Bennett Leads The Way As The T-Wolves Down The Grizzlies

Recap | Box Score | Highlights

MVP: Anthony Bennett. Seems like the rookie gets it everytime the Wolves win. Bennett finished with a game high 36 points and added 16 rebounds and 5 assist to his impressive stat line. He went toe to toe with Z-Bo all night in a great battle of power forwards.

LVP: Mike Conley. Conley had a nice stat line of 15 points and 9 assist but his impact wasn't felt at all out there on the court. A majority of his assist came from him dribbling the ball until late in the clock and dishing it off with little time left.

X-Factor: Dion Waiters. Waiters took a back seat in the scoring tonight and focused on having a better all around game finishing with 14 points, 5 assist, and 2 steals in 31 minutes. He also was able to have a nice shooting night even with Tony Allen hounding him on defense.

Rookie Watch: Shabazz Muhammad. Muhammad had another effective night coming off the pine scoring 13 points in only 10 minutes.

Minnesota -- The 2013-2014 season has come to an end for the Minnesota Timberwolves. After trading star player Kevin Love at the start of the season, many wxpected the Wolves to be the laughing stock of the NBA. But the T-Wolves avoided having the worse record in the league and finished with season with 32-50 with a pretty young team. Their starting five was especially young with 27 year old Luc Mbah A Moute being the oldest player in the starting lineup.

With their young guns getting experience this season and being a year older, the Timberwolves could see themselves in the playoffs next season. So maybe they did make the right move in moving Love as soon as they could. In return they got a 20+ scorer in Dion Waiters, a walking double double in Anthony Bennett, a 1st round pick, and a trading chip in Anderson Varejao.

With three first rounders in the upcoming draft, the future is looking bright in Minnesota.

                          Hornacek Named New T-Wolves Coach

Minneapolis, MN. -- Today the Minnesota Timberwolves introduced Jeff Hornacek as their new head coach after not bringing back Rick Adelman. Hornachek and the team came to terms on a 3-year $10.65M deal that would make him the 11th coach in team history. The team shocked that Hornachek was available after he was shockingly fired by the Phoenix Suns after leading them to a 46-36 and their first playoff appearance since the 2009-2012 season.

"Their loss is out gain, said GM Tennell Williams. I would like to personally thank the Phoenix Suns organization for giving us our new head coach."

At the presser, Hornachek said the team has all the pieces to be a playoff team but their youth was their downfall this past season.

"I think the oldest guy on the team was Andy (Varejao) and he's only like 31. I expect us to be in the playoffs for years to come."

The team also did a overhaul on the rest of the coaching staff and in the front office. Below are the rest of the moves that were made by the team.

                              Timberwolves Acquire Watson

Minneapolis, MN. -- With only 24 hours before the 2014 NBA draft, the Minnesota and Indiana Pacers have completed a player for player swap. The Timberwolves will send Shabazz Muhammad to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for C.J. Watson. With a very young squad, Wolves GM Tennell Williams felt that his need would need veterans if they want to make a playoff run next season. After acquiring Reggie Bullock from the Clippers, the T-Wolves felt Muhammad would be expendable.

In 81 games with the Pacers last season, Watson averaged 6.1 ppg and 3.1 apg while sooting 46% from the field and 40% from behind the arc.

With Watson taking over the backup point duties, expect to Wolves to try to trade Lorenzo Brown on on or before draft night.

                                Team Overview
                                2013-14 Record: 32-50
Draft Picks: 3rd, 7th (via MIL), 26th (via CLE), 35th (via UTA), 59th (via LAC)

                                Under Contract
                                G: Ricky Rubio
                                G: Dion Waiters
                                F: Anthony Bennett
                                G: C.J. Watson
                                C: Gorgui DIeng
                                G: Lorenzo Brown
                                F: Reggie Bullock
                                F: Luc Mbah A Moute

                                Free Agents
                                C: Anderson Varejao
                                F: Erik Murphy
                                G: Jimmer Fredette

                                Areas of Strength
The Timberwolves have their core players at the point with Rubio, at the two guard with Waiter, and at power forward with Bennett. The front office is very high on Gorgui Dieng who could become a defensive player of the year candidate down the road. Rubio had his best year as a pro after leading the league in assist with 10.5 apg. Waiters showed off his scoring abilities by upping his average from 14.7 to 24.1 with an increased role in the offense. And Bennett showed the league why he was selected with the number one pick with a impressive rookie season.

                                Needs work
The main weakness of the team was youth and the lack of bench production. Another major problem was the low production from the small forward spot. Corey Brewer wasn't the answer as he was shipped off the the Los Angeles Clippers. Mbah A Moute is a nice role player but not starting material. And he also will miss the start of he season after tearing his MCL.

                                The way to go
Holding the 3rd, 7th, 26th, 35th, and 59th picks, the T-Wolves could do a lot of wheeling and dealing on draft night. Their also pretty much guaranteed the one of the top three prospects in the draft. But will Wiggins and Parker be gone by their first pick?

                                Best Fit
                                Andrew Wiggins, SF, Kansas
                                Jabari Parker, SF, Duke
