No. 2 West Virginia (14-0, 2-0) nearly met their match in an early conference season road matchup aginst No. 6 Marquette (11-3, 1-1) this Saturday evening, but the Mountaineers held on to edge the Golden Eagles 69-65.

Marquette made WVU sweat late in the game, but the Mountaineers sunk the free throws they needed to and advanced with a four-point win to move to 14-0 on the season.

Nile Stevenson was huge for the Mountaineers as he scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven boards. Fellow big man O.J. Palmer was also magnificient as he scored 16 points and hauled down 13 rebounds, in addition to blocking three shots.

Wade O'Neil carried Marquette with 20 points and three rebounds while junior forward Dez Keita added 18 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Senior center Cedric Nichols also notched a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.

        vs.
        Providence (8-7) vs. #2 West Virginia (15-0)
        WVU Coliseum
        Morgantown, WV
        January 3rd, 2029

No. 2 West Virginia (15-0, 3-0) kept its undefeated season alive by the skin of their teeth this evening in Morgantown as the Providence Friars (8-7, 0-3), desperate for a defining win, gave the Mountaineers all they could handle. The Friars kept the game close through its entirety and had a real shot at winning late in the game. They converted a three-pointer down four points in the closing seconds to cut the lead to one point, but WVU got off the ensuing inbounds pass cleanly to Deno Woodards, who hit one of two from the line with a second remaining in regulation. The Friars had a chance to win it with the final heave after Woodards' second free throw clanged off the iron, but the full-court heave wasn't close to the mark and the Mountaineers escaped 79-77.

Nile Stevenson was WVU's top performer as he tallied 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Fred Joiner totaled 13 points, three assists, and four steals while Predrag Gabler came off the bench add 13 points. Deno Woodards scored 12 points and grabbed three boards while Waitari Trammell had another nice performance, pacing the offense with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Providence's senior twin towers of 7'1" Herbert Sutton and 7'0" Harding Zoric gave WVU all they could handle. Sutton led Providence with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks while Zoric came one rebound short of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards. Fellow senior Luke Martin added 12 points while junior point guard Tommy McKee tallied 10 points and six assists.

West Virginia will host Seton Hall on Saturday.

Marquette always plays you hard. The Providence game really surprised me though, those new sliders are really making you work harder for those wins

Yeah, Marquette always seems to be my nemesis. They usually matchup with me pretty well and they have consistently fielded one of the Big East's top 2-3 teams since I took the WVU job nearly a decade ago. I think Buzz Williams has racked up a ton of wins over his career coaching there in this legacy. He may make a run at 1,000 wins.

Providence was kind of a bad matchup (or not a "good" one for me). Their bigs were slightly taller than my twin towers, which negated my usual advantage there, and I got outrebounded. The D just wasn't very hot, in general, though.

                WVU Coliseum
                Morgantown, WV
                January 6th, 2029

West Virginia (16-0, 4-0) easily topped Seton Hall (8-6, 0-3) this afternoon 90-60 behind a strong offensive performance. The Pirates kept the game close early, but the second-ranked Mountaineers went on a 10-0 run to take a 27-16 lead midway through the first half and never looked back.

Nile Stevenson led WVU with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. Waitari Trammell also had another fine game, totaling 20 points, four assists, and five steals. He also hit five three-pointers on just eight attempts. O.J. Palmer added 16 points and 12 rebounds while freshman small forward Armondo Whelchel got to the free throw stripe early and often as he came off the bench to add 14 points and four boards.

Aaron Wood and Jackie Blackgrove led the Pirates with 11 points apiece.

West Virginia will face a hot DePaul squad on Tuesday. The Blue Demons are 11-3 overall and 3-0 in Big East Conference play. They haven't made an NCAA Tournament since 2010, but they may have a real shot at doing so this year. They would get a huge boost with a win over the Mountaineers, who will likely be ranked No. 1 next week with Georgia Tech's loss to Virginia earlier this week.

Just finished year one of my closed legacy with Winston-Salem State. Finished 9-18 and as a team shot 29% from the field all year. Your sliders are tough but I like them, makes the games play out like they should.

Ouch, that's rough! The one-click down on the shooting sliders this year definitely made the shooting more challenging, especially from beyond the arc. I've had a lot more difficulty making three-pointers this season, as you may have noticed (with some players more than others).

It was rough. The highest rated guy on my team was a only a 61 overall, so that didn't help either. Looking forward to year two though.

I did notice that your 3 point percentage has dropped a bit, but you've also not shot as much from behind the arc. Which I think translates better to how your team would actually play IRL with your twin towers you have down low.

I tend to be a bit three-point happy in general and last year I shot it so well from beyond the arc that it was nearly impossible not to take a ton of shots from deep per game, but as you said this year I haven't been shooting it from distance as often with a more reasonable percentage made (upper 30% is my team total so far this year, IIRC) and Nile Stevenson and surprisingly O.J. Palmer have been so good that there really hasn't been a need to take a lot of three-pointers.

It's interesting because Trammell is actually shooting it better from three-point range this year, though. Gabler has also shown himself to be a decent marksman as a freshman and Stevenson is good from beyond the arc when he gets some opportunities (he has to be quite open as his shooting motion is slow, however).

DePaul (11-4, 3-1) is going to look back at this one as one they let get away. The Blue Demons led the top-ranked Mountaineers (17-0, 5-0) 76-71 with under three minutes remaining and looked to have all the momentum with the crowd rocking on their side after Jermaine Frederick nailed a three to give DePaul the five-point lead. However, as all championship-level teams do, the Mountaineers responded. Nile Stevenson hit a big three from the corner to tie it, then Armondo Whelchel drove the ball to the can on the next possession and converted the free throw on an and-one to give WVU a 77-76 lead. WVU held on from there and sank free throws down the stretch to sink the Blue Demons 88-83 and avoid the upset.

"These games are tough, but great teams always find a way to win them and we lived up to the billing today, "beamed WVU head coach James Frizzell. "DePaul has a really nice squad this year."

Nile Stevenson had a game-high 20 points and four rebounds to lead the Mountaineers. Armondo Whelchel added 12 points while O.J. Palmer tallied 12 points and eight boards. Fred Joiner also added 10 points.

Jermaine Frederick scored 17 points to lead the Blue Demons in scoring. Dameon McGrath added 11 points while Simon Scalzo ended with 10.

WVU will host a hot Notre Dame team this coming Saturday.

Top-ranked West Virginia (18-0, 6-0) delivered a statement this afternoon in Morgantown as they turned a slim four-point halftime advantage into a 30-point shellacking against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-6, 3-2) as the Mountaineers romped the visitors from South Bend 104-74.

The game was close until early in the second half when the Mountaineers started raining three-pointers. By the end of the half, the Mountaineers had outcored the Irish 60-34 and had accumulated 14 made three-pointers over the course of the game. This was combined with a dominant effort on the glass, where WVU outrebounded Notre Dame 43-20.

Predgag Gabler came off the bench early in the second half to jumpstart the WVU run that put the game out of reach. The freshman guard had missed his first four shots of the game, but hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions to give the Mountaineers their first double-digit lead of the game at the 15-minute mark in the second half. From there on out, the Mountaineers rolled.

Notre Dame actually led for a decent portion of the first half. The Irish held a 33-21 lead at one point before Deno Woodards connected on a pair of threes to thrust the Mountaineers onto a 13-0 run to take their first lead of the game late in the first period.

Fred Joiner led the Mountaineers with 17 points and four assists. O.J. Palmer had a great outing with 17 points and nine rebounds while fellow big man Nile Stevenson tallied 13 points and eight boards. Deno Woodards totaled 14 points and four rebounds while Predrag Gabler came off the bench to add 11 points.

Sheray Clarke scored a game-high 20 points and tallied four steals to lead the Fighting Irish. Wilbur See just missed out on a double-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Noah Rios added 15 points, three rebounds, and five assists while point guard J.S. Bland notched an impressive double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.

This win improves WVU head coach James Frizzell's record to 599-166. He will look to win his 600th career game on January 17th when the Mountaineers host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
