Thanks for the kind words, and your following along is appreciated!

My secret to keeping up with this is just not overdoing it with the pace or the reporting (I could make my reports more detailed, but then I’d burn out based on past experience), and being okay with it going dormant for months at a time, since my interest in this game ebbs and flows with the seasons. But the desire to get back to this always wins out eventually.

My end goal is to finish out the full 40-season legacy. I think I’m on season #30 right now, so I’m not even close yet, though. At the pace I’ve been playing lately, it will be many real life years before I get to season #30, but maybe I’ll try to pick up the pace again sometime...

Anyways, I’ll have another real update out soon. I did finally play the Cincinnati game the other day!

      vs.
      #1 West Virginia (23-4) vs. Cincinnati (11-16)
      Fifth Third Arena
      Cincinnati, OH
      February 25th, 2037

No. 1 West Virginia (23-4, 12-3) got things back on track this evening with a close win on the road against Cincinnati (11-16, 3-12). The Mountaineers trailed by as many as nine points in the second half, but they pulled ahead late to end their skid which saw them lose three out of four games against the gauntlet of Georgetown, South Florida, Notre Dame, and No. 3 Syracuse over the last couple weeks.

Felipe Delgado scored a team-high 19 points to lead West Virginia in scoring. The senior forward also added eight rebounds and five assists, both also team-highs. Stefon Hull struggled shooting from beyond the arc, where he made just two of 10 attempts, but scored 13 points thanks to some production from the free throw line. Damond Pasco added 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals and Barry Henning also added 12 points from off the bench.

The keys to tonight's closer-than-expected victory tonight for West Virginia were turnovers and free throws. The Mountaineers forced Cincinnati into 17 turnovers, and Cincinnati only shot 17/32 (53%) from the free throw line.

"If [Cincinnati] make[s] their free throws, we don't win this game," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game. "We played pretty poorly and let them get way too many open looks defensively. On offense, we just weren't getting it done most of the time. We got some decent looks, but they weren't falling."

The Mountaineers shot only 41% from the floor, including just 30% (9/30) from beyond the three-point arc.

Senior guard Toby Courselle led Cincinnati in scoring with 15 points. Peter Randolph also totaled a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Bearcats.

Next, West Virginia will host DePaul on Saturday in their next-to-last home game of the season.

No. 1 West Virginia (22-4, 13-3) breezed past DePaul (10-18, 5-11) this evening 82-56 in their penultimate home game of the season.

The Mountaineers led wire-to-wire while shooting 49% from the floor overall, and 48% (12/25) from three-point range. WVU was also a perfect 16/16 from the free throw line.

Felipe Delgado shot an efficient 8/11 from the field and scored 20 points to lead West Virginia in scoring. Barry Henning scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds from off the bench, and Damond Pasco and Stefon Hull added 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Geoffrey Daniel was the only DePaul player to score in double-figures. The 6'9" junior guard scored 12 points, but shot 0/4 from three-point range. Overall, the Blue Demons shot just 4/14 (29%) from beyond the arc.

West Virginia will host Pittsburgh in the two teams' annual Backyard Brawl next Thursday. The Backyard Brawl will also be Senior Night for the Mountaineers. Felipe Delgado and George Neale will be suiting up for the final time for the Mountaineers.

              March 5th, 2037

No. 1 West Virginia (25-4, 14-3) cruised to a surprisingly easy victory over hated rival Pittsburgh (18-12, 8-9) this evening 78-48 on Senior Night in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers jumped all over the Panthers from the opening tip and extinguished any hopes of a Pitt victory pretty early. The Panthers trailed 42-23 at halftime, and it only got worse from there in the second half.

Senior forward Felipe Delgado scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead West Virginia in scoring. George Neale, a reserve power forward and West Virginia's only other senior on the roster, scored two points in three minutes from off the bench.

"This is a great win for our seniors Felipe [Delgado] and George [Neale]," beamed West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "Felipe is such a talent and it's great to see him go out on Senior Night with such a great performance, against our biggest rival, no less."

Stefon Hull added 17 points, six rebounds, and four steals, and Damond Pasco scored 11 points and dished out five assists on a perfect 4/4 from the field, including 3/3 from three-point range.

Aron Whaley scored 13 points to lead Pittsburgh in scoring. Joey Owen added 12 points and seven boards.

The Mountaineers had a strong offensive performance, shooting 51% (29/57) from the field and 50% (12/24) from three-point range while outrebounding Pittsburgh 34-23.

West Virginia will close out the regular season at Rutgers in two days.

Senior forward Felipe Delgado, in his final regular season game, scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed seven rebounds to propel No. 1 West Virginia (26-4, 15-3) to a 91-67 victory this afternoon against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (11-19, 3-15) in both teams' regular season finales.

Delgado shot an efficient 11/19 from the field, and 9/11 from the free throw line. He also hit four three-pointers.

"I was just feeling it today," explained Delgado after the game. "I was getting some good looks, and they were going in. I was aggressive when I needed to be, and took the open jump shot when it was there. I hope I can carry over my strong play into the postseason later this month."

Delgado's 35-point performance marks his third straight game scoring at least 20 points, and his fourth straight game scoring at least 19. The 6'9" senior seems to be peaking at the right time.

Stefon Hull added 16 points for West Virginia, and Joshua Wilkerson scored 11 from off the bench.

Rutgers actually gave West Virginia a surprisingly tough fight today. The Scarlet Knights cut the West Virginia lead to just nine points midway through the second half before the Mountaineers, led by Delgado, went on an extensive run over the remainder of the game to eventually win by 24 points.

                    The Mountaineers outrebounded Rutgers 39-26.

Rutgers senior guard Cal Goodman, in his final collegiate game (Rutgers will miss the Big East Tournament), scored 20 points and added seven assists. Dannorriss Mulic, also a senior, had a strong performance with 16 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

West Virginia finishes the regular season with a 26-4 overall record and a 15-3 Big East Conference record. The Mountaineers will play in the 2037 Big East Tournament next week at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.

Big East Tournament - Quarterfinal Round

West Virginia (27-4) advanced to the semifinal round of the 2037 Big East Tournament this evening with a 78-63 victory over the St. John's Red Storm (16-16). St. John's trailed just 34-32 at halftime, but the Mountaineers pulled ahead in the second half for a 15-point victory.

The Mountaineers shot just 1/11 from three-point range in the first half, but recovered nicely in the second half, scoring 44 points and hitting 6/14 (43%) from deep.

With their guard play struggling, the Mountaineers got outsized contributions from their starting frontcourt. Belton Mombollet had one of the best games of his career as he hit 7/11 from the field and totaled 18 points and seven rebounds. Carson Lavender shot an efficient 6/8 and tallied an impressive, 14-point, 15-rebound double-double. Felipe Delgado battled foul trouble and missed all four of his three-point attempts, but still scored 10 points and was the only other Mountaineer in double-figures.

St. John's, in contrast, got strong play from their guards. Guards Artur Carter and Wallace Randall both scored 16 points each and were on the only Red Storm players to score in double-figures.

West Virginia will face Marquette in the semifinal round tomorrow night. The Golden Eagles are the No. 3 seed and defeated No. 6-seeded South Florida 96-83 in the quarterfinal round earlier tonight.

Big East Tournament - Semifinal Round

No. 3-seeded Marquette (20-12) bolstered their NCAA Tournament resume with a huge 67-64 upset victory over No. 2-seeded West Virginia (27-5) this evening in the Big East Tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.

The Golden Eagles trailed by one point, 64-63, until Freddie Ager hit a three-point shot from the wing with 2.2 seconds left to put Marquette up 66-64. To make matters worse, Ager was fouled on the play and he converted the free throw to put Marquette up 67-64.

West Virginia got one last chance to keep their conference tournament championship hopes alive, but Damond Pasco missed a three-point heave as time expired and Marquette advanced to the Big East Tournament Championship Game tomorrow evening.

Ager hit 7/11 from the field and totaled 19 points and six rebounds to lead Marquette in scoring. Kamarr Whitworth also scored 19 points and grabbed four boards and Jibran Parham added 11 points.

Marquette shot 53% (8/15) from three-point range and forced West Virginia into 16 turnovers tonight. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, shot 37% (11/30) from three-point range, and only 40% (24/60) from the floor overall.

Stefon Hull scored 18 points to lead West Virginia in scoring. Felipe Delgado scored 17 points and eight rebounds and Belton Mombollet added 14 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

"Obviously, it's disappointing to not capture the conference tournament championship," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "This has become something that we expect to do every year, and this year was no different. But we just have to go back to the drawing board and try to work out the kinks before the Big Dance. This is still a very good team and we have every intention of winning it all."

Marquette will face Notre Dame in the Big East Tournament Championship Game tomorrow night. The Fighting Irish, who defeated Connecticut 73-70 in their semifinal game earlier, were the ninth-seeded team in this year's Big East Tournament and will be looking to punch their ticket to the Big Dance if they can upset Marquette tomorrow night.
