Big East Tournament - Quarterfinal Round

The top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (28-5) held off a spirited challenge from the No. 8-seeded Seton Hall Pirates (18-17) to secure an 87-81 victory tonight in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament.

The Pirates, who lost on a buzzer-beater three-pointer last month to West Virginia in Morgantown, gave another terrific effort, but were unable to come out on top, ending their NCAA Tournament chances, which were already on life support.

The Mountaineers were led by an outstanding performance from Stefon Hull, who scored 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Belton Mombollet contributed 16 points and Carson Lavender added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Seton Hall, which trailed by just one point at halftime, had a balanced scoring attack. Gordon Ross and Amit Janusauskas both tallied 13 points, while Scotty Forbes, Boris Conner, Scottie Evenstar and Laron Blanks each chipped in with nine.

West Virginia's bench provided a significant boost, with Oscar Carroto contributing 12 points and six rebounds, and Barry Henning adding six points.

Seton Hall put up a strong fight, shooting 49% from the field and 10-of-26 from beyond the arc. The Pirates' 16 assists and eight steals showed their teamwork and defensive prowess, but ultimately, they couldn't overcome West Virginia's high-scoring offense.

The Mountaineers will look to build on this win as they continue their pursuit of a deep run in the postseason. They will face Notre Dame tomorrow night.

Big East Tournament - Semifinal Round

The West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 74-64 in a thrilling college basketball matchup in the Big East Tournament Semifinals tonight at Madison Square Garden.

The Mountaineers were led by Stefon Hull, who scored 22 points on an inefficient 7-of-19 shooting. Belton Mombollet contributed 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for an impressive double-double, while Barry Henning came off the bench to add 15 points.

The Fighting Irish were paced by Anthony Ozier's 19 points and 8 rebounds. Austen Simon chipped in 13 points, while Zachary Boyd and Quintin Rivers scored 10 and 8 points, respectively.

Notre Dame struggled from the field, shooting 25-of-64 (39%) overall and 7-of-20 (35%) from three-point range. West Virginia fared better, shooting 27-of-60 (45%) from the field and 12-of-31 (39%) from beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers held a narrow 35-30 lead at halftime and managed to extend it in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Irish 39-34 in the game's final 20 minutes. Notre Dame couldn't overcome the deficit despite a valiant effort, ultimately falling by 10 points.

West Virginia will face Providence tomorrow night in the conference title game. The Friars, who are the sixth-seed in this year's Big East Tournament, defeated Villanova, the No. 2 seed, 70-62 earlier this evening to earn a berth in the championship game.

Big East Tournament - Championship Game

In an unexpected turn of events, the sixth-seeded Providence Friars (22-12) toppled the top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (29-6), 89-78, in the Big East Tournament Championship Game tonight.

The Friars came out strong in the first half, outscoring the Mountaineers 48-38, and maintained their momentum in the second half, adding 41 more points to secure their victory. At one point, the Friars led by as many as 21 points midway through the second half before the Mountaineers cut into the deficit late.

Taquan Forbes led the Friars with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while Aki Truscott contributed 14 points, and Percy Gibson and Alex Frank both added 12 points off the bench.

On the Mountaineers' side, Belton Mombollet had a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, followed by Carson Lavender with 12 points. Stefon Hull also scored 10 points and dished out four assists.

Providence had an impressive all-around performance, shooting 50% from the field (35-of-70) and 43% from beyond the arc (9-of-21). They also outrebounded West Virginia 40-32 and tallied 20 assists, compared to the Mountaineers' 16. West Virginia uncharacteristically struggled to shoot from beyond the arc, making just 27% (6-for-22) of their attempts.

With this win, the Providence Friars secure their spot in the NCAA Tournament and will look to carry their momentum into the Big Dance.

Oof. Kind of backing into the Big Dance this year. Hopefully it doesn’t effect things too much in the tournament

Yep, definitely not playing at our best right now. Will need to get a strong couple first rounds to get our mojo back!

I think we have the talent to win it all, but we haven’t been playing so well since conference play started. I certainly don’t feel as confident as I did in prior years. The USF game was pretty disheartening, in particular. That being said, Hull has been playing so well this year and Lavender / Mombollet have been great. If we can string some good games together, I have faith.
