      Big East Tournament Semifinals

Top-seeded West Virginia (32-1) defeated fourth-seeded Villanova (19-11) 84-63 this evening to advance to the Big East Tournament Championship Game tomorrow evening against #2-seeded Louisville.

Villanova nabbed the early lead tonight, but the Mountaineers battled back to retake the lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Eventually, the Mountaineers would stretch the lead to 38-32 at halftime with the big story being Happy Olson's performance. The 7'1" junior has been in and out of the rotation this season (though in since conference play began), but he exploded on the scene tonight with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the first half alone. His previous career-highs were 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Mountaineers hit a pair of threes over their first two possessions after halftime to push the lead to 44-32. Over the course of the first three minutes of the second half, they would go on a 13-2 run to take a 51-34 advantage with 17 minutes remaining. The Wildcats would battle back, however, and went on a run of their own to cut the lead to 51-42 after back-to-back threes a few minutes later.

Villanova pulled to within four points at the 9:12 mark with the score 58-54 in WVU's favor, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get. Predrag Gabler hit a three-pointer to extend the Mountaineers' lead to 11 points with seven minutes remaining and Fred Joiner nailed the coffin shut with a dagger three with 2:52 remaining that gave the Mountaineers a 14-point advantage.

Happy Olson was spectacular in the first half, but he was also excellent in the second half. He ended the game with a shocking 21 points, 20 rebounds, and three steals. Olson's amazing performance was important tonight as Nile Stevenson, WVU's leading scorer, played what was probably the worst game of his career as he went 0/8 from the field and only grabbed four rebounds in 22 minutes of playing time. Junior center O.J. Palmer wasn't much better as he only shot 3/9 from the field.

Fred Joiner also had a great game for West Virginia as he totaled 21 points, five rebounds, and seven assists. Predrag Gabler hit four threes and added 18 points and six rebounds.

Villanova was led by senior guards Drake Bain and Abe Kleiza. Bain totaled 24 points and six assists while Kleiza added 22 points and three rebounds.

With the loss, Villanova awaits a potential NCAA Tournament berth. The Wildcats sit on the bubble and RPI of 47, but went 14-4 in Big East Conference play this year and are projected to receive a #11 seed in the current bracketology posting.

West Virginia will advance and get a shot at revenge against Louisville in the championship game. The Cardinals handed the Mountaineers their first and only loss of the season a few weeks ago in Louisville. Louisville defeated Connecticut 62-56 in the other semifinal to reach tomorrow's final.

Thank you. It was our destiny (also, outside the top 4-5 the Big East is a joke, so it was more likely than in most years).

Yeah, Happy Olson really underperformed last season and to start this season, but he has really stepped it up a notch lately. He's got all the physical tools to get it done and is our presumed starter at PF next season with Stevenson graduating.

                    Big East Tournament Championship Game

Revenge has been served! #1-seeded West Virginia (33-1) won their first Big East Tournament Championship since 2027 this evening as they defeated #2-seeded Louisville (31-5) by a final score of 71-62.

This game was neck-and-neck with the Mountaineers holding a general advantage throughout. West Virginia made a few runs to extend the lead, but the Cardinals battled back each time to make it close once again.

West Virginia led for the duration of the second half except for a period right in the middle of the half when the Cardinals went up 51-49. However, Happy Olson was having none of it as he converted an and-one for a three-point play to give the Mountaineers the lead once again on the ensuing possession.

"This is a great win for us and this program," beamed WVU head coach James Frizzell. "We came up short the last couple years, so it feels great to be back in Madison Square Garden and bringing home hardware. We played a great game against a great team. It wasn't easy, but we did what we needed to and we'll move on to the Big Dance next week."

Fred Joiner led the Mountaineers in scoring with 14 points, three rebounds, and five assists. O.J. Palmer battled four trouble, but still managed 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocks in 23 minutes. Happy Olson had another great game as he got extended playing time due to Palmer's foul issues and made the best of it with 13 points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocks.

Dee Granger led Louisville with 13 points, seven boards, and three assists. Mamadou Stapley added 11 points and eight rebounds on an inefficient 5/17 shooting. In addition, he fouled out in the closing minutes of the game. Willie Flowers was the only other double-digit scorer for the Cardinals as he came off the bench to contribute 10 points and three rebounds.

With the victory, both teams will await their NCAA Tournament berths. The Mountaineers are the clear-cut #1 overall seed while the Cardinals will wait and see whether they receive a #1 or #2 seed in this year's tournament.

Looks like the 8 man rotation worked well. Congrats on the win.. I think Louisville gets the #1 as well along with Virginia and Virginia Tech. If there was ever a year for all 4 #1's to make the Final 4, this would be my pick. Could we have a rematch of WVU vs Virginia Tech or WVU vs Louisville in the title game. Could be get the WVU vs Virginia game that should've been. Lot's of great stories come Selection Sunday
