Monday, September 18th, 1905: Player of the Week Trophy to Davis
A battle-tested George Davis declared war on opposing pitchers last week, attacking the ball like the well-schooled veteran he is. Today the 35-year-old Chicago shortstop collected the American League Player of the Week Award.

He wrapped up the week with a .591 average, 13 hits in 22 at-bats, no home runs, 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

For 1905 Davis is batting .314 with 2 home runs, 63 RBIs and 72 runs scored

Monday, September 18th, 1905: NL Player of the Week Picked
Last week when the New York skipper penciled in "Hooks Wiltse" on the lineup card, it was a good sign. He delivered a 2-0 record and a 1.00 ERA and was voted the National League Player of the Week.

In 13 starts this year Wiltse has fashioned a 15-4 record and a 2.14 ERA.

A's Defeat Highlanders On Late Blast By Davis!

Hilltop Park,NY,NY-Starting pitchers Chief Bender and Jack Chesboro were both at their best today as the teams took a 1-1 tie into the 8th inning where A's slugger Harry Davis broke the game open with a wind aided 3 run homer giving Philadelphia a hard fought 4-2 victory.Entering the second inning still scoreless, the Athletics got the first run of the game on a Bris Lord RBI single, the Highlanders came right back in their half though, tying the game on a Kid Elberfeld ground ball to second. From there, neither team could get anything going until the 8th where A's CF Danny Hoffman's one out double energized the Philadelphia bench.Following a Topsy Hartsel intentional walk and a Lave Cross fly out to left,Harry Davis,to the chagrin of the New York faithful, blasted a 3 run home run to right giving the Athletics a 4-1 lead. The Highlanders got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a Frank LaPorte sacrifice fly but it wasn't enough and Philadelphia extended their winning streak to 8 games while keeping pace with Chicago who also won today by the score of 3-2.Here's the box score.

Waddell Wins 9th Straight For League Leading 23rd Victory
Hilltop Park,NY,NY-Once again, the White Elephants jumped on the back of the man on the hill and rode him straight to victory as Rube Waddell(23-12) outdueled Highlander starter Al Orth(11-19) in the Philadelphia 2-1 victory. With the game still scoreless in the top of the 7th,Harry Davis led off with a single to center and then advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt. With a base now open, the New Yorkers decided to intentionally walk RBI machine Danny Murphy and take their chances with Monte Cross.Monte made them pay however with an RBI single to right, following that, catcher Tom Needham grounded into a run scoring fielder's choice and just like that it was 2-0 Athletics.Waddell continued to cruise until with two outs in the 9th he lost concentration and walked two straight batters and allowed an RBI single to Rube Oldring before regaining his composure and getting a game ending ground out from Doc Casey .Here's the box score

Hilltop Park,NY,NY-A's starter Eddie Plank just didn't have it today,as the Highlanders used a 6 run first inning to easily defeat the Athletics 8-3 snapping their win streak at 9.New York's Wee Willie Keeler was just fantastic, going 3 for 4 with a home run,4 RBI and 2 runs scored giving the Highlanders all they would need offensively while starting pitcher Jake Powell did the rest, allowing just 6 hits and 3 runs(1 earned) in the complete game victory. With the loss, the A's are now 3 games behind first place Chicago with just 15 to play. Here's the box score.

So far this season Gibson has a record of 14-5 with 59 strikeouts and 45 walks in 166 innings and a 2.17 ERA.

Friday, September 22nd, 1905: Cubs Just a half game back!
Thanks to two home runs by Frank Schulte, the Chicago Cubs defeated the New York Giants 8-4 moving them just one half game behind first place New York.Chicago starter Jake Weimer was credited with the win,his 22nd.

Friday, September 22nd, 1905: Howell Fashions Shutout Against Boston
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," the Browns manager told reporters after today's game.

The Americans ran into a buzzsaw as Harry Howell cut them down to size 2-0 with a 4-hit shutout.

His skipper added, "He knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."

In the complete game whitewash the St. Louis hurler doled out 1 walk and registered 3 strikeouts.

In the postgame press conference his catcher said, "Harry goes out there and just goes about his business. I don't think he gets too concerned about what's going on. You can call any pitch and you know where he's going to be."

Howell also got some praise from the Boston manager.

"He really kept us in check today. Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away... we took some pathetic swings."

                In 1905 Howell has compiled a 12-20 mark with a 2.53 ERA.

Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Athletics starting pitcher Eddie Plank had everything working today as he held the Detroit Tigers to just one first inning single before shutting the door on the Tigers who didn't have a base runner from the 2nd inning on as the Athletics cruised to victory 3-1.Early on things didn't look so promising for Plank who in the top of the first inning allowed a one out walk to Duff Cooley that was followed by a Sam Crawford base hit giving Detroit 1st and 2nd with one out.The Tigers then pulled of a double steal, setting up Lew Drill's ground out RBI that gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead.Following a scoreless first inning by the A's,Detroit went strike out,Hit By Pitch, strike out,Caught stealing and that was it.From there Plank retired 21 straight as his teammates scored runs in the 2nd,3rd and 6th on RBI singles by Plank and Lave Cross and a sac fly by Tom Needham for a 3-1 Philadelphia victory. On a side note,A's left fielder Topsy Hartsel had his teeth knocked out in a collision at second base and had to be removed from the game,he's day to day. Here's the box score.

Tuesday, September 26th, 1905: Coakley Puts Spell on Detroit
An efficient outing for Andy Coakley usually means a win for Philadelphia. Today was no exception, as the 22-year-old starter held Detroit to a long line of goose eggs. He struck out 6 and gave up 5 hits in the 2-0 shutout.Offensively,John Knight's 2 run homer in the bottom of the first inning provided all of the game's scoring, thanks to an excellent performance by Detroit starter "Honest John" Eubank who pitched well despite the loss.As for Coakley, his record now improves to 17-10 with a 1.98 ERA.Here's the box score.

Comeback In 12th Saves Season For Athletics
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a game that was entirely too close for comfort, the Philadelphia Athletics rallied from two runs down in the 7th to force extra innings and then down a run in the 12th thanks to a Patsy Dougherty home run,the A's got three straight one out singles with Harry Davis getting the final one to score Danny Murphy to give the A's the 4-3 victory which saves the season for yet another day.Starting tomorrow though, the A's start a 3 game series with the first place White Sox who lead Philadelphia by three games with just 9 remaining. The Athletics must take at least two of three just to have a chance over the final week of the season. Here's today's box score.

Chicago Proves To Be Too Much As Athletics Fall 5-3 Severely Damaging Series Hopes
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-In a wildly entertaining game, the Chicago White Sox proved to be too much for the valiant Athletics who fought hard but came up short 5-3.A's second baseman Danny Murpy did all that he could to will a victory, going 2 for 4 with a home run and all 3 RBI but the Sox always had an answer, with the final ones coming in the 8th where with the game tied at 3,Nixey Callahan slapped a two run single to right scoring Frank "The Philly killer" Isbell and George Rohe for the final runs of the game. With the victory, the Sox have now moved to 4 games ahead of the A's with just 8 left to play dropping their magic number to 5.Here's the box score.

Plank Blanks Chicago 4-0 Setting Up Monumental Rubber Match
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Following today's fantastic performance by Eddie Plank in which he held the big hitting White Sox to a mere 6 hits and 0 runs in Philadelphia's 4-0 victory, game three set up to be the most pivital game of the season for both teams as a win for Chicago would all but wrap things up as they would be up 4 with 6 to play, but a win by Philadelphia and the A's are down only two which keeps them in striking distance should Chicago falter in the last week of the season. In this afternoons game,Harry Davis had a huge 2 run homer in the bottom of the 6th that turned a 1-0 into a 3-0 game and all but ended it right there with the way Plank was pitching. As for Plank, his record now improves to 22-11 with a 1.81 ERA while Chicago starter Nick Altrock falls to 22-11 with a 2.07 ERA.Here's the box score.
