vs.
#15 Mississippi Valley State (19-13) vs. #2 West Virginia (28-7)
Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena
Spokane, WA
March 17th, 2022
Coach Frizzell won his 400th career game this afternoon as his second-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (28-7) powered past the 15th-seeded Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (19-13) 67-54. With the victory, Coach Frizzell's career record moves to 400-118 (.772).
Mississippi Valley State came out strong and took an early 21-9 lead as the Mountaineers seemingly came out sleepwalking. WVU would strike back and the game would go to halftime with the game tied at 33 apiece. However, a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament is not supposed to be tied at halftime in the first round.
Despite their struggles in the first half, the Mountaineers did pull away in the second half en route to their 13-point victory.
It was a poor shooting night for both squads. WVU managed to shoot 40% from the floor and only hit three of their 15 three-point attempts. The Delta Devils shot 38% and only made one of their 14 attempts from beyond the arc. WVU owned a 38-28 rebounding advantage and won the turnover battle 10 to 13.
The Mountaineers were led by Marquel Proffitt's double-double. The senior center tallied 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Allan Pena added 12 points and four rebounds. Justino Whitworth totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and three steals while Osei Forney added 10 points.
Matt Helms led the Delta Devils with 10 points and five rebounds. Keon Granger also played well, especially in the first half, as he ended with 10 points.
West Virginia will play against #10-seeded Oregon State Beavers on Saturday for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. Note that West Virginia blew out Oregon State 77-56 in last year's Final Four when Oregon State was the #1 seed out of the Midwest Regional.
