Princeton Blows Out Dartmouth to Close out the Regular Season

    3/8 @ Dartmouth

    Final: 78-51

With the Ivy League Title already in the bag, this game was meaningless in the grand scheme of things other than for NCAA tournament seeding purposes. Nonetheless, the Princeton Tigers rolled over Dartmouth in a 27 point blowout to close out the regular season. "We played yet another good defensive game and I can't wait for the NCAA Tournament to begin to see how we stack up against the best of the best," beamed Coach Frizzell after the blowout. Timon Michaud came off the bench to deliver huge points for the Tigers. He tallied 17 points and shot 3-6 from three point range, which is big considering he was only shooting 1-13 from downtown on the season coming into tonight's game. Wendell Lalugba tallied 9 points while Cedric Tchana drilled 4 threes to tally 16 points and 3 assists. Renardo Rodriguez also contributed 12 points and 3 assists while Ferdinand Djordic had a solid game down low as he totaled 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Princeton closes out the regular season with at 22-7 (13-1).

    Selection Sunday

Coach Frizzell gathered his team together to watch CBS as the unveiling of the 2011 NCAA Tournament brackets were announced. The Princeton Tigers were rewarded for their strong play as they were given a #8 seed, the highest seed in Coach Frizzell's tenure as head coach. Last year Princeton earned a #9 seed and the 2 years ago Princeton got a #12 seed. Princeton will face the Florida Gators (21-10) who got a #9 seed. However, the Gators are a very strong team. Florida was ranked #17 in the latest top 25 coaches poll, but was unranked in the media poll. If Princeton manages to beat Florida then the #1 seeded Pittsburgh Panthers (30-4) will be waiting in their grasps to take on the Tigers in the second round barring an upset by Boston University (16-15). The first 2 rounds will be played at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. "I am very pleased with our seeding and I can't wait to get out there and play!" exclaimed Coach Frizzell.

Comeback Falls Short, Tigers Lose to Gators by 10

3/18 vs. #9 seed Florida Gators

      NCAA Tournament - 1st Round

      Final: 74-84

84% of the nation on the ESPN Nationwide poll picked the Florida Gators to win this game. Princeton may have been the higher seeded team, but they certainly weren't the most talented. "We did not match up well at all with the Gators," explained Coach Frizzell. The Gators did not have a starter under 6'6. Their point guard, Nick Calathes, was even 6'7. Their 2 big men were 6'10 and 7'3. Meanwhile, Princeton did not have a starter over 6'8. It showed as Princeton could not drive to the basket or have any sort of outside game. The shots weren't falling from beyond the arc, either, as Princeton only shot 10-33 in the first half which equates to 30%. Meanwhile, Florida shot a stunning 73%. The scoreboard reflected the vast difference in shooting percentages as the Gators led 54-29 at halftime. However, Princeton's shots started falling in the second half as the Tigers heated up from beyond the arc. Princeton shot 6-10 from three and 55% overall in the second half while holding the Gators to 38% shooting. This allowed Princeton to go on a huge run to close within 6 points with 4 minutes left. However, Florida's head coach, Billy Donavan, would wake up his team as the Gators would preserve a 10 point victory to move on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Cedric Tchana continued his hot shooting for the Tigers in the loss as he went 5-9 from downtown and collected 19 points. Renardo Rodriguez tallied 11 points and 3 assists. while Wendell Lalugba had a nice game, tallying 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Martin Sow had a good second half down low as he totaled 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists to close out his junior year.

Princeton finishes the season at 22-8 (13-1).

      Press Conference

After finishing the season 22-8 (13-1) and losing to #9 seeded Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Coach Frizzell talked about how he felt about the year overall. "Well, of course I wish we could have advanced in the Big Dance, but overall we have a fine year. We dominated the Ivy League conference, which was our first priority, and had some key wins like the win over Maryland, who was ranked #2 at the time. We played very well in the conference schedule and we bring back everyone except Korrel Gomez, so we should be able to play even better next season!"
      -------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Princeton Senior News

Princeton loses only one player to graduation this offseason in Korrel Gomez. Gomez joined the team as a walk-on in his sophomore year and has played good enough to make the team all three years. "Korrel was never much of a contributor, but he worked hard and made the team every year and I am proud of him for that," commented Coach Frizzell. Gomez owns career averages of 1.7 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game. Hie career-highs are 9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.

        Recruiting News

Coach Frizzell was hard on the recruiting trail this summer. He has 4 scholarships available for this recruiting class, so he would sure like to use them. Lee Williamson of 2khoops.com reports, "Coach Frizzell has a 5 star recruit targeted in Wesley French. French is an All-American and was Mr. Basketball of the state of Maryland. I don't like the chances of the Tigers getting him, but we'll see. Coach Frizzell also has two 4 star recruits targeted in Cassiand Swift and Chado Kirkland. I really don't like the chances of the Tigers getting those 2 either, but like I said with French, we'll wait and see how it goes. Coach Frizzell also has his eyes set on several 3 star prospects and I think the chances are that he'll get a few of those."

        1. Wesley French 6'0 199 (Baltimore, MD - #14 overall, #6 PG) 5*, All-American, Mr. Basketball
        2. Chado Kirkland 6'5 210 (Pontiac, MI - #86 overall, #16 SF) 4*
        3. Cassiand Swift 7'0 254 (Moreno Valley, CA - #31 overall, #1 C) 4*

        The Replacements

Princeton lost only one senior to graduation in Korrell Gomez and look to be ready to make a statement this year as this team is certainly experienced. Only one recruit made his way to Princeton this offseason in Tremmell Christensen, but he will redshirt this season. Christensen is a good shooter and should be good next year as a backup for Cedric Tchana.

However, possibly the best player in the Tigers' recent memory will don a Princeton uniform this season. That player is Reynold Gross, the point guard who transferred this past season from UCLA. Gross did not use a year of eligibility when he sat out in his transfer year, so it was essentially the same as a redshirt as the Tigers will get him for 2 full years. Gross will be an integral part of the offense this year and he should make an immediate impact. He has the ability to shoot lights-out from three point range, can drive, and can pass the basketball. He will almost certainly be on the All-Ivy League team at the end of this year.

Alright guys, I am going out of town tomorrow for a few weeks. I think I am going to go ahead stop here between seasons because I think it is a good stopping point to pick back up when a return. So...this is not dead even though it will be idle for a few weeks!

I actually was playing the Akron game about an hour ago and was up 40-29 when the power went out, so the game was cut off. I think it killed my desire to play the game anymore tonight, LOL!

I'll still be cruising the forums some, though, since I am bringing my laptop and will have internet access.

              Princeton Squeaks Past Akron

              11/6 @ Akron

              Final: 62-58

Princeton won it's first game of the season today against the Akron Zips. Both teams are viewed as two of the top mid-major teams in the nation and fought hard. "I felt we were a little rusty out there," commented Coach Frizzell about his team's somewhat sloppy performance. "We only shot 38%, but we were able to get it done anyways. We maintained ball control and forced them into numerous turnovers, so we were able to win the game despite our poor shooting percentage." Princeton turned the ball over only 6 times while forcing the Zips into 16 turnovers. Wendell Lalugba must have knew this team needed an explosive performance by him in this game as he was sensational in the second half and ended with 21 points and 3 rebounds. In his first game in a Princeton uniform, Reynold Gross was fantastic as he tallied 18 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals which were instrumental in the close win. The Tigers struggled down low, however, as Martin Sow and Ferdinand Drodic combined for only 7 points and went a combined 2-11 from the field.

Princeton starts the season off 1-0.

Gross Leads Princeton Past Golden Gophers

              11/6 @ Minnesota

              Final: 81-76

Reynold Gross followed up his solid performance in his first game with another great game as he scored a career-high 30 points in the game to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. "He is a remarkable player. He reminds me of Steve Nash a bit. He even looks like him with his white skin, long hair, and relatively small stature," joked Coach Frizzell. The Tigers also got nice performances from Martin Sow (17 points, 9 rebounds) and Ferdinand Djordic (11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals) after their poor performances in the first game of the season against Akron. Wendell Lalugba had a tough game in the first half, but stepped it up late in the game when the team needed points as he ended with 8 points. Princeton also got to the free throw line seemingly at will in this game as they went 27-37 from the charity stripe. "We have a team that can easily slash and drive to the basket," commented Coach Frizzell, "and we plan on utilizing that talent this year."

              Princeton is now 2-0.

You've got a terrific record for such a short time at PU. Tough luck against the Gators at Big Dance. I'm pretty sure that you will bring the Tigers back for another go during this season. Back-to-Back road games against WVU and "Big Blue" should be a good test for your squad.

Yeah, I was hoping to get to the second round, but the Gators were a tough draw for me as they were rated in the upper 80s.

I have a feeling that I may be able to take one of those two big road games as I am only a few rating points lower than either of them. I could win both or lose both as well. It will be a tough test for this team to see where we stand.

Strong Second Half Leads Princeton Past Richmond

                    11/9 vs. Richmond

                    Final: 80-57

The Jadwin Gym was rocking as Princeton played it's home opener on a cold Wednesday night in early November against the Richmond Spiders, one of the better mid-major teams in the nation. The game was back and forth in the first half as Princeton went to the locker room holding a 30-28 advantage over the Spiders. However, Princeton came alive in the second half as they outscored the Spiders 50-29 to blow out Richmond by 23 points. Reynold Gross had another phenomenal game tonight as he recorded his first career double-double, tallying 13 points and 12 assists. "Reynold (Gross) is a fantastic basketball player. He is an excellent passer and helps all his teammates get open looks and runs the offense to perfection. Having him on this team makes us that much better," boasted Coach Frizzell. Wendell Lalugba ended with 18 points and 3 rebounds while Martin Sow had another good game down low as he had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Cedric Tchana had a breakout game as he scored a season-high 14 points and shot 4-6 from downtown.

                    Princeton is now 3-0.

                    Mid-Major Top 5 News

Today, the first mid-major top 25 poll of the season was released and Princeton came in ranked #3. I think it is phenomenal how far we have came in such a short time to be ranked this high," commented Coach Frizzell about the ranking. This is the highest the Tigers have ever been ranked in the poll. Below is the top 5:

                    1. Gonzaga (2-1)
                    2. Butler (1-0)
                    3. Princeton (3-0)
                    4. Nevada (3-0)
                    5. North Texas (2-0)

                    Press Conference

Coach Frizzell held a press conference today to discuss how he feels about this season now that his team has played 3 games. "I feel great to be honest. I think this team is capable of knocking off any team in the nation. I'm not saying we're going to win the National Championship or anything, but I honestly think anything less than a Sweet 16 would be a major disappointment because we have a heck of a lot of talent on this team. We have senior leadership, good young talent, and good bench players. We have everything you need for a great team."

Coach Frizzell was also asked about the possibility of his team going undefeated in conference play after barely missing that mark with a 13-1 mark last season. "We are definitely aiming for that. The main thing is to win the conference and that is what we are aiming for, but this team is far and away more talented than any other team in the Ivy League, so we should be able to get it done if we don't lose focus. That is certainly a goal of ours."

Great Alaska Shootout - 1st Round

                      Final: 71-49

Princeton got off to a great start in the Great Alaska shootout today in Anchorage, Alaska as the Tigers easily defeated the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders by 22 points. "Our defense played very well and our offense was quite efficient," explained Coach Frizzell about why his team won so handily. Cedric Tchana had his coming out party for this season as he tallied 18 points on 6-9 shooting from three point range. Wendell Lalugba collected 13 points while Reynold Gross just missed a double-double as he totaled 12 points and 9 assists. The Blue Raiders will take on #12 Texas Tech in two days in the second round of the Great Alaska Shootout.

                      Princeton is now 4-0.

Great Alaska Shootout - 2nd Round

                      Final: 77-78

Both Texas Tech and Princeton came into this game with perfect records as both stood at 4-0 coming into the game. "We knew this was going to be a tough game and we played well. We just couldn't get it done in the clutch," beamed Coach Frizzell after his team made a crucial mistake which cost them the game. Both teams played a tight game and the score was tied at 41 at halftime. However, in the second half Princeton built an 8 point lead and with 3 minutes left, led by 6. That lead would evaporate as the Tigers found themselves down by 2 with 50 seconds left. Reynold Gross drove towards the basket and kicked the ball out to Cedric Tchana for an open three which he promptly drained to put the Tigers up by 1 with 45 seconds remaining. Texas Tech scored on their next possession and the Tigers found themselves down one point with one last chance. Reynold Gross was about to set up a pick-and-roll with 8 seconds left when he was called for a 5 seconds closely guarded violation and turned the ball over the the Red Raiders who ran the clock out for the one point win. "I feel bad about what I did. I wasn't paying attention to the fact that I was so close to my defender and it ultimately cost us the game," said a softspoken Reynold Gross. Coach Frizzell was floored by the call, but to no avail, as the Tigers lost their first game of the year to the Red Raiders and fall to 4-1. Reynold Gross still had a good game as he collected 18 points and 4 assists, but he did turn the ball over a bit more than Coach Frizzell would like. Wendell Lalugba tallied 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists while Ferdinand Djordic had a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Cedric Tchana also contributed 10 points and 5 rebounds in the losing effort. The Prineton Tigers will take on Northern Arizona in the third place game of thr Great Alaska Shootout tomorrow. Northern Arizona shocked #1 North Carolina in the first round of the tournament before losing in the second round.

                      Princeton is now 4-1.

                      Final: 81-49

"We would have liked to be playing in the championship game right now, but we aren't and we made the best of it. We were sloppy early as I think we were still reeling from yesterday's close loss to Texas Tech, but we got it rolling and crushed Northern Arizona," commented Coach Frizzell. The game was tied at 20 late in the second half before Princeton stormed out on a 14-2 run to end the half to make the score 34-22 at halftime. The Tigers continued to roll in the second half to grab the easy victory over a solid Northern Arizona squad which defeated #1 North Carolina in the first round. Reynold Gross paced the offense with 14 points and 5 assists on 5-7 shooting. Meanwhile, Wendell Lalugba had a nice game with 18 points and 3 rebounds while Martin Sow contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds down low. However, Lalugba was only 1-6 from the foul line and as a team the Tigers were only 9-18. Timon Michaud had a great game off the bench as he contributed 15 points in the win. Damien Allen came off the bench and did not contribute a single point. However, he grabbed 15 rebounds for the Tigers, a career-high for him.

                      Princeton is now 5-1.

Yeah, it was a very tough way to lose. I have that happen every now and then when I am waiting on the pick and he takes forever to set the pick while I stand there waiting and get called for the violation. It just happened at the worst time possible unfortunately...

                              Final: 78-35

"We played a great game on the defensive side of the ball," beamed Coach Frizzell. That was very true as Monmouth was held to under 30% shooting and a season-low 35 points. Monmouth only scored a mere 14 points in the first half. Reynold Gross led the way with another double-double as he tallied 14 points and 11 assists. Martin Sow also had a double-double. Sow totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds. Timon Michaud came off the bench to contribute 11 points and 4 rebounds in the 43 point blowout.

                              Princeton is now 6-1.

Princeton Plays Poorly, but Still Finds a Way to Win

                              11/26 vs. Cal Poly

                              Final: 67-56

Princeton got off to a horrific start and played very poorly for the entire game, but still somehow escaped with a win. Princeton got plenty of open threes in the first half, but only went 3-18 from beyond the and the Tigers found themselves down 32-28 at the half. The fans at the Jadwin Gym were getting nervous as they were afraid the home team would lose their first game of the season at home to the Mustangs. Coach Frizzell gave a fiery halftime speech and made some changes to get the ball down to Martin Sow down low. Sow only had 3 points at halftime, but ended with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists as he scored 19 second half points. Reynold Gross was horrible shooting the ball, but found other ways to contribute by tallying 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 10 assists. Wendell Lalugba (17 points, 6 rebounds) and Ferdinand Djordic (10 points, 10 rebounds) both made valuable contributions in the win as well. Princeton ended the game 5-29 from downtown, something they will certainly not want to repeat. Reynold Gross was 1-5 from three, Cedric Tchana was 0-7, and Wendell Lalugba was 3-11 as most of the team struggled shooting the long ball. "We played very, very poorly, but we still won and I think that is a sign of a great team, to be able to win even when playing poorly," said Coach Frizzell.

                              Princeton is now 7-1.

                                Final: 78-43

Princeton blew out a very weak Wagner team by 35 points in this one. Princeton had no trouble whatsoever in this game, jumping out to a 40-17 halftime lead and cruising to another easy victory. "We played great from the tipoff to the final buzzer. I was able to rest the starters in the second half and give the backups some hard earned playing time," said Coach Frizzell after the game. Princeton was led by Cedric Tchana (20 points, 3 assists) and Wendell Lalugba (20 points, 7 rebounds) who both went 4-4 from behind the arc. Martin Sow chipped in with 8 points and 7 rebounds while Reynold Gross tallied 6 points and 7 assists.

                                Albany No Match For Tigers

                                12/1 vs. Albany

                                Final: 69-41

Princeton played spectacular defense in this one once again. The Tigers' offense was not as potent as usual, but their defense was top caliber as it usually has been this year. "We have been playing spectacular defense this year. Anytime you can hold a team below 50 points, you're doing a magnificent job. Heck, any time you can hold your opponent below 60, you're almost always going to win!" exlaimed Coach Frizzell. Reynold Gross paced the offense with 8 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Wendell Lalugba dominated with 19 points and 4 rebounds while Timon Michaud came off the bench to deliver 10 points and 5 rebounds.
