    NCAA Tournament - Championship Game
    April 3rd, 2028

The Mountaineers (36-2) have done it! For the second time during head coach James Frizzell's tenure and also for the second time in school history, the West Virginia University Mountaineers have won the NCAA Basketball National Championship! Tonight, the Mountaineers cruised to an easy victory over Duke (31-6) as they clobbered the Blue Devils 88-61.

The Mountaineers got off to a hot start, leading 18-2 right off the bat. Deno Woodards hit his first five three-pointers and scored 15 of the Mountaineers' first 23 points. He ended with 20 points and five rebounds.

Tre Welch tallied 18 points and eight boards for the Mountaineers while Nile Stevenson added 10 points and three boards. Waitari Trammell contributed 10 points, seven assists, and four steals while O.J. Palmer came off the bench in relief to add 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals.

West Virginia led 57-24 at halftime, which allowed Coach Frizzell to empty the bench for a significant portion of the second half with the game well in hand.

"This is a great feeling to win another one of these," beamed Coach Frizzell. "Last time I won one of these back in 2021, we were a bit of a miracle team. This year, there's no doubt that we have the best team in the country and I'm glad we proved it on the court tonight. This run we've been on in the NCAA Tournament has just been something to behold. It's a shame that we couldn't capture the Big East Tournament Title, but I really think that loss to Marquette gave us that extra kick we needed to really be on top of our game for these last few weeks. It's been a great run and I am already looking forward to next year!"

Jordan Spencer led Duke in scoring with 19 points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals while Lubor Rand added 17 points.

It was another blowout victory in an entire tournament of them for West Virginia. The Mountaineers' closest game of the NCAA Tournament was their 22-point victory over Gardner-Webb in the opening round. Since then, they've won by 38, 52, 35, 47, and 27 points for an average margin of victory over the six tournament games of 36.8 points per game.

"We came out with a fire in our bellies [after losing in the Big East Tournament]," explained Coach Frizzell, "and weren't going to let anything get in our way of our ultimate goal."

The West Virginia Mountaineers finish the season at 36-2 and as your 2028 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions.

Congratulations on winning the National Championship. Some key contributors leaving the team, here's to another run. It's cool to see a dynasty like yours because not only is it entertaining, it's realistic (at least to me lol). 2 championships in 21 seasons, no teams that have absolutely dominated aside from this past one. Here's to another great season.

We are losing some players, but the 2028 recruiting class is shaping up very nicely, so we should be able to make another run at it next season.

Yes, it has taken quite awhile to get this WVU team to be legitimate national championship contenders (which we have been the last three seasons, really). It will be interesting if I can manage the back-to-back next season. The issue is that it's hard to win six tournament games in a row against good teams, so even if you have a great team, it only takes one slip-up.

              2028 Recruiting Class

With four scholarships available for the 2028 recruiting class, WVU head coach James Frizzell made good use of them. Frizzell spread the available scholarships evenly across the forward and guard positions to fill several needs. In addition, he continued a long tradition of recruiting dominant players at the forward position, with two All-American forwards joining the roster next season.

Armondo Whelchel headlines the class. He hails from Brooklyn, NY and is ranked as the #8 overall recruit of the 2028 class. He is also ranked as the fifth-best small forward. He is tall for a small forward at 6'8" and is very athletic for his size, with the ability to slash towards the basket. He has also shown to be a capable shooter and is a very good defender. He will likely see playing time at backup small forward behind Deno Woodards immediately. With his size, he could also fill in at power forward at times.

Ethan Augustin is Frizzell's other five-star All-American recruit. Augustin hails from Rancho Cucamonga, CA and is the #22 overall player from the 2028 class. He is also the fourth-ranked power forward. Augustin doesn't have the size of some of Frizzell's recent recruits at power forward or center, but he has shown to be a very good player. He is a skillful passer, which is key in Frizzell's offense at the power forward position, and has also shown to be a capable shooter for his position. Augustin's position next year is uncertain. He might see playing time, but the Mountaineers are already loaded in the low post, so it will depend on how well he plays in preseason practice. He may be redshirted to allow for another year of growth. Time will tell.

Predgrag Gabler hails from El Paso, TX, and is the 39th-overall recruit of the class. He is rated as a four-start recruit and is the 16th-ranked shooting guard. He has great size for a guard at 6'6". WVU was not very deep at the guard positions this past season, so it is likely he will see playing time immediately, though he may have to compete with fellow freshman Matt Blanchard. He has shown some quicknesses and is also an excellent shooter. With his size, he can easily fill in at small forward if needed.

Matt Blanchard closes out the 2028 recruiting class for West Virginia. He is the 85th-ranked recruit out of the class and the 29th-ranked shooting guard. He is not nearly as tall as Gabler at 6'3", but he fits very well within the system Frizzell runs at WVU. He is an excellent shooter and could see playing time immediately. He could also see playing time at point guard if the need arises.

WVU's outstanding class is ranked #1 in the country. For the first time in his career, Frizzell has amassed the top class. The remainder of the top five are Boston College, Florida State, Duke, and Duquesne.

              Signed Recruits:

Congrats on the National Championship and the number one recruiting class in the nation! You just keep checking off milestones left and right with the best class in the country. Will Coach Frizzell go down as one of the best ever when all is said and done???

Early indications are that I have a good shot at getting the #1 recruit in the country this year, as well (finally!). The 800 and 900-win goals will just take time, and I would assume the Lifetime Contract will happen at some point. That will leave two remaining goals: the two national player awards. Those are going to be tough to come by unless I either get some once-in-a-lifetime talent or I start changing my playing style to focus more on one guy.

Anyways, I should easily reach the 600-win milestone this year, which will be nice.

His three-point rating is pretty average, but I've found that I seem to have more success shooting threes with him than his 3PT rating would indicate, especially from the corner. His shooting motion is kind of long, so he does need to be fairly open, though. He also has shown to be an adept slasher.

R.J. Peterson is the opposite. He's the best 3PT shooter I've ever had ratings-wise (his 3PT rating is 95!), but I just can't make it work with him. I do love that he gets his shot gets off really quickly, but I've had a lot of trouble shooting the three-pointer well with him.

LOL, thank you. It's been a long journey; that's for sure. It's kind of crazy to think of some of the great players I had at Princeton so long ago in both game-years and real-years. It's literally been 6 1/2 years since I played a game with Wendell Lalugba or Cassiand Swift... And even marginally great early players like Martin Sow, etc.

Lalugba was really the first "great" player I ever had and Swift was the first great bigman I had, which has become my forte ever since.

In terms of relevancy and importance Taylor Swift comes a close second to Cassiand Swift....just to clarify for those not in the know!
