    Fairfield (12-2) vs. #1 West Virginia (13-0)

    December 26th, 2037

Fairfield (12-2) entered tonight's matchup seeking to make a bold statement against the No. 1 team in the nation. However, their aspirations were brutally dashed as they suffered a demoralizing 92-58 loss to West Virginia (13-0).

Belton Mombollet showcased his skills with 18 points and nine rebounds for West Virginia, while Morris Filipovic matched that scoring output with a career-best 18 points. Carson Lavender flexed his muscle with a double-double, registering 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks, and Stefon Hull chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.

The Mountaineers' defense was a force to be reckoned with, racking up 10 blocks as a team, including five by Tremmell Amerson and three from Carson Lavender. Both Belton Mombollet and Joshua Wilkerson contributed a block each to the tally.

Fairfield struggled to find their rhythm, shooting a meager 31% (16/52) from the floor. They did find some solace at the free-throw line, going 22/26, which kept the game from devolving into a total rout. However, the outcome was never in question, as West Virginia established a commanding lead early on and more than doubled Fairfield's score by halftime, 47-21.

Senior Artem Fischer led Fairfield with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Cal Alleyne added 13 points, and Dale Schneiderman contributed 10 points to the effort.

West Virginia is set to begin conference play at home against Rutgers next Tuesday, but they'll first face one more non-conference challenge on January 2nd against No. 13 Ole Miss.

        Rutgers (7-6) vs. #1 West Virginia (14-0)
        WVU Coliseum
        Morgantown, WV
        December 29th, 2037

Stefon Hull's 20 points and Carson Lavender's 10 points and six rebounds propelled top-ranked West Virginia (14-0, 1-0) to a narrower-than-anticipated 60-50 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-6, 0-1) tonight. This hard-fought matchup marked the Big East Conference opener for both teams.

The Mountaineers started strong, establishing an 18-point lead, 33-15, by halftime. However, a resilient Rutgers team clawed their way back in the second half, preventing the game from spiraling out of control.

Junior guard Konrad Rice emerged as the top scorer for the Scarlet Knights with 14 points, and Will Mackinson contributed 10 points to the effort.

West Virginia's defense proved effective, holding Rutgers to 39% shooting and a meager 4/16 performance from beyond the arc.

The contest featured a slower pace, with both teams displaying careful ball control. Rutgers committed seven turnovers, while West Virginia only had six.

The Mountaineers will now temporarily shift their focus away from conference play as they prepare to face No. 13 Mississippi on Saturday to usher in the new year.

No. 1 West Virginia (15-0) delivered a powerful second-half performance, racking up a season-high 97 points and securing a decisive 97-70 victory over No. 13 Mississippi (13-3) on Saturday afternoon.

Mississippi kept pace in the first half, trailing by a mere four points at halftime. However, the Mountaineers found another gear in the second half, outscoring the Rebels 55-32 and pulling away for the win.

Stefon Hull put on a shooting clinic for the visiting Mountaineers, pouring in 28 points on an impressive 8/10 from beyond the arc. Belton Mombollet showcased his prowess as well, registering a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Carson Lavender contributed another 12 points to the effort.

West Virginia's shooting was nothing short of remarkable, hitting 63% from the field and an astounding 13/21 from three-point range.

"We got good shots, and we executed," West Virginia head coach James Frizzell remarked. "Sometimes, it's as simple as that. A great win for us, to be sure, in a tough environment."

Senior guard Devonne Morris led the Rebels with 20 points, followed by Chris Blake's 18 points and Bennet Ziri's 11 points and five boards.

Next up, West Virginia will host rival Pittsburgh in the much-anticipated annual Backyard Brawl next Thursday.

Aaaand there goes the 5 ranked Big East teams down to 2. At least Uconn could provide a reasonable challenge for the crown. Look at the ACC with 4 top 5 teams though, we always marvel at the A-10 for being good here but that's something else from the ACC.

It's cool to see 3 undefeated teams halfway through the season, usually almost none make it through non-conference play in my experience. I think the longest I've seen a CPU team go undefeated before was Marquette somewhere between 19 to 24-0.

Pac-10 is beating up some people too. Will be interesting to see who comes out on top at the end of conference play. Crazy part is programs like UCLA, Arizona and Oregon are not even there. Cool to see Oregon State and Washington State playing well even if my Boise State Broncos suck.

Yeah, it would’ve been nice if the conference had held together a little better. Like you said, UConn will be a tough opponent either way, though, at least. Definitely impressive by the ACC! They tended to be the best conference during a lot of this legacy and it continues.

Agreed about the undefeated teams. I’m going off memory here, but I believe Saint Peter’s might still be undefeated, as well (or maybe they have one loss, not sure).

Yeah, it’s interesting how over thirty years some of the blue bloods have ebbed and flowed. Much is still the same, but there’s definitely been a lot of changes, too.

West Virginia surpassed the century mark in a resounding 100-69 victory over Pittsburgh in the Backyard Brawl at the Mountaineers' home court tonight.

The nation's top-ranked Mountaineers (16-0, 2-0) showcased an impressive shooting performance, hitting 58% from the field and 55% (11/20) from beyond the arc. Additionally, they outrebounded their rivals 38-22.

Though the Pittsburgh Panthers (7-5, 1-2) kept pace for much of the opening half, West Virginia closed it with a strong surge, taking a 45-31 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers continued to extend their advantage early in the second half, ultimately securing a comfortable win.

Stefon Hull paced West Virginia with 18 points, while Belton Mombollet contributed 16 points and eight boards. Carson Lavander notched a double-double, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Oscar Carroto came off the bench to add 12 points and seven assists.

Pittsburgh's senior forward Jaason Crawford led the Panthers with 17 points. Seven-footer Bingo Umeh chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds, and Damir Jeffers added 13 points.

West Virginia is set to face their most formidable challenge of the season on Sunday, as they travel to face No. 6 Connecticut.

No. 6 Connecticut (11-2, 3-1) secured a huge 78-74 victory at home today over top-ranked West Virginia (16-1, 2-1), handing the Mountaineers their first loss of the season.

UConn's 6'10" senior center Herschel Lagana delivered an impressive performance, tallying 13 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks. Jaison Gross contributed 16 points and five assists, while Lou Kilgore and Ryan Dickey added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

The Huskies found themselves down 46-33 at halftime after a late West Virginia surge in the first half. However, UConn mounted a comeback early in the second half, closing the gap and setting up a back-and-forth contest down the stretch.

Connecticut pulled ahead in the final moments and sealed the victory with crucial free throws.

The Huskies shot an efficient 46% (30/64) from the field and 42% (10/24) from beyond the arc. In contrast, West Virginia attempted a season-high 41 three-pointers, converting at a respectable 39% rate, but missed several key shots in the game's closing minutes.

"Sometimes, you live by the three and you die by the three," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "We used the three-pointer to get a double-digit lead at halftime, but the shots just stopped falling for us later in the game."

After posting 46 points in the first half, the Mountaineers managed only 28 in the second.

Stefon Hull led West Virginia with 17 points, albeit on 6/18 shooting. Carson Lavender recorded a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Barry Henning came off the bench to contribute four three-pointers and 16 points.

The Mountaineers will look to rebound next Thursday when they host Villanova at home.

Better for the first loss to come now than in the tournament. Ratings wise, how's the Big East looking this year?

Pittsburgh, UConn, and Notre Dame are the 2nd / 3rd / 4th highest rated teams in the conference, but I clear the field by 5 OVR points, so we are definitely the favorites on that metric. Agreed on the first loss, though. Wouldn't want to be 2014-2015 Kentucky in real life, haha.
