Virginia Tech in the Sweet Sixteen? Madness I say.

Good luck against San Diego State. Just reiterating what everyone else has already said, it's a matter of if you'll enjoy playing out the schedule at a smaller conference. With your prestige and the recruiting skills at your disposal, the conference games might become a cakewalk and then playing them out may become humdrum. Personally, I feel like you still had the whole dominant the Big East schedule feat to attain left on your checklist, so if it would up to me I would have stayed.

I agree that you need to only make that change if it will still have you firing up the game. I like the idea of heading to UNCG, but if you think you have your most talented team upcoming, why not stay and make another run for your second championship...unless you already achieve that this season then you HAVE to stay and try to repeat.

Btw. Congrats on 200 pages! This is incredible and you are an OS legend.
        Thanks, man!

Yep, and it happens far too much in this game. Oh well, the NCAA Tournament selection process is pretty difficult to code, I'd guess. All in all, it usually does an okay job.

In my opinion, when the UNCG job opens up, look at your team at WVU and if you think that you can do something special with them, I would stay and look for UNCG down the road. And if you think that there isn't anything for you at WVU anymore, it might be time to make the move. At the end of the day, waytofailself is right when he said just do whatever keeps you playing the game and having fun.
Thanks. Yeah, it's one of those things where you can always regret leaving. I still kind of regret leaving Princeton. I'm not sure if I should have really left, but I did and here I am. I've still had plenty of fun, as evidenced by the fact that I'm still coaching a decade later (in game years and three years in real years!). Then again, playing Ivy League Conference games at Princeton started to get old quite fast, but I did love the Jadwin Gym! It was a pretty solid facility for a smaller conference school, which was nice.

Wouldn't it be ironic if I left WVU at some point to head back to Princeton? I toyed with that idea one time when the job was open, but I didn't pull the trigger.

Oh, yes, huge upset for them!

It is rather unfortunate that Tennessee is in my bracket, though, to be honest.

Yeah, and I think I am going to stay, after consideration.

I'm hoping next year I can finally field a dominant team. We'll see. Losing Barry George will be a loss, but everyone else is easily replaceable. Clemmons is a bench player that doesn't see the court that much, anyways, and Leandro Summers might actually be an improvement over Randall Norton.

No. 6-seeded West Virginia (29-12) won its 29th game of the season this evening as the Mountaineers upset the No. 2-seeded San Diego State Aztecs (27-8) 69-51. The Mountaineers got off to a hot start and San Diego State never really got into the flow of things before it was too late. WVU led 40-18 at halftime and cruised for much of the second half.

West Virginia out-rebounded the Aztecs 48-23. Tre Welch and Len Shields were instrumental in rebounding the basketball for the Mountaineers as they combined for 29 rebounds. Welch tallied 16 points and 17 rebounds on the night, his 17 rebounds being a career-high for the freshman center. Shields ended the nigh with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals. This is Shields' sixth game in a row with at least 10 points and 12 rebounds. D.C. Montgomery also added 14 points and three boards for the Mountaineers.

San Diego State's leading scorers were Dustin Brand and Jerrod Prato, who both scored eight points.

The Aztecs' offense struggled mightily for most of the game, particularly in the first half. In total, San Diego State shot 36% from the floor, but only two-for-17 from three-point range. The Aztecs also only made it to the free throw line 10 times, seven of which they made.

With the victory the Mountaineers will face off against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday evening in the Midwest Regional Final. The Volunteers are the #1 seed in the Midwest Region and have scored in the triple digits in each of their first three NCAA Tournament games. Tennessee ousted Wright State in the first round 110-51, Illinois in the second round 106-81, and Charlotte in the Sweet Sixteen 101-68. The Volunteers are 25-5 on the season and came into the Big Dance as the #1-ranked team in all of the major polls. Tennessee is first in the nation in scoring at 91.7 points per game while only allowing their opponents 69.7 points per game, giving them an average margin of victory of 22 points! The winner will advance to the 2025 NCAA Final Four in Guilderland, NY.

Yeah, the Final Four gets hosted in some odd places later on in legacy, unfortunately. I think it's just kind of random. It seems like it was held in Albany earlier this legacy, too...

                    Sommet Center
                    Nashville, TN
                    March 29th, 2025

West Virginia (29-13) ran into a buzzsaw. Top-seeded Tennessee (26-5) continued to roll through its competition as the Volunteers defeated the Mountaineers tonight by a final score of 89-79.

The West Virginia defense performed admirably, considering the circumstances. Tennessee had scored in a triple digits in its first three NCAA Tournament games. Nevertheless, the Volunteers still managed to score 89 points and shot 51% from the field and nine-for-16 from three-point range. The Volunteers also made 22 of their 30 attempts from the free throw line.

"They're just really good," commented Coach Frizzell after his team's loss. "We played well offensively, for the most part, and I don't think we were bad on the defensive end by any means, but if you give [Tennessee] one inch of room they are going to shoot a jump shot over your heads. There's not much you can do and you really can't expect to beat them unless you play a perfect game."

The Mountaineers did play a perfect game early on as they shot out to an early lead, but the Volunteers quickly recovered to put the Mountaineers in a nine-point hole at halftime. Tennessee would extend the lead to as many as 18 points in the second half, but WVU kept on coming back as the Volunteers were never able to turn this one into a blowout.

One reason WVU stayed in the game was their offensive rebounding. WVU shot an unimpressive 39% from the floor, but they managed 70 shot attempts, largely due to 14 huge offensive rebounds. Tennessee only recorded four offensive rebounds. Overall, both teams would tally 36 boards apiece.

Theodore Crandle led Tennessee with 22 points, three rebounds, nine assists, and five steals. Rashaun Sparks added 18 points while Blaise Halsell recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Ime Cottrill also added 10 points, five boards, and three assists from off the bench.

Freshman guard Leandro Summers had a career night for the Mountaineers as he scored a career-high 17 points and nailed five shots from downtown. D.C. Montgomery overcame a horrendous shooting night to record 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists while Len Shields tallied yet another double-double with 12 points, 10 boards, and three steals. Barry George ended his career on a bit of a sour note. The senior point guard hit four of his seven field goal attempts for 11 points and seven assists, but he also turned the ball over seven times, five of which came in the first half.

Tennessee's full-court pressure had a lot to do with George's turnovers and, collectively, it forced the Mountaineers into 15 giveaways.

Tennessee will advance to the Final Four to take on Virginia Tech, who defeated Washington in the South Regional Final.

Man it's always disappointing to be one game short of the final four but it definitely was a very good season for WVU. Good luck recruiting for next season!

On the bright side, you beat the spread? Especially in what can only be characterized as a hostile venue.

Tough loss to the Vols, they really shot lights out. Montgomery had a rough game, and it sucks for George to end his college career with all those turnovers.

Don't worry though because Virginia Tech will avenge their Black Diamond Brothers! Seriously, the Hokies are in the Final Four. I don't think it has sunk it just yet.

We were pretty competitive. I wasn't disappointed in our performance and, like you said, the game was played in the Volunteers' home state.

And thanks regarding the 2,000 posts. That sneaked up on me!

Well, we'll see about that Hokies. I don't think anyone can stop Tennessee. I think they are a 96 OVR.
