Notre Dame (17-7) vs. #16 West Virginia (20-8)
      WVU Coliseum
      Morgantown, WV
      February 11th, 2025

Notre Dame (17-7, 8-4) pulled off a season sweep over the West Virginia Mountaineers (20-8, 6-6) this evening as the Fighting Irish recovered from a 37-31 halftime deficit to defeat WVU 81-74.

After scoring 25 points against the Mountaineers in their earlier matchup in early January, Notre Dame's Cornelius Bracy led the Fighting Irish once again with 26 points on eight-for-14 shooting, including five-for-three from long-distance. Lodrick Wyatt also added 17 points and eight assists from the point guard position.

Despite a poor shooting night, Randall Norton led WVU in scoring with 14 points. Barry George added 12 points and five assists while D.C. Montgomery ended with 11 points and six boards.

The Mountaineers were held to just 39% shooting from the floor and only made four of their 23 attempts from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers did do well from the charity stripe, where they hit 22 of 27, but 19 turnovers ultimately proved to be the final nail on the coffin from this WVU basketball team.

With this loss, the Mountaineers fall to 20-8 and will look to bounce back at Providence on Sunday.

            February 16th, 2025

West Virginia (21-8, 7-6) bounced back tonight with a 83-77 victory over the Providence Friars (10-14, 4-8) this evening. West Virginia led throughout, but was also never able to pull away from the ailing Friars, but in the end it was the Mountaineers' 21st win of the season.

Barry George led the Mountaineers with 22 points and eight assists. The senior point guard hit all 11 of his free throw attempts and was only one point short of his career-high of 23 points. D.C. Montgomery added 20 points and three rebounds while Randall Norton added 16 points. Len Shields struggled down low all game long for the Mountaineers as he only shot two-for-11 while Tre Welch was sidelined for much of the game with foul trouble.

Mindaugas Matela led Providence with 22 points. Antwan Chan added 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

West Virginia will have five days off before hosting Pittsburgh next Saturday.

This makes me want to pop my 2K8 in and start a dynasty haha.

This is gonna be a fun stretch to read up on, if I was a tourney advisor or whatever, you might be a bubble team lmao. Impress me in the Big East tournament. Definitely following this, super great read. Glad you kept this going.

Thank you sir for helping these last few days just fly by as I went from start to finish. Being from the Green Bay Area I'm hoping your SG gets some development in during his redshirt year and is able to contribute going forward.

Where do you take the small logos from? Do you resize them or just find smaller ones? If so, what size do you search for? Looking to spice up my posts in my recaps. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

We're fairly locked into the tournament, actually, because our RPI is in the top 15 as my SOS was amazing in the non-conference portion. I also own a victory against a top five team (Clemson). Despite my mediocre record, I think I'm predicted to be a #5 seed right now, mostly due to SOS.

And you should pop 2K8 back in. Best game ever!

Dux got some playing time last year as a freshman and shot just 29% from the field, but his redshirt year should help and he will probably see the court again next year. We'll see, though, because I think I have a couple pretty good guards coming in with this recruiting class.

I actually pull them straight from ESPN.com and save them to my Photobucket account (you could use any image hosting site such as Imageshack, Photobucket, IMGur, etc.

It is somewhat convoluted to explain, but I basically pull them off from the last team that played the team I want's logo's site. Basically, if I want WVU's l realize they played Marshall last (on Wednesday night). Thus, I go to Marshall's site and click save the WVU logo's URL that is in the top left corner (HERE). Apparently, they have changed the WVU logo on ESPN.com to blue, but I still use the gold one.

I would just use the regular logo that shows up on the front of the page as that is what I originally used, but then ESPN made those logos bigger than I wanted, so now I go through this convoluted process to get them (though, frankly, I rarely need to go to ESPN to get new logos now since my Photobucket account has the logos from 140+ teams, I believe).

The Mountaineers led by as many as 18 points midway through the second half and looked to be running away with the game until Pittsburgh got hot shooting the basketball in the late going. The Panthers would end the game going 11-for-25 from three-point range and would cut the lead to as few as six points in the closing minutes. Unfortunately for them, it turned out to be too little, too late as WVU hit their free throws and escaped with a 10-point victory over their regional rival.

The Mountaineers held a huge advantage on the glass against Pittsburgh. WVU outrebounded the Panthers 35-19 and were absolutely dominant on the offensive glass.

The Mountaineers were led by impressive performances from D.C. Montgomery, Len Shields, and Tre Welch. Montgomery scored a game-high 21 points and got to the free throw line early and often. Len Shields had a tremendous game scoring and on the glass as he tallied 17 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Tre Welch just missed out on a double-double as he tallied 12 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and a pair of blocks in 31 minutes of playing time.

Pittsburgh was led by Jamaal Mobley and Mark Trammell, who both scored 16 points. Verano Williams added 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

West Virginia will face Rutgers on Tuesday.

What does the mid-major top 20 look like this late in the season?!? How are your former employers doing?

I like seeing Charlotte ranked. I have a soft spot for the 49ers and hopefully would like to grab that job myself somewhere down the line.

I am a little further along in my legacy than my updates suggest, so I am currently about to start conference tournaments.

Anyways, without spoiling anything, at this point Siena is ranked #1 in the mid-major poll. They dominated me 83-69 earlier this season in Morgantown, but that isn't appearing to be a bad loss at this point. Loyola Maramount is ranked second, followed by North Texas, Pepperdine, and New Orleans.

San Francisco had a disappointing season as they finished 14-15 and only 6-8 in the WCC. Ratings wise, they are the second best team in the WCC behind Gonzaga, but they didn't play like it this season. They went 29-7 last season, though, which was great.

Princeton had a solid season, finishing mid-pack in the Ivy League at 15-14 and 8-6 in conference play. It was a bit of a disappointment, though, as they are rated three points higher than the next best team in the conference, so finishing mid-pack is not exactly impressive. They went 17-12 last season.

You might be interested in Bucknell, since you are there in your coaching legacy at the moment. The Bison had a good season, going 19-8 (12-2) and finishing second in the Patriot League behind American (who went 26-5 (14-0) and is ranked 18th in the mid-major poll).

Yeah, they have a solid team and the A-10 has become a really good conference in my game.

                              February 25th, 2025

The last time WVU faced off against Rutgers in Piscataway was in January 2023 when the Scarlet Knights edged a superior WVU team 61-60. In 2022, the Mountaineers also faced off against Rutgers on the road and lost 58-55. One has to go back to January 6th, 2021 to see the last time WVU came away with a victory in Piscataway as WVU defeated Rutgers 71-62 in that one.

Nevertheless, Rutgers came into this one 9-18 and despite WVU's history in Piscataway, no one really expected the Scarlet Knights to win, yet alone be competitive. They were wrong.

Not only were the Scarlet Knights (10-18, 4-11) competitive. They pretty much dominated the game! Rutgers lit it up from deep as they shot 10-for-18 from distance as they defeated WVU 81-68. This marks the second game in a row in which WVU's opponent has hit at least 10 three-pointers. Pittsburgh hit 11 threes last week in the Backyard Brawl.

WVU (22-9, 8-7) head coach James Frizzell was clearly concerned by that final statistic. "We seem to have a huge problem defending the three lately," he remarked. "Tonight, we seemed to be content to get bottled up in the lane and let [Rutgers] light us up from beyond the arc. To our credit, we did pretty well at defending the paint, but that was pretty much irrelevant when they were hitting jump shots over our heads all night long."

On the contrary, WVU was absolutely atrocious from three-point range. The Mountaineers shot five-for-21 from downtown and missed their first nine attempts from distance. In addition, several of their treys came once the game was already basically in the bag for the Scarlet Knights.

WVU took an early 20-15 lead against Rutgers, but a critical 13-0 Rutgers run late in the first half gave the Scarlet Knights a 33-20 lead which they never relinquished from that point on.

Major O'Bannon led Rutgers with 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Lyle Deane led the three-point assault as he went three-for-three from downtown en route to 13 points. Sophomore center Adrian Cowen tallied 12 points and four boards.

D.C. Montgomery led WVU with 18 points while Len Shields just missed out on a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.

Also of note, this marks WVU head coach James Frizzell's 150th career loss. Perhaps this is not a milestone that should be celebrated, but it is a mileston, nevertheless. With the loss, his career record drops to 471-150 as he continues to inch his way towards 500 career victories.

WVU will travel to the Verizon Center to take on Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
