Giants Burke Hit With Two Game Suspension

The New York Giants were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's loss to Philadelphia at Polo Grounds III. One in particular -- Frank Burke. Upon being called out on strikes, the Giants left fielder gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.

But the disgruntled Burke lingered on the field for another five minutes berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.

But it got worse after the game, when Burke told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in braille, so he can follow along."

For all of his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Burke for 2 games.

                  Let's Play Ball!!!

Phila,Pa-Its been 6 long months since the Athletics fell short of their goal of winning the AL pennant and going to the World Series, and during that time, the A's retooled by adding some youth as well as a little more speed and defense to go with their already championship caliber pitching staff and they're going to need every bit of it as the league is expected to be highly competitive once again with the World Champion White Sox leading the way followed closely behind by the Highlanders,Naps,Browns and of course our Athletics. And although the Americans,Tigers, and Senators seem to be outgunned, you just never know....As far as expectations,A's Owner Ben Shibe has already stated what he expects, nothing less than a World Championship,"this team has been building towards this for a few years now " said Mr. Shibe, "There's no reason why we can't take down Chicago and win the series if we stay healthy" as for manager Connie Mack,he relishes the challenge laid down by his owner."I thought we would win it last year quite frankly, but losing Socks like we did really hurt us come September,we really needed his bat late in some of those games".True as it is that losing Socks Seybold last year really hurt the team, one gets the impression that excuses won't do this year, they should hang a banner in Columbia Park that says, World Series Or Bust!.Ok I've talked enough, without further adieu, your 1906 Philadelphia Athletics!!!!!

Athletics Blow 4 Run 9th Inning Lead Then Lose In 10th 5-4

American League Park,Washington DC.-In what hopefully was just a matter of "working out the kinks",the A's behind the masterful pitching of Rube Waddell took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th where poor relief pitching together with poor fielding added up to a 5-4 Philadelphia loss on opening day.Following a strikeout to start the 9th,a fatigued Waddell allowed two straight singles before leaving the game for rookie reliever Mike Cunningham who walked the first batter he faced loading the bases before getting Shag Shaughnessy to ground to third where new third baseman Rube Oldring threw wide to first, pulling Harry Davis off the bag allowing a run to score with the runners safe all around.Veteran reliever Weldon Henley then entered the game and misplayed a sure double play ball allowing another run to score again without getting anybody out.Henley then walked in a run before getting a Denny Sullivan RBI ground out that tied the game. Finally Henley struck out Otis Clymer to end the inning. In the 10th following a 1-2-3 top half, the A's Andy Coakley entered the game is his new relief role and promptly walked the first batter he faced, got a ground out advancing the runner, then gave up a game winning RBI triple to Rabbit Nill putting the A's out of their misery 5-4.For a team with the highest payroll in baseball, this is not going to do.Here's the box score.

The Brooklyn Superbas met their match today in New York hurler Christy Mathewson. He kept them guessing the whole game and spun a 3-hit shutout.

"He just worked us over," the Brooklyn skipper said. "He probably didn't even take a shower after the game. I don't think he even worked up a sweat. They could probably pitch him again tomorrow."

In the 7-0 victory Mathewson whiffed 6 and gave up 3 walks.

Coombs Struggles As Athletics Fall 8-1
Columbia Park,Phila,Pa.-Was it too much to ask? Thats the question that was going around Columbia Park today following "Colby Jack" Coombs' implosion in his first Major League start which happened to be in the Athletics home opener.Coombs allowed 4 hits ,4 walks, and 6 runs(2 earned) in just three and a third innings before being lifted for Jimmy Dygert who also had a hard time with the Senators who by this time were smelling blood. It took the solid pitching of veteran Andy Coakley to settle thing down but by that time the game was all but over and the A's were just playing for pride.Besides Coakley,Eddie Collins was the lone bright spot on a dismal afternoon, the rookie once again played wonderfully going 2 for 3 with a walk and run scored.Collins is now batting .471 after four games with a ridiculous .526 OBP One really has to wonder about the future of Monte Cross right now, because there's no way you can leave this kid on the bench.Thats for a later time though,Cross will be out for at least another two weeks so in the meantime just enjoy watching this kid blossom. Here's today's box score.
