NCAA Tournament - Second Round
No. 2-seeded West Virginia (29-5) advanced to the Sweet Sixteen with an 84-63 victory over No. 7-seeded Boston College (24-13) this evening in Spokane, WA.
The Mountaineers got off to a hot start and dominated the first half. They led Boston College 42-21 at halftime and cruised in the second half to a 21-point victory.
Stefon Hull was lights-out, hitting eight three-pointers and scoring a career-high 28 points to lead the Mountaineers in scoring. Carson Lavender just missed out on a double-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, and three steals and Felipe Delgado added 10 points and a career-best six assists. Barry Henning also came off the bench to hit three treys and total 13 points and four rebounds.
Keith Underwood led Boston College in scoring with 15 points and eight rebounds. Roosevelt Gansey scored 14 points and Nathaniel Cassler added 12 points, seven assists, and three steals.
The Mountaineers were highly effective on offense, where they shot 51% (30/59) from the field overall, including 15/30 (50%) from beyond the three-point arc. Surprisingly, the Mountaineers were outrebounded 28-26, but it mattered little towards the final outcome.
West Virginia will face No. 3-seeded Oregon at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA in the Sweet Sixteen round next week. The Ducks defeated Tennessee 90-78 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

NCAA Tournament - Sweet Sixteen
Two-time defending national champions West Virginia (29-7) went down in a crushing defeat this evening to the Oregon Ducks (27-9). The Ducks led 34-26 at halftime and jumped all over the Mountaineers in the second half, outscoring them 52-32 en route to a dominant 86-58 victory to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
Senior guard Donny Finley scored 22 points to lead the Ducks in scoring. Everett President added 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists and Vladimir Kummer scored 13 points from off the bench.
The Ducks shot 52% (34/66) from the floor, including 50% (5/10) from three-point range, and outrebounded West Virginia 45-36. Their only blemish was 17 turnovers, but they made up with it with their on-point shooting.
West Virginia, on the other hand, had what was likely their worst shooting performance in many years. The Mountaineers shot just 28% (20/72) from the field overall, and 21% (9/42) from three-point range on a startling 42 attempts.
The Ducks employed a 2-3 zone defense that packed the paint and dared the Mountaineers to beat them from deep. It was a bold strategy considering West Virginia has had good success from deep this season, but they were off in a big way tonight. The Ducks held Belton Mombollet and Carson Lavender in check with a combined 9 points on 3/13 shooting inside, and forced the Mountaineers to beat them from three-point range. They couldn't.
Stefon Hull, who had come up huge with a career-high 28 points against Boston College, shot a shockingly bad 3/18, including 2/13 from three-point range. Senior small forward Felipe Delgado was the only Mountaineer to score in double-figures with 15 points and eight rebounds, and even he was inefficient from beyond the three-point arc, where he shot just 1/6.
"It was ugly," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "This is a tough loss to take. We weren't making bad decisions per se. They were packing the paint and preventing us from getting anything inside, and we were mostly taking open shots from three-point range. We just couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. It got really ugly in the second half as we went really cold and we lost our cool on the defensive end of the court, too."
"It's a disappointing way to go out," said West Virginia senior small forward Felipe Delgado, "but you just have to take your lumps and move on. I'm grateful for my career here at West Virginia and I'm glad we got a couple national championships during my tenure here. I wish it could've been three, but these games happen."
Tonight's loss ends a string of four consecutive Final Fours, three straight National Championship Game appearances, and two straight national championships for the Mountaineers.
"It was a good run, but all good things come to an end," said Frizzell.
The Ducks will face off against Nebraska, the No. 4 seed, in the West Regional Final in two days. The Cornhuskers blew out No. 1-seeded Syracuse 79-49 to advance. The winner will advance to the Final Four in New Orleans.

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Getting dogwalked to end a season is the worst. I go into the offseason with the mindset that I now have no returning starters. Everyone's position is a competition. Unless it was one of those "2K hates me and only me" type of games, which is rare.#WashedGamerComment

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
New seasons are kind of exciting, for sure. Just hate to go out like that, but eh it is what it is. I’m hoping the new guys I’m bringing in can give us some more low post presence next season because that is something we were sorely missing this season that I usually have.Comment
