Princeton Holds on Against Huggins' Mountaineers

    12/4 @ West Virginia

    Final: 70-54

West Virginia may be having a down year as they entered the game sporting a 5-3 record, but that still does not take away the magnificence of this win. Princeton went into Morgantown, WV and jumped out to an early 15-4 lead in the hostile Coliseum. Princeton led 40-26 at halftime, but let West Virginia come back to get within one point with four minutes remaining. From there, Wendell Lalugba took over and carried the Tigers to a huge victory. Lalugba, sometimes referred to as "Mr. Clutch" by some of the Princeton faithful, took on the scoring load in the clutch as he ended with 20 points and 4 rebounds. "Wendell really turns it up a notch in the clutch and has won us a lot of games. He has been our go-to man since he arrived here a couple years ago and he really is 'Mr. Clutch' as some of our fans call him," stated Coach Frizzell. Martin Sow had a good game down low as he tallied 17 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Reynold Gross distributed the ball well, as usual, and ended with 14 points and 7 assists.

    Princeton is now 10-1.

    Top 25 News

For the first time in Coach Frizzell's tenure at Princeton, the Princeton Tigers have entered into the top 25 media poll. The Tigers land ranked #24. The Tigers remained unranked in the coaches' poll and are ranked #2 in the mid-major poll behind 6-0 Nevada. "We are really honored to enter the poll and hope to stay there for a very long time!" exclaimed Coach Frizzell.

    Recruiting News

12/5 - Last day of Fall Signing Perioud

Lee Williamson of 2khoops.com has learned that two recruits have given their letters of intent to play basketball for Princeton next season. Kirby Guzman, a three star small forward out of Boston, MA will join the squad next season and will look to follow in the footsteps of fellow statesman Wendell Lalugba in being a standout small forward. Guzman is ranked #361 overall and is the 83rd ranked small forward of the 2012 class.

Benjamin McBridle also gave his letter of intent to play for Princeton next season. McBridle hails from Charlotte, NC and is the 174th ranked overall recruit of the 2012 recruiting class. The three star shooting guard is the 54th ranked recruit of the class. Below is a look at Coach Frizzell's newest recruits.

    1. Benjamin McBridle 6'2 194 (Charlotte, NC - #174 overall, #54 SG) 3*
    2. Kirby Guzzman 6'7 210 (Boston, MA - #361 overall, #83 SF) 3*

Coach Frizzell is stil eying two other recruits for this classs in five star All-American point guard Wesley French and 6'9 small forward C.J. Harrington. Harrington is very crucial for Coach Frizzell to sign because Princeton will be losing three of it's four big men next season. Wesley French would be a bonus to sign for Coach Frizzell. Williamson stated about Coach Frizzell's chances to sign the two recruits, "Surprisingly, Coach Frizzell has a great chance at landing both recruits. Wesley French was near to signing with Princeton during the fall signing period, but decided to wait until spring in case things change. Princeton has a huge lead on every other school on his list with Temple, his second choice, trailing far behind. I think it's fair to say that he will sign with Princeton. Harrington is a little less sure about where he wants to play, but I think he'll go to Princeton too. Princeton is #1 on his list in from of Evansville, Indiana State, and Central Michigan, so even though Harrington hails from Chicago, IL, I still think he'll head to Princeton where he will start right away and will play on a very good team. Coach Frizzell also has a backup plan in Theodoore Dearmon who is ready to sign with the Tigers. However, Coach Frizzell would rather go with French or Harrington if at all possible. Dearmon is actually related to Princeton assistant coach Everett Dearmon and that is why he wants to play for Princeton." Below is a look at Coach Frizzell's targets that are seniors.

    1. Wesley French 6'0 199 (Baltimore, MD - #14 overall, #6 PG) 5*, All-American, Mr. Basketball - scholarship offered
    2. C.J. Harrington 6'9 214 (Chicago, IL - #204 overall, #31 PF) 3* - scholarship offered
    3. Theodore Dearmon 6'7 209 (Bronx, NY - #407 overall, #87 SF) 3*

      Congrats on getting PU ranked!!

Back when I was a kid, many moons ago, it was usually the Quakers that ever got ranked.

How is French's interest in coming to Princeton?
If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a soldier.

        Thanks!

French currently has 92% interest in coming to Princeton and no other school is even cloes to that (Temple is about 75%), so I should land him unless something drastic happens!

Well, if we can consistently get recruits like French then a national title coud be in the works!

I don't suspect me getting that talented for at least five more years, though, but we have a tendency to pull off some upsets so who knows?

              Princeton Falls to Michigan

              12/8 @ Michigan

              Final: 66-69

On the road against a 4-3, but talented, Michigan squad, the Tigers of Princeton led early on and had a 29-26 halftime advantage. However, Princeton squandered away the lead in the second half and paid the price. Princeton found itself down 69-66 with two seconds remaining and one last chance to make a three to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately, Webdell Lalugba's shot fell short and the Tigers lost their second game of the year. Wendell Lalugba struggled all game as he only went 2-10 from the field and 1-7 from downtown. He only scored 5 points, but did grab 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Martin Sow (8 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists) and Ferdinand Djordic (13 points, 5 rebounds) both had good games down low, but it was not enough. Reynold Gross chipped in 16 points, but only had 2 assists. "We played alright, but not good enough. It's really hard to beat Michigan on their home floor, so I am not too disappointed, but I really wish we could have won," beamed Coach Frizzell.

              Princeton falls to 10-2.

Just one week after entering the top 25 media poll, Princeton is gone because the Tigers lost to Michigan by three points. "It was short and sweet!" joked Coach Frizzell. Princeton falls down one spot in the mid-major top poll to #3.

Princeton Loses Second in a Row

              12/17 @ Vermont

              Final: 62-80

Princeton got off to a bad start and ended on a sour note in this affair. Princeton was down 34-33 at the half and played very poorly in the second half as the Tigers lose their second game in a row after starting the year off 10-1. "We played horribly tonight. We are in a slump and we must emerge from it. I don't know if we were still thinking about last week's loss at Michigan or what, but we need to bounce back and get a win," stated Coach Frizzell. Princeton only shot 1-12 from three point range in the loss. Reynold Gross scored a game-high 19 points, but only had one assist. Wendell Lalugba was only 1-12 from the field as he only scored 3 points. Martin Sow (11 points, 7 rebounds) and Ferdinand Djordic (16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), but the rest of the team was horrid as the Tigers fall again.

              Princeton is now 10-3.

                  Princeton Blows Away Lafayette

                  12/28 @ Lafayette

                  Final: 72-42

Princeton strolled into Lafayette clicking on all cylinders as they went home with an impressive 30 point win after dropping their last two games against Michigan and Vermont. "We really bounced back well and just had a great all around game," explained Coach Frizzell. Princeton forced 22 Lafayette turnovers while only committing 6 of their own. Reynold Gross paced the offense with 6 points and 7 assists. Cedric Tchana (13 points, 4 steals) went 3-5 from downtown while Wendell Lalugba (13 points, 2 steals) and Martin Sow (10 points, 7 rebounds) also played well in the win.

                  Princeton is now 11-3.

Princeton Comes Back to Beat Army

                  12/30 vs. Army

                  Final 77-72

Princeton fell behind early and lef by 10 points with only three minutes remaining. It looked as if the Princeton Tigers might lose to the 5-8 Army Black Knights at home, making it three losses in four games for the Tigers after starting out 10-1. Instead, Wendell Lalugba lit the basket on fire as he came alive in the last three minutes to push the Tigers past Army. Lalugba ended with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Reynold Gross also played well as he tallied the game's only double-double, contributing 17 points, 10 assists, and 4 rebounds to the effort. Martin Sow had a solid game as he totaled 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Coach Frizzell said, "We played a very poor game out there and we are lucky that we were able to pull out a win. This was quite embarrassing and this better not happen next week against Oklahoma or we'll be heading home with a blowout loss."

                  Princeton is now 12-3.

After winning both games the previous week, Princeton remained ranked #2 in the mid-major top 25 poll as they sport a 12-3 record. Nevada still sits atop the poll with a 12-1 record. Nevada is also ranked #22 in the Coaches Poll and #21 in the Media Poll.

                  Buzzer Beater Beats Princeton

                  1/3 @ Oklahoma

                  Final: 65-67

Princeton was behind much of the game as the Tigers played a very poor game, committing careless turnovers, playing sloppy defense, and shooting rather poorly. The Tigers managed to get back ahead with just under two minutes remaining after being behind by 7 at halftime. Wendell Lalugba got a layup with 20 seconds left to put the Tigers up 65-64. However, Oklahoma took the ball up court and found an open man who drained a three pointer as the buzzer sounded to give the 7-5 Oklahoma Sooners their eighth win of the year. "This is a tough loss to take, but we really did not play well at all. We were careless with the basketball and did not play up to our ability," said Coach Frizzell. Wendell Lalugba was the main force for Princeton as he tallied 17 points and 2 steals. Cedric Tchana had a nice game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks while Reynold Gross added 11 points.

Princeton finishes up non-conference play 12-4.

                      1/14 @ Yale

                      Final: 75-42

A balanced, dominating attack led Coach Frizzell to his 99th career win tonight as the Princeton Tigers jumped out to a 39-21 halftime lead and never looked back in a convincing victory against a weak Yale squad on the road. "We played very well tonight," commented Coach Frizzell about his team's performance during their first Ivy League conference game of the season. Wendell Lalugba led all scorers with 18 points. Cedric Tchana pitched in 14 points and 3 assists while Martin Sow (8 points, 7 rebounds), Damien Allen (2 points, 14 rebounds) and Marin Collins (7 points) all pitched in with additional solid performances.

                      Princeton is now 13-4 (1-0).

After going 1-0 the previous week, the Princeton dropped eight spots in the latest mid-major top 25 poll as they land ranked #11 in the latest poll, despite not losing a single game the previous week. Coach Frizzell said, "I didn't think we should have been rated as high as we were, anyways, but I don't know why the pollsters decided to suddenly change their minds. Whatever the case, we'll take it and move on. They're just polls. They mean nothing and we won't worry about them."

                      1/21 vs. Yale

                      Final: 71-52

Coach Frizzell has finally notched win #100 of his young collegiate coaching career as his team beat the Yale bulldogs today 71-52. However, after being beatdown last week against Princeton, Yale came out today with a renewed passion and jumped out to an early 12-5 lead. The Bulldogs would hang around all throughout the first half and played tough, hard-nose defense as Princeton only led 28-25 at halftime. Coach Frizzell rallied his troops at the half and Princeton fortunately pulled away as the Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 43-27 in the second half as the Princeton offense began to click. "Reynold Gross was the reason we won this game," boasted Coach Frizzell about Gross' sensational 28 point, 8 assist performance. He also chipped in 3 steals in the effort and shot 11-13 from the field and 4-4 from downtown. Gross didn't get a whole lot of support from his supporting class as Cedric Tchana only managed 3 points on 1-8 shooting. Wendell Lalugba ended with 10 points, but only went 4-11 from the field. Martin Sow delivered a solid outing, however, as he tallied 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists while Timon Michaud came off the bench to deliver 8 points.

                      Princeton is now 14-4 (2-0).

                      Press Conference

Coach Frizzell held a press conference today to talk about his 100th career win against Yale and how he felt about passing the century mark. "I guess it feels really good. There is nothing particularly special about it as, in reality, it's just another game just like any other. However, it does make you feel good to know that you have 100 wins under your belt now."

Coach Frizzell now holds a career record of 100-41. He also holds a career Ivy League conference record of 48-10.

Coach Frizzell was also asked about how if felt to put the losing skid behind them as they have now won two games in a row. "Well, I feel like we have been playing better, but our last game against Yale was not very good until the second half. I think sometimes we come out very flat and play with absolutely no energy. We need to work on that if we hope to go far in the NCAA Tournament."

Oh, oops. I've watched the TV show a lot, but have never seen it spelled before, so I always assumed it was a C. I will change it momentarily!

Princeton Struggles Early, but Pulls Ahead Late to Beat Brown

                            1/27 vs. Brown

                            Final: 64-49

Brown was the favorite to finish second in the Ivy League behind Princeton before the season started. Brown came in sporting a disappointing 8-7 record and a 1-1 record in conference, but Brown still has what is probably the second most talented team in the conference. They managed to show that early on, jumping out to a 20-13 lead and led Princeton 29-27 with two seconds left in the first half before Wendell Lalugba nailed a buzzer-beater three to put Princeton up 30-29 at halftime. The buzzer-beater gave the Tigers confidence as they outscored the Brown Beats 34-20 in the second half en route to another win. "We didn't play our best basketball out there, but we got it done. Brown did a really good job. You really have to hand it to them considering we have far greater talent in just about every position, yet they still gave us quite a scare at home," said Coach Frizzell. Wendell Lalugba led the way for Princeton with clutch shots as he ended 5-8 from three point range and tallied 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Martin Sow picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Ferdinand Djordic had a nice game with 8 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Reynold Gross paced the offence wit 12 points and 8 assists. The Tigers only got 5 bench points, however, 5 of which were from Timon Michaud. The bench needs to provide more depth if this team hopes to go deep into March.

                            Princeton is now 15-4 (3-0).

                            Princeton Demolishes Penn

                            1/28 vs. Penn

                            Final: 70-35

This rivarly game has been very one-sided since Coach Frizzell came along and it stayed that way today as the Princeton Tigers used a smothering defense to hold Penn to 24% shooting. "We played great defense and that is something we have done extremely well thus far this year," commented Coach Frizzell. Wendell Lalugba was the leading scorer in the blowout as he tallied 15 points and 2 steals. Cedric Tchana (13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Martin Sow (11 points, 6 rebounds), and Reynold Gross (8 points, 5 assists) all had nice games as well. Marin Collins came off the bench to deliver 13 points and went 2-3 from long range.

                            Princeton is now 16-4 (4-0).

After going 2-0 the previous week and winning their first four conference games, the Princeton Tigers dropped two spots from their previous spot in the mid-major top 25 poll. The Tigers are now ranked 12th. Coach Frizzell said about the ranking, "I really don't have any idea why we dropped. We're not playing anyone great, but neither are most of these other mid-major teams as conference play has set in. Don't worry, though, we'll be back in the top five by season's end." Princeton's RPI ranking improved eight spots to 63rd as well.

                              Dartmouth Shocks Princeton

                              2/3 vs. Dartmouth

                              Final: 51-69

Dartmouth would provide Princeton's first tough opponent of Ivy League Conference play as they came in sporting an 11-6 record. Princeton came out shell-shocked as Dartmouth ran all over the Tigers early on to seize a 7-0 lead. Dartmouth would retain the lead for the rest of the half and led 30-26 at halftime. Dartmouth ran away with it in the second half as they outscored Princeton 39-25 in a shocking 18 point victory over Princeton at the Jadwin Gym. This marks Princeton's first home loss this year. Princeton found it nearly impossible to score the entire game and only shot 34% from the field as a result. "It seemed like there was a lid on the rim. We couldn't hit the broad side of a barn today and it showed up on the scoreboard and resulted in a loss for us," said Coach Frizzell. Wendell Lalugba (15 points, 4 rebounds) and Timon Michaud (13 points) were the only Tigers to get into double-digit scoring in the game. Reynold Gross only went 1-5 from three as he struggled. Cedric Tchana struggled as well, only shooting 1-9 while Martin Sow was held to two points and did not make a single field goal as he shot a startling 0-11 from the floor.

                              Princeton is now 16-5 (4-1).

                              Princeton Bounces Back

                              2/4 vs. Cornell

                              Final: 83-64

Cornell made the first two baskets of the game and led 10-5 early on as the Jadwin Gym grew weary of another game like the Dartmouth loss. Princeton only led by 4 at halftime as the Tigers led 36-32. Luckily, Princeton emerged in the second half and began shooting lights out en route to an 83-64 victory. Still, the backups were not able to come in as Princeton never got a big enough lead until very late in the game. "We certainly did not play our best, but at least we still won. We really need to get our act together, however, as we cannot continue to play like this if we hope to win the Ivy League," commented Coach Frizzell. Reynold Gross (21 points, 6 assists) and Wendell Lalugba (25 points) both had marvelous games. Martin Sow bounced back from his 2 point debacle last week to score 25 points, two points off of his career-high of 27 points. Sow also tallied 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals as he had an all-around great game. Timon Michaud also came off the bench to deliver a couple of key threes early in the second half and ended with 8 points.

                              Princeton is now 17-5 (5-1).
