Shannon Edwards scored 26 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to lead No. 2 West Virginia to a season-opening win at home against Evansville.
The Purple Aces (0-1) trailed 48-27 at halftime, but stormed back with a 17-4 run of their own to cut the WVU lead to 52-43 midway through the second half as the Mountaineers (1-0) couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. However, the Mountaineers righted the ship and extended the lead once again and cruised to their 18-point victory.
The Mountaineers played well defensively and outrebounded Evansville 41-28, but struggled shooting the ball as they only shot 39% (25/64) from the floor. However, they got to the foul line early and often and converted their free throws at an impressive 92% rate (22/24).
Freshman Nik Buscher scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his first career game as a Mountaineer. He struggled shooting the ball (3/9 from the field), but was effective at getting to the line and converting his opportunities there as he shot 9/9 from the charity stripe. Myron DeLeon also added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Vince Neale scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Purple Aces.Freshman Koro Ogunoye also scored 16 points and grabbed five boards and Ronald Archibald and Bennet Winter scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Next, West Virginia will take on St. Francis (NY) in the opening round of the Paradise Jam in St. Petersburg, FL.
