"We never had any problem whatsoever tonight shooting the basketball or running out offensive sets," explained Mountaineers head coach James Frizzell. "Our issues were squarely on the defensive end. We were really poor there tonight, but we shaped up in the final 10 minutes as I played around with lineups and tried to get something going. That was an impressive run to end the game. I've never been a part of anything like that that I can remember against a quality team like Georgia."

WVU's bigs were mired in foul trouble for much of the game. O.J. Palmer picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and was sent to the bench. Little did the 7'0", 291-pounder know that that would be the final time he would see the floor. Coach Frizzell moved to a smaller lineup with Armondo Whelchel coming in at power forward and Nile Stevenson sliding over to center. Matt Blanchard also came in at shooting guard to deliver some quality minutes early in the WVU run with starter Predrag Gabler returning later in the game. Theron Dux also saw some time during the run and was impressive distributing the basketball, as usual, with five assists in limited action.

Armondo Whelchel was especially impressive as he shot 6/9 from the field in a career-high 28 minutes to record 21 points and four rebounds.

"He's just too good to keep off the floor and on the bench for most of the game," responded WVU's Frizzell to questions about Whelchel's increasing game time this season. The 6'9" sophomore small forward has seen increased playing time as of late with his average moving up to 18.6 minutes per game as of this past game. He's also now tied for second on the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game. Frizzell continued, "On most every team in the country, he'd be starting, but we've got a senior three-year starter at his position, so he'll have to wait. Nevertheless, I plan to continue to increase his minutes this year as he has the size to also see significant time at power forward."

Whelchel is an interesting case and a bit of an anomaly in Frizzell's system, which usually sees a small forward that can stroke the three with great regularity, such as Deno Woodards or D.C. Montgomery. Whelchel isn't a bad shooter, but his shot is awkward and long and he really can't make threes consistently unless he's wide open and usually only in the corners. However, Whelchel is very quick with great acceleration, and that combined with his size makes him a lethal penetrator and slasher to the hoop. He also has great post moves for his position, which makes him a lethal all-around threat.

Fellow small forward Deno Woodards also had a fantastic game as he hit 5/6 from three-point range and totaled 17 points and six rebounds. Fred Joiner also paced the offense with 17 points, three assists, and three steals while Nile Stevenson had a great balanced outing with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks.

Georgia junior shooting guard Benjamin Tamir was the game's leading scorer as he scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs. Tracy Boggan also scored 17 for the Bulldogs while Moses Reyes added 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Freshman Domonic Lamptey also scored a career-high 12 points from off the bench.

Next up for West Virginia are the Jacksonville Dolphins out of the Atlatnic Sun Conference.

Your team came up huge when it mattered the most. True sign of a championship caliber team right there. Great comeback win

Of course I just got spanked by Georgia 101-64. But were not going to talk about that lol
