        NCAA Tournament - First Round

The top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers had no problems dispatching 16th-seeded Southern Utah this evening as the Mountaineers outlasted the Thunderbirds 76-57.

Neill Roberts was the star of the game as he drained four of his five three-point attempts for the Thunderbirds (16-15) and tallied 20 points and three rebounds as he did all he could to keep Southern Utah in the game. While the Mountaineers (31-3) secured the victory in relatively easy fashion, they also couldn't afford to empty their bench, either, as the Thunderbirds kept pace with the Mountaineers and never let the game get completely out of hand.

"They have a solid squad," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "We didn't play badly, but they played well. Now, we will look ahead to our next game in a couple days."

Small forward Armondo Whelchel came off the bench for West Virginia to score a career-high 20 points on eight-for-10 shooting in what was seen by many as a breakout performance on the big stage for the promising freshman as he took his man to the hole over and over and even showed off some post moves. He also tallied three rebounds and four assists in his 22 minutes of time on the floor. In addition, Nile Stevenson totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocks while fellow big man O.J. Peterson matched him in points with 12 points, five boards, and three blocks. Fred Joiner also had a nice outing as he contributed 10 points, eight rebounds (a career-high), and three steals.

Ninth-seeded UAB defeated eight-seeded UNLV 80-65, so the Mountaineers will face off against the Blazers on Sunday in the second round of this year's NCAA Tournament.

            NCAA Tournament - Second Round

West Virginia (32-3) is in the Sweet Sixteen for the fifth consecutive year. The top-seeded Mountaineers pummeled UAB (26-11) this evening 75-53 to advance to the round of 16, where they will take on fourth-seeded Kentucky in the South Regional semifinals.

Tonight, the Mountaineers established their dominance right off the bat as they scored the first basket on their first possession and never let UAB pull even with them again. The Mountaineers' defensive effort in the first half was impressive as they smothered the Blazers, holding them to just 15 first-half points. The Blazers recovered some in the second half, pulling to within nine points at one point in the second half with the score 50-41, but the Mountaineers responded with a run of their own as they outscored UAB 25-12 for the remainder of the game.

The Mountaineers got a strong performance out of their low post players as both center O.J. Palmer and power forward Nile Stevenson tallied double-doubles. Palmer totaled an impressive 14 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists while Stevenson contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds. Deno Woodards also added 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals while Waitari Trammell paced the offense from the point guard position with 10 points, five assists, and four steals.

West Virginia was strong on the glass all day as they racked up a considerable amount of offensive rebounds and outrebounded the UAB Blazers 38-21.

Martell Keller led UAB in scoring with 12 points and three rebounds. Arturo Slaughter had a rough night shooting the ball, but still managed to record 10 points and three assists.

Fourth-seeded Kentucky defeated fifth-seeded San Diego in the other game earlier at Ford Field. The Mountaineers will face Kentucky next Friday at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN, the site of the South Regional.

Good luck against the Cats, Crazy how only in your regional did the Top-4 seeds advance to the Sweet 16.

Will be interesting to see if Duquesne can make it past UCLA and probably Texas in order to reach that Final 4.

24-8 in the first round, 10-6 in the Round of 32 with my picks. Not bad, not great. Lost UConn from my Final Four (would have made a great matchup with West Virginia storyline wise), and 4 of my Elite 8 (Marquette, Stanford, Iona, UConn) so it's probably going downhill lol.

Nice pair of wins to open the tournament, ratings-wise is there anyone in the tournament that's close to your team?

Wow look at UConn crash and burn in the second round!!! The road is a little bit nicer with a couple of those second round upsets!

Good luck against the Cats, Crazy how only in your regional did the Top-4 seeds advance to the Sweet 16.

Will be interesting to see if Duquesne can make it past UCLA and probably Texas in order to reach that Final 4.
Yeah, lots of upsets across the board. My bracket didn't see them, but the teams in my bracket are lower-rated for the most part, anyways (only Texas A&M is rated within a 3 OVR points of my team).

Nice pair of wins to open the tournament, ratings-wise is there anyone in the tournament that's close to your team?
Texas A&M is rated a point or two lower. There's a couple teams out there that are also rated 94 OVR, and Georgia Tech is surprisingly rated 96 OVR (though they've underperformed). I had the best team in the Big East, but there's definitely some buzzsaws in this tournament. Kentucky is an 88 OVR, so they're 6 OVR points below my team, FWIW.

Indeed. I wasn't unhappy to see them or Marquette lose. That being said, the Big East now only has one team (my own team) in the Sweet Sixteen, which is pretty embarrassing.

R.J. Peterson hadn't played a minute all game, but the senior shooting guard from West Virginia got a chance to extend his career. Peterson was heralded as a three-point marksman with a quick shot coming out of high school. The latter has proved true. The former has been shaky, at best. Peterson has seen his role diminish during his latter tenure at WVU with Predrag Gabler taking over the backup shooting guard position this season. Nevertheless, Peterson had a chance to reclaim his mantra as he was called on for WVU's final shot of the season. With 10 seconds remaining down three with the ball after Kentucky point guard Jordi Geli Ortiz went one-for-two from the free throw line, the Mountaineers took the ball upcourt. West Virginia Point guard Waitari Trammell, also a senior, who had just hit a crucial corner three-pointer - his first of the game - on the prior possession, drove the ball past a pick and found R.J. Peterson on the wing for a three. Unfortunately, Peterson wasn't as open as it was hoped he would be as Kentucky's bigs had moved out towards the three-point arc to contest the final shot of the game. Peterson's reputation for being a quick shooter proved true as he was able to get off the shot over the trees, but he could not recover his reputation as a lethal marksman as his shot clanged off the front of the rim and the fourth-seeded Kentucky Wildcats defeated the top-seeded Mountaineers out of the South Regional 65-62.

"Obviously, we're really disappointed," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell, "and I really hate that for R.J. It's a shame to see a great kid who has put in all the work and tried his best go out like that. He's been a great sport about his diminished role this season and his spirit and character in the locker room and on the bench have been instrumental to our success this season on out on the court."

Kentucky (28-9) led for the majority of the game. Indeed, the Mountaineers did not take their first lead of the game until going on an 11-0 run to take a 41-38 lead after being down 38-30 early in the second half. The Wildcats gave up 10 offensive rebounds to the Mountaineers and were outrebounded overall 30-26. In addition, Kentucky turned the basketball over 18 times, though West Virginia (32-4) was little better with 15 turnovers of their own. However, the Mountaineers were terrible from beyond the arc (2/15) and only got to the free throw line eight times. In comparison, Kentucky made 16/18 from the free throw stripe.

"Free throws are the key to any ball game," explained WVU's Frizzell. "We played well on defense, but we did not execute on offensive. We were not aggressive enough and did not force the issue to get to the line even though we clearly did not have a knack for making jump shots tonight. We really started to pound the ball into Nile [Stevenson] in the second half, but in the end one guy can't really win you a game and we really needed someone else to step up and deliver for us. It didn't happen."

Stevenson was WVU's leading scorer as he scored a game-high 22 points and also grabbed six rebounds. He was the only Mountaineer to score more than eight points.

Sophomore small forward Tyler Nixon led Kentucky with 14 points. Derek Lhota added 13 points and seven rebounds while Kentrell Felton totaled 12 points and five rebounds.

West Virginia finishes the season at 32-4 and with a Sweet Sixteen appearance. It will be the first time the Mountaineers have failed to reach the Final Four since 2025 and the first time the Mountaineers have failed to reach the Elite Eight since 2024.

"Four consecutive Final Fours is an impressive feat," commented WVU senior point guard Waitari Trammell. "It's a shame we couldn't do it again. I had a bad game tonight and I really wish I could have taken some things back. It hurts to lose a close game like this."

Trammell is projected to be a lottery pick in the NBA Draft this summer.

Meanwhile, Kentucky will advance to play #2-seeded Texas A&M on Sunday for the rights to go to the Final Four as the champions of the South Region.
