The No. 2-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (2-0) decisively defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes (2-1) tonight, 84-63, handing the Hawkeyes their first loss of the young season.
Stefon Hull led the Mountaineers with an impressive 26 points, shooting 10-for-20 from the field and 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. Tremmell Amerson contributed a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, adding two steals and two blocks to his stats. Brandin Plummer also had an impressive game from of the bench, totaling 10 points and seven rebounds.
For the Hawkeyes, Neal Oliver was the top scorer with 19 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field and 5-for-9 from the three-point range. Karim Waller added 13 points, seven assists, and one steal, while Kelvin Aguilar chipped in with 10 points, five steals, and two assists.
Iowa struggled with their shooting, hitting only 23-for-63 (37%) from the field and 8-for-27 (30%) from beyond the arc. West Virginia capitalized on their opponents' struggles, shooting a more efficient 28-for-51 (55%) from the field and 8-for-17 (47%) from three-point territory.
West Virginia led by nine points at halftime, 39-30, and continued to build on their lead in the second half, outscoring the Hawkeyes 45-33 in the game's final 20 minutes of action. The Mountaineers' strong performance on both ends of the floor secured their 21-point victory over the Hawkeyes.
West Virginia has a day off before hosting the San Francisco Dons on Saturday. Mountaineers' head coach James Frizzell coached for the Dons prior to taking the job in Morgantown over a decade ago.
