    #12 Cleveland State (21-10) vs. #5 West Virginia (24-10)
    Ford Field
    Detroit, MI
    March 22nd, 2024

Daryan Fitzwater scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed five boards to lead the Mountaineers to a 91-78 victory over Cleveland State in the opening round of this year's NCAA Tournament.

Fitzwater hit 10 of 12 shots from the field overall, including three of four from beyond the arc, to end with 28 points, breaking his previous career-high of 16.

Osei Forney also performed marvelously, tallying a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Len Shields also notched a double-double as the sophomore forward added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The WVU offense was clicking on all cylinders as the Mountaineers collectively shot 57% from the floor. Cleveland State also shot over 50%, but a decisive 36-23 rebounding advantage in favor of the Mountaineers proved pivotal.

Jeffrey Gadson led Cleveland State with 19 points. Jaz Pekkola recorded 17 points and three boards while Willis Mejia came off the bench to add 12 points and four rebounds.

West Virginia will advance to the second round, where they will face fourth-seeded Indiana on Sunday. The Hoosiers defeated 13th-seeded Florida A&M 97-87 in the first round.

Nice solid win for West Virginia, good luck next round. First round was pretty much chalk.

            #4 Indiana (27-9) vs. #5 West Virginia (24-11)
            Ford Field
            Detroit, MI
            March 24th, 2024

Kelyn Clemmons collapsed to the floor and wept. The Mountaineers were stunned. Clemmons was a 42% three-point shooter this season, but he couldn't make it when it really counted as his three bounced off the side of the iron as time expired and the Indiana Hoosiers gained their 27th win of the season as they advance to the Sweet Sixteen after their 78-75 victory at Ford Field.

West Virginia led 32-24 at halftime as Indiana had been essentially shut down in the first half. However, the Hoosiers were not to be denied in the second half as fifth-year head coach Leslie Outlaw lit a fire in their bellies at halftime. Indiana came out firing in the second half, eventually scoring 54 points.

In the end, Indiana would post a 54% mark from the field and would drill 21 of their 31 free throw attempts.

"This one is a hard one to take," commented Coach Frizzell after the game's conclusion.

Osei Forney had a disappointing game to close out his career. The seven-footer only managed eight points and seven rebounds this evening. Randall Norton led the Mountaineers in scoring with 18 points. Daryan Fitzwater added 15 points and four rebounds while Barry George paced the offense with 14 points and five assists.

Indiana's Carlton Jeffers scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed three boards to lead the Hoosiers. Allen Archie added 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists while Ernest Spooner ended with 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Indiana will play Ohio State in the Sweet Sixteen at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA. Ohio State, the tournament's overall #1 seed, defeated #9 Richmond 83-72 in the second round.

For the Mountaineers, their season is overall as they finish with a mark of 24-11 and a second round exit in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Man that's a tough loss. It really stinks to see Forney go after such a great career. Hopefully you got a recruiting class that is similar to last year's.

Yeah, it was disappointing. Not only was he not at the top of his game, but I really didn't get him the ball enough, either, which was unfortunate.

Forney is projected as "undrafted". Fitzwater, on the other hand, does have pro buzz.

Fitzwater actually has really good ratings, but I just found it hard to use him throughout his career. His shot is kind of hard to play with and he always seems stiff when he moves, if that makes sense.

Forney doesn't have the most spectacular ratings, but he is very tall, very big, and can shoot well close to the basket (and he an even shoot mid-range Js and threes okay).

That's not a good way to go out, especially when you look back thinking of what you could have done differently. Some times teams just heat up in the second half though.

Still though, congrats on having what I would call a successful season after you weren't sure whether this would be a down year or not.

And two observations: #1 poor explorers. #2 Man does G.Tech look like they're going to repeat or what?

Yeah, it was surprising to see La Salle get kicked around by their A-10 conference rivals. As for #2, well, I already know the answer!

I'd say it was a pretty successful season. It wasn't a huge success, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been, either. We'll take it and move on. We should be as good, maybe even a little better next year, though we'll lose Osei Forney, which will hurt!
