Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Eh, I don't know this year. Pitt and Marquette are both VERY good, but then there's quite a drop off. Villanova is rated good, but they seem to be struggling now. UConn is rated 89 OVR, but they can't get their act together. I'm also an 89 OVR. After that is Cincinnati, who is in the mid-80s OVR, then everyone else is in the low 80s, if I remember right.Comment

#23 West Virginia (14-6) vs. Cincinnati (12-6)
Fifth Third Arena
Cincinnati, OH
January 27th, 2024
Led by Len Shields, the West Virginia Mountaineers came into Cincinnati and slapped around the hosting Bearcats 86-73. West Virginia came into this one having lost two straight, but this win gets WVU back on the right track and evens their record to 3-3 in conference play.
Len Shields lead the Mountaineers with 23 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Osei Forney added 14 points, three assists, and a pair of blocks while Barry George neared a double-double with 14 points and eight assists.
The Mountaineers had a very efficient day offensively, shooting 57% from the floor and 18-for-21 from the free throw line. The Mountaineers also shot 46% from beyond the arc, led by Kelyn Clemmons' two three-pointers.
The Bearcats' shooting wasn't too shabby, either, as they managed to shoot 52% from the field and out-rebounded the Mountaineers 28-23.
Ernesto Colter scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Bearcats.
West Virginia will host #14 Villanova next on February 1st.

Morgantown, WV
February 1st, 2024
The Villanova Wildcats got back on track this evening, defeating 20th-ranked West Virginia 74-72 to avert their four-game losing streak they had going over the last couple weeks.
Villanova led throughout the game. It was truly a game of two halves, but Villanova played well enough to win in both of them. The first half was a defensive slugfest where neither team could seemingly make a shot while the second half was fast-paced and high scoring with baskets-a-plenty.
West Virginia managed a furious comeback in the closing minute of play to cut an eight-point lead to two, but that was as close as they got.
Lanny Lidziues led Villanova with 25 points and seven rebounds off eight-for-10 shooting. Cordell Cuffe added 12 points and three assists while Darcel McGuire added 13 points from off the bench.
Barry George led the Mountaineers with 19 points and six assists. Osei Forney totaled 15 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists while Randall Norton drilled three shots from downtown en route to 14 points.
West Virginia will host Connecticut on Saturday.

Connecticut (12-9) vs. #20 West Virginia (15-7)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
February 3rd, 2024
#20 West Virginia bounced back from a loss on Thursday against Villanova as the Mountaineers outlasted the Connecticut Huskies 77-70 to win this afternoon in Morgantown.
West Virginia won behind a strong effort from the free throw line, where WVU shot 27 for 33 (82%) collectively. 10 of those free throws came in the final minute of the game in which the Huskies began to foul as WVU went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe during that stretch.
"We cashed in on our opportunities from the free throw line and that is a huge factor that goes into winning ball games," responded Coach Frizzell, when asked about his team's success at the free throw line this evening. "Free throw attempts are free points and the last thing you want to do is throw them away. In our case, it probably won us the game tonight."
Barry George led the Mountaineers with 20 points, five assists, and six steals. Randall Norton added 15 points while Daryan Fitzwater cashed in with 10 points. Len Shields tallied 11 points and nine rebounds while Osei Forney had a very solid game, totaling 10 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.
UConn's biggest contributor came from the bench. Sophomore guard Chauncey Gogerty came in to relieve Sylvester Halcomb, who was mired in foul trouble all game long and eventually fouled out. Gogerty scored 21 points off eight baskets, just two points shy of his career-high of 23. Pervis Simon was the only other UConn player to score more than eight points as he added 15 points.
West Virginia will face DePaul and Louisville next week.

#22 West Virginia (16-7) vs. DePaul (11-10)
Allstate Arena
Rosemont, Illinois
February 7th, 2024
No. 22 West Virginia survived a scare from DePaul this evening on the road. West Virginia dominated the first half and went to the locker room with a 42-25 lead over the Blue Demons, but DePaul fought back hard in the second half, eventually tying the game at 79 apiece with 5.4 seconds left.
That is when Barry George's heroics kicked in. The 6'0" junior guard took the ball and ran the length of the floor, crossed over his defender, and made a bee line towards the basket. His efforts were paid off as he was pummeled by Depaul's Emmett Flores with 0.9 seconds remaining, earning himself two trips the the free throw line, both of which he hit. DePaul took the ball out from under the basket and managed to get off a shot from beyond half court that bounced off the backboard as the Mountaineers escaped 81-79, improving their conference record to 5-4.
Barry George hit seven of his eight free throw attempts this evening, culminating in 18 points and five assists. Osei Forney led the Mountaineers in scoring with 19 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Meanwhile, Randall Norton nailed five three-pointers as he ended with 15 points and three assists.
Senior guard Lowell Hubbard led DePaul with 21 points and three rebounds. Fellow senior Luol Queen added 19 points and four assists.
West Virginia will host Louisville on Saturday.
