#14 West Virginia (15-6) vs. Seton Hall (12-6)
    Prudential Center
    Newark, NJ
    January 23rd, 2025

No. 14 West Virginia (15-6, 2-4) suffered its second loss in a row, and its fourth loss in five games, as the Mountaineers dropped a game on the road against the Seton Hall Pirates (12-6, 3-3).

For the Mountaineers, it was another game of inept defensive play and a second half collapse. The Mountaineers led Seton Hall 42-40 at halftime and actually led for much of the second half, but lost the lead late. The Mountaineers had a chance to tie it with under 30 seconds left, but Leandro Summers' layup attempt was rejected by Stafen Nelke and Seton Hall went on to hit its free throws to win 90-85.

Seton Hall shot the basketball exceptionally well, connecting on 52% of their shots from the field, including a 10-for-19 mark from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers shot even better, at 53%, and connected on nine of their 16 attempts from three-point land.

Haim Smallwood led the way for the Pirates, connecting on seven of 10 field goal attempts en route to 25 points, five assists, and three steals. Kim Dahi also added 17 points while Courtnei Jurczak scored 13.

Len Shields led the Mountaineers in scoring and rebounding with 16 points and 12 boards. Barry George added 15 points and five assists while D.C. Montgomery chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Leandro Summers also added 14 points from off the bench as he got extended minutes due to his excellent play.

West Virginia will return to Morgantown tonight as they have a quick turnaround with a game against Marshall at home tomorrow. The cross-state rivals are always a tough out for WVU and enter the game with a very respectable 10-5 record. If the Mountaineers are not careful, they could easily lose.

              January 24th, 2025

The West Virginia Mountaineers (16-6) bounced back from two straight losses to blow out their cross-state rivals, the Marshall Thundering Herd (10-6), this evening 82-63.

The Mountaineers looked much better than in their last four or five ball games as they played well enough offensively and locked down on the defensive end, especially over the first 35 minutes of the game.

"We really tried to slow the pace down for tonight's game," Coach Frizzell explained, "and it seemed to produce improved results. I think we got better shots, which obviously helped us offensively, and we played much better on the defensive side of the ball."

The Mountaineers held Marshall to only 45 points until around the 35-minute mark. WVU led by as many as 26 points before putting in the backups, which surrendered quite a few points defensively in the final five minutes of the game.

Tre Welch led the Mountaineers in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Herd seemed to have problems with the Mountaineers' big men as Len Shields also played well offensively and on the glass, scoring 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Randall Norton also added 12 points and four boards while Kelyn Clemmons came off the bench to score 11 points.

The Herd were led by junior point guard Timmy Towe. Towe scored 10 of his 16 points in the final five minutes of the game as he hit three treys in that stretch to cut the WVU lead to only 19 points at the end of regulation. Randolph Cox was also a factor in that aforementioned comeback as he hit three three-pointers and scored 15 points.

The Mountaineers will host Syracuse on Sunday afternoon.

Way to bounce back from those losses. Now if only West Virginia could do this to the pesky Big East.

We need to build some momentum. Conference play has not been welcome to us yet this year. Marshall is a decent team this year, though, so to essentially blow them out is certainly a big step in the right direction for this team.

No. 14 West Virginia (17-6, 3-4) easily cruised by the visiting Syracuse Orange (7-14, 1-7) this evening 84-60 to win their second game in a row and get back on the right track before next week's big game at Louisville.

The Mountaineers led 44-22 at halftime and never really looked vulnerable this afternoon. The backups received extended playing time in the second half.

Len Shields led the Mountaineers with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Tre Welch tallied 10 points and 10 boards. D.C. Montgomery added 14 points while Barry George paced the offense with 11 points and four assists. Kelyn Clemmons also came off the bench to contribute 12 points.

Syracuse was led by Souleymane Miller, who scored a game-high 21 points. Linas O'Neil and Ben Morkeliunas also added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Interestingly, the WVU bench outscored Syracuse's bench 33-2 this afternoon as WVU appeared to be by far the deeper team. It also didn't hurt that the WVU bench players played most of the second half, of course.

The Mountaineers will travel to Louisville, KY to take on the Cardinals next Wednesday evening.

No. 17 West Virginia (18-6, 4-4) won its third consecutive game this evening as the Mountaineers defeated a hot Louisville Cardinals squad 75-64.

Louisville (15-6, 6-3) led 35-32 at halftime, but the Mountaineers buckled down on defense and picked it up on the offensive side in the second half. For WVU, it was one of their classic early season second half outbursts as they outscored the Cardinals 43-29 in the second half and led by as many as 17 at one point.

"We played our game," explained Coach Frizzell. "We knew we were in a hostile environment, but we just slowed the game down and put things together on offense. Meanwhile, our defense played well and that's pretty much the recipe for winning basketball games."

Both teams were successful at shooting the basketball, but WVU held a marked advantage at the free throw stripe and also held a 32-20 advantage on the glass. WVU's 21-9 assists-to-turnover ratio was also an encouraging statistic for the Mountaineers.

Randall Norton led both teams in scoring as he totaled 16 points. Len Shields played a nice game down low, tallying 15 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks, while D.J. Montgomery chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

Mychal Silva led the Cardinals in scoring with 15 points while senior forward Brendon Cesar added 14.

Next, the Mountaineers will hit the road to take on the struggling Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, February 1st.

Just 20 rebounds for Louisville? Way to box out.

Now that its been four years since your Championship are you probably content with finishing this career at WVU? and if you do make it to the end will you start over? i know thats probably a good 5 or 6 years away but where do you think you would start over at?

Thanks. We had a good performance there and UL is pretty good, despite not being ranked.

I am content at WVU for now. I don't want to say I'll be content forever at WVU, but I have no plans for leaving.

I flirted with the idea of leaving and going to UNCG to rebuild there when that job opened up a couple seasons ago, but in the end I decided not to.

Despite winning a title at WVU, I still really haven't had a dominant team and haven't put together a season to remember, so to speak. I'd love to have a season where I just lay down the law all season long, but we haven't had enough talent for that yet. I don't put a ton into recruiting, to be honest, so we may never have enough talent for that, though I must say that this year's class is looking pretty darn good!

NC State could also pull me away at some point, I suppose, but that probably wouldn't be until I reach some more of my goals at WVU. The ACC has been pretty good in this legacy and the Big East has been kind of disappointing the last few years, I must say. Sidney Lowe retired a few season ago, though, so unless NCSU falters and gets their coach fired, that job probably won't be open for quite some time. Unlike real-life Sidney Lowe, the virtual Sidney Lowe was actually a pretty good coach!

I have no plans to start over my legacy and as to who I would start with once I do reach the 40-year mark? I really don't know. It would be another closed legacy, for sure, so maybe Morehead State? I don't really know. I may not be playing this game in 5-6 years, so we may never find out.

I am willing to bet a good amount of money (like a whole 10 bucks :wink that we all will still be playing this in 2017-2018
