I'm not quite sure how we came back. I had basically already given up in despair, then we started hitting shots and lots of them!

Yes, the refs may have been a little biased, but who's keeping track? I have to spend my virtual salary somehow, and what better way to use it than bribing the referees?

        vs.
        #16 West Virginia (10-2) vs. #9 Texas (6-1)
        Frank Erwin Center
        Austin, TX
        December 7th, 2024

No. 9 Texas and No. 16 West Virginia went toe-to-toe for most of the game Saturday evening as both teams put on a show for the entire country to see. In the end, however, the Longhorns got the best of the Mountaineers as D.C. Montgomery missed an open three at the buzzer that would have tied the game. Texas would defeat the Mountaineers 80-77 to win their sxith game of the season.

Dramane Gunn led the Longhorns with 25 points and seven rebounds. The 6'10" small forward absolutely dominated all game long, using his 253 lbs. frame to move defenders and create space for his shot. Stuart Moreno notched a double-double for Texas as he tallied 14 points and 10 boards while Dominik Avery paced the offense at guard with 14 points and seven assists.

Whereas in past games, the Mountaineers have managed to outshoot their opponents at the free throw line, the opposite was true tonight. The Longhorns managed to reach the charity stripe 34 times and made 27 of their attempts. In comparison, WVU only made it to the line eight times and made only five of their attempts. Notably, Barry George and D.C. Montgomery, two of West Virginia's most prolific guys at creating opportunities at the foul line, did not shoot a single free throw this evening.

As a side note, this was West Virginia's first road game of the season, though West Virginia had posted an 8-0 record in neutral site games thus far this season.

Len Shields performed nicely for the Mountaineers, totaling 18 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Barry George scored 10 points and tallied six assists while Tre Welch ended with 10 points and seven rebounds despite some foul trouble.

The Mountainers now have two weeks off for finals before picking up play again against Pepperdine on December 21st.

              Yes, he is.

He has a career record of 576-210 and is 65 years old, so I suspect that he'll be returning soon enough.

              He has the following ratings:

              OVR: A+
              OFF: A+
              DEF: A+

              CHA: A
              DIS: A+

His discipline ratings are a little sketchy considering what happened to him in real life!!!

Nice win over UCLA, tough loss to Texas, but I guess that is what happens when you go from shooting 30/36 FT in a win vs 5/8 in a loss to Top-25 programs.

Congrats on getting the 3 ball going against Pepperdine, hopefully that can continue.

Thanks. Yeah, the game against Texas didn't go too well, but that one was going to be tough. Texas is really good and playing on the road isn't easy in this game.

By the way, I seem to have lost the "AROUND THE NCAA" update for December 24th, 2024, so there won't be one after the Pepperdine game. Instead, we'll skip straight to the Ohio State game.

I'm actually already into the early portion of conference play and already have the updates written and saved; I just haven't posted the updates yet. Hence, I can't go back and find the top 25, etc. for the week of December 24th now.

                      December 26th, 2024

No. 15 West Virginia won its second consecutive game as the Mountaineers blew out No. 25 Ohio State on their home court 79-59. West Virginia seized an early lead, although the Buckeyes kept it close going into the second half.

West Virginia really blew it open in the second half, however, as the Mountaineers outscored Ohio State 42-29 in the final period en route to their 20-point victory.

Barry George led the Mountaineers with 19 points and three assists. Len Shields tallied a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and a pair of blocks while Tim Welch ended with 10 points and eight rebounds. Despite an atrocious day shooting the basketball, D.C. Montgomery managed 10 points, four rebounds, and four steals while Randall Norton added 10 points.

Boomer Shavies scored a team-high 16 points to go along with three assists and five steals to lead the Buckeyes. Michael Humphrey added 11 points and five boards.

West Virginia will face off against No. 11 Duquesne on next Monday in the Mountaineers' final non-conference match before conference play begins. Do note that WVU still plays Marshall on January 24th, however, so the Mountaineers' regular season non-conference schedule will not be over until then.

                          Thanks!

I'm rated about four points higher than Ohio State, so myself winning wasn't so surprising, even though it was a road game. Winning by 20 was a surprise, though, but it's a surprise that I will take!

In a grand match of top ten teams, No. 10 West Virginia overcame a one-point halftime deficit to easily slide past the visiting eight-ranked Duquesne Dukes by a final score of 85-68.

Barry George led the Mountaineers with a double-double, tallying 18 points, 11 assists, and six steals (tying a career-high). Randall Norton added 17 points, five rebounds, and three steals while D.C. Montgomery recovered nicely from his struggles last game to score 14 points and grab seven rebounds. Len Shields tallied his second consecutive double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals while Leandro Summers came off the bench to add 10 points.

In addition to a substantial advantage at the free throw line, the Mountaineers also held a huge advantage on the glass. West Virginia grabbed 45 rebounds this evening while the Dukes only managed 26 of their own.

J.W. Whitney led the Dukes with a game-high 20 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. The sharpshooting power forward also hit all four of his three-point attempts. Joshua Nashif added 17 points and three blocks while Howard Wells ended with 14 points, three assists, and four steals.

West Virginia will kick off conference play on Thursday against St. John's.
