No. 3 West Virginia (3-0) bested New Mexico (1-1) on the road 79-65 this evening at The Pit in Albuquerque, NM. The Lobos were a popular pick to pull off the early season upset at their home arena, but the Mountaineers jetted out to a 44-31 halftime lead and kept them at arm's length throughout the second half.

Stefon Hull sc ored 16 points and hit four three-pointers to lead West Virginia in scoring. Two of West Virginia's talented true freshman poured, Oscar Carroto and Tremmell Amerson, showed their potential tonight as they scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, from off the bench. Belton Mombollet also added 10 points and five boards.

Channing Grafs scored 19 points to lead New Mexico in scoring. Mario Baldwin added 11 points and four rebounds and Ricardo Oliphant totaled 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Lobos kept the game within reach largely with their free throw shooting, where they shot and efficient 19/22 (86%). It wasn't enough, though, as the Mountaineers held an 11-4 advantage in three-pointer made and shot 45% (28/62) from the field overall.

West Virginia will kick off the Blackjack Shootout on Friday against No. 18 Brigham Young.

      Blackjack Shootout A

No. 3 West Virginia (4-0) kept their undefeated season afloat and advanced to the next round of the Blackjacket Shootout with a 70-66 victory against the No. 18 Brigham Young Cougars (5-1), ending their undefeated season after six games.

The Mountaineers led by 10 points, 41-31, at halftime, but the Cougars clawed back in the second half and WVU had to hit free throws down the stretch in the final minute to secure the close, hard-fought victory.

It was really a game of wills between two players in tonight's game. BYU senior guard Jean-Baptiste Pratt, who also hails from Las Vegas, the setting for tonight's game, scored a career-high 29 points and hit seven three-pointers to lead the Cougars in scoring. Meanwhile, on the other side, Stefon Hull scored 23 points and added four steals, making 6/10 from three-point range to lead West Virginia in scoring.

Hull was West Virginia's only double-digit scorer. Demetrice Adkins was BYU's only double-digit scorer besides Pratt. Adkins scored 10 points from off the bench in 12 minutes of action.

BYU surprisingly held a 37-28 advantage on the glass tonight, but the Cougars fell short taking care of the basketball. They turned the basketball over 19 times compared to West Virginia's 11, and that ultimately turned the tables in tonight's close game.

West Virginia will face the winner of Miami (FL) and Towson in the final game of the Blackjacket Shootout A Bracket tomorrow. The winner of tomorrow's game will advance to the Blackjack Shootout Finals.

        Blackjack Shootout A

Oscar Carruto rescued No. 3 West Virginia (5-0) from a potential upset loss this evening against Towson (2-4) in the Blackjack Shootout A Finals with 16 points and eight rebounds in the Mountaineers' 62-53 victory to win the four-team bracket.

The Mountaineers trailed underdog Towson 26-22 at halftime, but Carruto was able to keep the Mountaineers in it and the true freshman backup point guard was the Mountaineer to score in double-figures.

West Virginia pulled ahead in the second half, but the Towson Tigers never let go and kept the game in touch until the final buzzer, losing to the powerhouse Mountaineers by single digits.

Sophomore guard Dexter Zeigler scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Towson in scoring, and was the only player on the team to score in double-figures. Seven-footer Garfield Kinloch did come close to a double-double, though, totaling eight points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks.

The Mountaineers struggled offensively, shooting a paltry 30% (19/64) from the floor, but outrebounded Towson 43-36. The Tigers didn't shoot much better at just 32% (20/62) from the floor. The Mountaineers also forced Towson into 16 turnovers, which proved key.

"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take the 'W'," remarked West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game. "We showed some resilience down the stretch to secure the victory, though we clearly have a lot to work on."

The Mountaineers have the next three days off before hosting the Princeton Tigers next Wednesday. Princeton is where Frizzell got his coaching career started at way back in the 2007-2008 season.

The king is back! Shaking off some rust in the last few games or just a weaker team this year? I hope those 5 ranked Big East teams hold up, feels like the rest of the conf hasn't stepped up in years.

FYI, your latest post has BYU on the opponent side instead of Towson.

It's hard to say. I go through periods where I don't play for a while, and I do think my level of play suffers from rust in those situations. However, in some ways this team is going to be a bit of an adjustment, so we'll see. Might be some playing down to competition, too.

I also hope to see the Big East hold up. I'm not sure if it has been my team's dominant play or what, but this conference really hasn't been all that competitive in a decade, which has been somewhat unfortunate. It's made things a bit less exciting than I hoped for when I came to West Virginia, but at this point I suppose I'm going to stay at WVU for the rest of this legacy. I am strongly considering starting up a new concurrent coaching legacy where I start out at a small school again just to shake things up, though.

It wasn't the prettiest game, but No. 1 West Virginia (6-0) kept their undefeated season afloat with a 70-55 victory over Princeton (6-4) this evening in Morgantown.

Tonight's game was actually tied at 28 apiece at halftime, but the Mountaineers took control early in the second half, extending the lead to double digits for the remainder of the game.

Stefon Hull scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead West Virginia in both categories. Sophomore guard Barry Henning, who has struggled in the first five games of this young season, scored 11 points from off the bench, as well.

The Tigers actually outrebounded West Virginia 38-37, but the Mountaineers held Princeton to just 34% (21/62) from the floor and 27% (7/26) from beyond the three-point arc. Princeton also struggled from the free throw line, where they made just half (6/12) of their attempts.

I’m a few days late, but wanted to wish this thread and Coach Frizzell a happy 15th anniversary! Absolutely incredible!

                              Oh, man, good catch!

I'm now 30 years old (going on 31 this summer), so I've had this going for half my life. Kind of crazy to think about! I think back to some of the key players earlier in this legacy (Wendell Lalugba, for example) and it's crazy to think that was over 10 years ago...in real life!

I am considering starting up a side legacy with a smaller school again just to experience those early struggles once again, but I don't think there's any way I could leave this legacy behind for good at this point. I'm pretty determined to finish it out to year No. 40 (as far as you can go in CH 2K8), assuming my files hold together until then. I do have a backup, which has come in use twice now after system failures.

Tonight, the No. 1 West Virginia Mountaineers (9-0) maintained their undefeated streak with a commanding 79-55 road win over the previously unbeaten No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini (7-1) in Champaign, IL.

Despite Illinois' impressive 7-0 start to the season, the Mountaineers asserted their dominance with a resounding 24-point victory on the Fighting Illini's home court.

Stefon Hull led the charge for West Virginia with 19 points, while Oscar Carroto added 12 points despite a career-worst six turnovers. Johnny Riggs contributed 11 points and four rebounds to the winning effort.

For Illinois, Ime Umeh put up 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, although he struggled with his shooting, hitting just 7/23 from the field and 1/13 from beyond the arc.

The Fighting Illini's offense faltered throughout the game, shooting a mere 37% (24/65) overall and an abysmal 10% (2/20) from three-point range. Marc West (3/4 FG) was the only Illinois player to shoot above 50% from the field.

West Virginia head coach James Frizzell praised his team's performance, saying, "Tonight's win is big for us. We seem to really be hitting our stride lately, and this is the best game I've seen us play to date. I'm really excited about where we could go this season. This team is one of the deepest and best defensive teams I've coached. The sky's the limit for us."

The Mountaineers will have a short break before hosting their rivals, the 7-2 Virginia Tech Hokies, on Monday, with the Hokies eager to pull off an upset against their formidable opponents.
