      #3 West Virginia (18-2) vs. Providence (12-7)
      Amica Mutual Pavilion
      Providence, RI
      January 20th, 2038

Barry Henning missed a layup as time expired and Providence (12-7, 5-2) held on to upset No. 3 West Virginia (18-2, 4-2) at home tonight with a 94-93 overtime victory.

The Friars led 45-32 at halftime, but the Mountaineers battled back in the second half and the game went to overtime tied 78-78.

West Virginia opened the overtime period strongly, and at one point led by five points, but the No. 3-ranked team in the land made key mistakes down the stretch, including turning the basketball over on an inbounds pass with under a minute left that led to Providence's go-ahead basket by John David Guzman.

Guzman scored 16 points and dished out nine assists for Providence. Aki Truscott was the Friars' leading scorer, though, with 25 points and eight rebounds. Monty Nielson added 11 points and eight rebounds and Darrel Stone scored 10 points from off the bench.

The box score stats for both teams were pretty even across the broad. West Virginia outshot Providence slightly, but both teams made around half their shots, and both shot exactly 11/22 from three-point range. The two teams were also nearly exactly even on the glass (36-35 in favor of Providence), though the Friars did record eight offensive rebounds compared to just four for West Virginia.

Belton Mombollet scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds for West Virginia. Joshua Wilkerson scored 17 points and Carson Lavender added 14 points and nine rebounds, coming just one board short of a coveted double-double. Morris Filipovic and Stefon Hull also scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.

After starting the season 16-0, the Mountaineers have now lost two of their last four games. Both losses were on the road. West Virginia will look to get back on track at home on Saturday when they host the Georgetown Hoyas.

          Morgantown, WV
          November 25th, 2037

No. 2 West Virginia (19-2, 5-2) came back from 17 points down in the first half to win at home against Georgetown (9-11, 2-5) tonight, 88-77.

The Mountaineers trailed by 10 points at halftime, and they didn't grab their first lead of the game until Barry Henning hit a go-ahead straight-away three-pointer to make it 61-60 with 10:38 remaining in the second half. From there, the Mountaineers gradually seized control down the stretch and were able to come away with a double-digit win.

Both teams shot the ball well, but West Virginia had a huge advantage from beyond the arc, where they shot 15/28 (54%). Georgetown, in contrast, only hit four of their 17 three-point attempts.

It was a tale of two halves for West Virginia offensively as they managed just 29 first half points before pouring in 59 points in the game's final 20 minutes, a pace that would've yielded 118 points over the course of 40 minutes.

Stefon Hull hit five three-pointers and Joshua Wilkerson hit four as the two totaled 15 and 12 points, respectively. Belton Mombollet was the start of the show, though, as the senior power forward poured in 19 points and seven rebounds. Carson Lavender just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Oscar Carroto added 15 points and six assists from off the bench.

Herman Johnson was Georgetown's leading scorer with 17 points. Haim Medine tallied 16 points and seven rebounds and 7'1" senior center Saul Mitchell ended with 12 points and five boards.

Next, West Virginia travels to New York, NY to take on the St. John's Red Storm on Monday night.

Yeah, losing to Georgetown would've been a catastrophe considering how bad they are, so I am glad we avoided that. Fortunately, the Hoyas really struggled to hit threes down the stretch.

Stefon Hull sank 10 three-pointers and scored 32 points to lead No. 2 West Virginia (20-2, 6-2) to an easy 95-53 win this evening against St. John's (7-12, 1-7) at Madison Square Garden.

The Mountaineers jumped all over the Red Storm right from the start and the game was never really in doubt. West Virginia shot 56% collectively as a team and 57% from three-point range, making 17 of 30 three-point attempts, including 10 by Stefon Hull alone.

St. John's managed just 36% from the floor offensively, and shot just 20% from downtown, making only six of their 30 attempts.

Joshua Wilkerson also scored 13 points for West Virginia, and Belton Mombollet added 12 points. Carson Lavender came up one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Happy Henson was the only Red Storm player to reach double-figures as he scored 13 points despite only making six of 15 shot attempts.

Next, West Virginia will attempt to get even with UConn on Saturday after losing in Storrs, CT earlier this season.

Stefon Hull made 12 three-pointers and poured in a career-high 43 points to lead No. 2 West Virginia (21-2, 7-2) to an 86-73 home victory this evening against No. 6 Connecticut (16-3, 8-2).

The Huskies, who won against West Virginia earlier this season in Storrs, CT, simply could not stop the 6'6" Hull. The junior made 14 of his 26 shot attempts, including 13 of 22 from three-point range. He also collected nine rebounds and three steals, coming just one rebound short of a double-double.

"Sometimes, you are just feeling it," explained Hull. "I've felt it before, but I don't think I've ever felt it for that long. It seemed like I almost had to try to miss in order to miss shots at certain points in the game."

The Huskies' defense probably didn't help matters as they maintained a zone defense throughout much of the game that didn't cover the three-point shot very well. As a team, the Mountaineers shot 47 attempts from three, making 21 of them. 47 of their 69 total shot attempts were from beyond the arc.

"We took what they gave us, and we took all we could eat," joked Hull.

Barry Henning also scored 14 points for West Virginia, and Belton Mombollet tallied a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Senior guard Ryan Dickey scored 17 points for Connecticut. Jaison Gross added 16 points and Lou Kilgore totaled 13 points and five assists.

Next, West Virginia will hit the road again to take on Villanova in Philadelphia, PA on Monday evening.

With a career record of 900-212, Frizzell expressed satisfaction with his milestone win and praised the team's recent performance, stating, "We did a great job out there. Obviously, I'm happy with win No. 900, but I'm also happy with how this team has been playing as of late."

Carson Lavender delivered a standout performance for West Virginia, contributing 16 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. In a thrilling upset, the Cincinnati Bearcats (13-11, 5-6) toppled the No. 2-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (22-3, 8-3) on the road with an 81-79 overtime victory tonight.

Despite a strong start by the Mountaineers, who led by double digits in the first half, the relentless Bearcats clawed their way back, narrowing the gap to just three points, 33-30, at halftime.

The second half saw Cincinnati catch fire, surging ahead by nine points at one point. Despite holding a six-point lead in the final minute, the Bearcats faltered at the free-throw line on a couple one-and-one attempts, allowing Joshua Wilkerson to sink a last-second three-pointer as time expiring, sending the game into overtime at 69-69.

West Virginia's momentum fizzled in overtime, though, as Cincinnati took an early lead. The Mountaineers had one last chance to snatch victory, but Stefon Hull's desperate shot fell short, sealing the two-point win for the Bearcats.

Hull, who scored 43 points just two games prior, was held to a meager five points on a 2-of-13 shooting performance. The Mountaineers struggled overall, hitting only 40% from the field and a dismal 25% from beyond the arc. In addition, they only converted a mere 7-of-13 attempts from the free throw line.

In contrast, Cincinnati converted 14-of-18 free throws and shot a respectable 41% (9/22) from three-point range.

The Bearcats were led by double-double performances from Brandon Conner (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Peter Randolph (10 points, 13 rebounds), with senior point guard Clay Smith topping the scoreboard with 19 points, five assists, and four steals. Emmett Atkins added another 14 points to the tally.

For the Mountaineers, Oscar Carroto scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds but struggled at the line, making just 4-of-9 free throws. Belton Mombollet notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, despite a 9-of-21 shooting performance. Joshua Wilkerson contributed 15 points and four rebounds, including the clutch shot that forced overtime. Barry Henning chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

West Virginia will look to bounce back as they head to South Bend, IN, to face No. 22 Notre Dame next Tuesday evening.
