It wasn't pretty, but No. 3 West Virginia (18-2, 7-1) won its second consecutive game this evening against the Providence Friars (11-11, 2-7). After starting out 0-6 in Big East Conference play, the Friars had won two consecutive games in a row coming into this one and they put up a good fight, but just could not close it out as the Mountaineers prevailed 82-74.

"They gave us a tough run, but we came through in the end and our guys hit some clutch free throws in the final minute to seal the deal," explained WVU's Coach Frizzell.

The Mountaineers led for the vast majority of the game, but the Friars kept the WVU lead in single digits much of the time. Defensively, WVU was not quite up to par and the Friars' Marques Park did some serious scoring in the first half to keep Providence in it. Park, 6'7" senior small forward out of Cambridge, MA, scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half. In the end, he flamed out a bit in the second period and only ended up shooting eight-for-23 in total, but his performance in the first half was the only thing keeping this game close.

Senior 7'1" center Adrian Valavicius picked up the slack in the second half for the Friars as he tallied 14 points, five rebounds, and four blocks tonight. Vitor Alujevic also added 14 points and three assists.

D.C. Montgomery led the Mountaineers in scoring with 16 points, though he had a terrible night shooting the basketball. Fortunately, the sophomore was able to get to the free throw line early and often to make up for it. Montgomery also tallied four rebounds and a career-high mark of six assists. Len Shields tallied a double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Leandro Summers added 11 points while Anderson Black totaled 10 points, four assists, and five steals.

The Mountaineers are now off to the best start in school history at 18-2 and are in sole possession of first place in the Big East.

West Virginia faces a tough test on January 31st as the Mountaineers will travel to Philadelphia to take on No. 14 Villanova.

Thanks, guys! I think this really might be the best team I've ever had. We're not perfect, but we don't have any real weaknesses, either.

No. 3 West Virginia (19-2, 8-1) won its third game in a row this evening as the Mountaineers outlasted the 14th-ranked Villanova Wildcats on the road by a final score of 81-73. The Wildcats (15-6, 5-4) have now lost two games in a row.

West Virginia and Villanova went back-and-forth, trading punches all game long. In the end, the Mountaineers managed to build a slim lead when it mattered most and the Mountaineers sank all eight of their free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the victory. In total, the Mountaineers shot 23-27 (85%) from the charity stripe tonight.

Len Shields led the Mountaineers with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. He was a dominant force down low all game along as he physically dominated the smaller Villanova defenders. In the end, he made eight of his 12 shot attempts and sank five of his six attempts from the free throw line, including two key ones in the final minute. D.C. Montgomery also had a nice game for the Mountaineers as he ended with 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Senior point guard Darcel McGuire led the way for the Wildcats as he scored a career-high 22 points. Fellow guard Cordell Huff added 10 points and three steals while Rheett Petkunas contributed 14 points. Phillip Salisbery also came off the bench to add 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

With the victory, the Mountaineers are now 8-1 at the halfway point of conference play. West Virginia will face a tough one next as they will take on the Connecticut Huskies next week in Storrs, CT.

Notably, WVU's Coach Frizzell won his 497th game today as his career mark now stands at 497-156. Frizzell, now in his 19th year as a head coach and his seventh year at WVU, needs three more victories to tally the landmark 500th victory of his coaching career. If WVU can defeat Connecticut, that victory will likely come at home against DePaul on February 15th.

This is great, I didn't know anyone still did in depth blogs on CH 2k8. I'll need to read more of it later when I have time but I can't believe you started out at Princeton. The Ivy league scares me having no conference tournament. I can see that your doing very well now 19 years into it though.

Just so you know I put College Hoops in the today and started up a new coaching legacy. The latest roster save I have from 2kshare before it shut down is 2012. So I am thinking I will start there and maybe sim the first 2 seasons and see what offers I get.

Of course the roster set worked perfectly because UC Davis was a school available and the bulk of my roster are Soph's.

Thanks, and, yes, this is a really good team I have. I think we have a good shot at winning it all, though we'll probably have to get through Tennessee first and that is going to be very difficult.

I enjoyed the Ivy League. Truth be told, I missed having a conference tournament, but it was still a lot of fun.

                          BTW, welcome!

Of course the roster set worked perfectly because UC Davis was a school available and the bulk of my roster are Soph's.
Yes, I see. Welcome back! Yes, it is sad to see 2K Share down, but it had a good run. I'm still using the same rosters I downloaded way back in 2008. Of course, I haven't played a game outside of this legacy in a long time, so I guess it doesn't really matter at this point, haha.

Len Shields scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help propel his Mountaineers past Connecticut (15-7, 6-4) 83-80 this evening in Big East Conference action. No. 2 West Virginia (20-2, 9-1) gave up 49 second half points, but scored 40 of their own in their slim victory.

Both teams came in hot with three-game winning streaks, but Connecticut saw its winning streak snapped in the loss.

In addition to Shields' performance, Anderson Black added 13 points, four assists, and four steals. Jud Helms came off the bench to scored 13 points and grab three rebounds. Waitari Trammell also played well from off the bench as he tallied 12 points and four steals and hit four key free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the game.

Notably, D.C. Montgomery had what might be described as the worst game of his career. The Mountaineers' leading scorer, who came in averaging 19 points per game, only managed five points and three assists this evening and shot one-for-10 from the floor.

Chauncey Gogerty scored a game-high 25 points for the Huskies, but his efforts were not enough. He also tallied four rebounds and four assists. Adham Juan Barea scored 13 points for UConn while Jeffrey Marsh and Mackenzie Craven scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

West Virginia will host an ailing Cincinnati Bearcats squad next week.
