Mountaineers top Bulls in Morgantown 35-7
Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 17th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (7-0, 3-0 Big East) continued their undefeated season tonight in primetime with a 35-7 victory over the 21st-ranked South Florida Bulls (4-1, 1-1 Big East), the Bulls fresh off a devastating 56-14 blowout loss at home to undefeated Pittsburgh.
Even without Noel Devine, the offense did enough and the defense was stout, as usual, allowing only one touchdown and 265 offensive yards to the Bulls of South Florida.
The icing on the cake came with 5:56 left in the fourth quarter when defensive end stepped in front of a B.J. Daniels screen pass and picked it off. The big 'ole d-lineman took it all the way back 55 yards for a touchdown, breaking two tackles on the way to the score. That made it 28-7 and essentially put the game out of reach of the Bulls.
"That was a huge play," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "That just signified the way our great defense played today. Our defense scored one touchdown and they only allowed one touchdown for the Bulls, meaning the defense essentially shut the Bulls out. That's pretty darn impressive."
Terence Kerns filled in pretty well for Noel Devine, getting tough yards after contact up the middle for 95 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Kerns doesn't quite have that explosive big play potential like Devine has, but he has the ability to blow through tackles and get plenty of yards after contact.
"Kerns played well in Devine's absence," explained running backs coach Chris Beatty, "and it showed up on the scoreboard with a 35-7 win."

Re: Mountaineers Are Always Free!!! (NCAA 09)
Just read your dynasty, really good so far. Bill Stewart is on the hot seat in my eyes if he don't deliver a big bowl game to WVU... I would of have canned him after back to back toilet bowl games...Comment

Mountaineers Top UConn at "The Rent"
Mountaineers slip by UConn 27-17
East Hartford, CT (AP) - The seventh-ranked undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers (8-0, 4-0 Big East) were able to overcome a 10-0 deficit early on to come back to win 27-17 over a very underrated Connecticut Huskies squad (6-1, 2-1 Big East), who came in with only one loss on the year.
Coley White was the leading rusher and passer in this game as he passed for 197 yards and rushed for another 61 yards. White threw for a career-high three touchdowns while only throwing a single pick. This was perhaps White's best game as a Mountaineer.
"He's starting to look a bit like the old White we had a few years back," head coach Bill Stewart gleamed. "I don't know if he'll ever be quite the player Pat was, but Coley is a good player in his own right. It has to be hard to be someone like him because you're always inevitably going to be compared to your older brother, who was probably the best player in school history along with Major Harris."
And we compare Coley to Pat on here all the time. So I guess we're playing along then?
Connecticut has been tough at "The Rent" in recent years and tonight was no exception. A 70 yard Zach Frazer touchdown pass off of a broken tackle resulted in a touchdown to put the Huskies up 10-0 in a primetime game in East Hartford. However, the Mountaineers never lost their poise and after two quick scores in the next few minutes, the Mountaineers led 14-10 at halftime.
At one point the 'Eers led 27-10 before UConn made a comeback in the fourth quarter, getting within the 10 yard line with seconds remaining and a chance to get within 27-24. However, the Mountaineer defense held and walked away with a 27-17 victory over a tough Huskies team.
With every other team in the Big East having two or more conference losses now, the Big East Title will likely be decided in the Mountaineers' final game of the season, a game at Heinz field against an undefeated Pitt squad. The game could potentially decide who goes to the National Championship Game as well.

Too Close For Comfort
Mountaineers survive scare against Cincinnati
Morgantown, WV (AP) - The fans at Mountaineer Field breathed a collective sigh of relief when Montrell Godfrey drilled a 30 yard field goal with time expiring to give the fifth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (9-0, 5-0 Big East) a 37-34 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats (5-2, 2-2 Big East).
The Mountaineers trailed 24-12 at halftime and trailed by 15 points with one minute left in the fourth quarter with the score at 34-19.
The Mountaineers were missing tackles, allowing huge plays, making mistakes, and playing pathetically on defense throughout the entire game. Then the fourth quarter changed and things changed for the better.
Realization came in that they could actually lose this game, so the Mountaineers got it together and rallied to score the game's final 18 points to keep their National Title hopes alive and move on to 10-0 and 6-0 in the Big East, setting up a de-facto Big East Championship Game in two weeks against the similarly undefeated Pittsburgh Panthers.
"We played pretty poorly today on both sides of the ball and made many uncharacteristic mistakes," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "However, like great teams do, we still found a way to win and woke up and played well when it mattered most. While I'm not proud of the game as a whole, I'm proud of the way our men stepped up and played tremendous football during that fourth quarter. They showed a lot of heart.
"Pittsburgh is a great opponent and it will be great to decide who wins the Big East and potentially goes to the National Championship Game against our rivals. It should be a dandy in two weeks, but first we have to take care of N.C. State next week."
The Mountaineers play their final non-conference game of the season against N.C. State next week at home, which will be Senior Day, before traveling 55 miles north of Morgantown to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

'Eers Just Slip Past NC State
Mountaineers have fourth quarter woes, beat Wolfpack
Morgantown, WV (AP) - The seniors left on top with a win in their final game at Mountaineer Field, but it wasn't pretty as the #4 West Virginia Mountaineers (10-0, 6-0 Big East) nearly threw away the game in the fourth quarter, but just slipped by NC State (6-4, 3-4 ACC) by a score of 27-24.
The Mountaineers led 27-10 early late in the fourth quarter until a Russell Wilson touchdown pass pulled the Wolfpack within 10 with 2:47 remaining.
Strangely, Bill Stewart called for a passing play with just over a minute remaining and it was pick-sixed, bringing NC State within 27-24. The wheels were falling apart for WVU.
Then, the Mountaineers really almost gave the game away when Coley White fumbled the football with 40 seconds left. NC State got the ball and only had to get a field goal to tie the game at 27.
Fortunately, the Mountaineer defense held and walked away with a 27-24 closer-than-expected win over 6-4 NC State, giving the Mountaineers their 11th win of the season.
"We were fortunate to come out on top," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "There was no excuse for us letting up like we did there. You have to play hard until the final whistle. You can't let up with three minutes to go or you'll throw some games away. That almost happened today."

BIG EAST CHAMPIONS!!!
Mountaineers beat Pitt, claim Big East Title
Pittsburgh, PA (AP) - A strong showing by the fourth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (11-0, 6-0 Big East) propelled them to their first Big East Title since 2007 as the Mountaineers held on to beat undefeated #3 Pittsburgh (11-0, 6-0) by a final score of 30-27.
West Virginia held a 30-7 lead with just under three minutes remaining before Pittsburgh rallied for three touchdowns in the final two-and-a-half minutes. However, the Mountaineers still held on to get the big win and the conference title.
The Mountaineers' gameplan on offense worked to perfection today as the 'Eers just rammed the ball down Pitt's throat over and over. It worked quite well. Terence Kerns picked up two touchdowns on 143 yards rushing on 26 carires tonight, leading the team to the big win.
"We just wanted to impose our will on the defense and that's just what we did," explained West Virginia offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen. "We ran the ball easily and effectively and controlled the ball. It kept our offense in rhythm and wearing down the Pitt defense while keeping their offense cold on the sidelines."
Pittsburgh had to play catch-up the entire game, resulting in only eight carries for the Panthers' star senior, LeShaun McCoy, who ended the night with only 17 yards rushing on eight carires.
Now West Virginia will sit back with their BCS bid locked up and hope that either USC or Florida lose one of their final games, so the Mountaineers can head to the BCS Championship Game. If neither lose, West Virginia will surely disappointed not to be able to go the the National Championship Game after going a perfect 12-0 with several quality non-conference wins.
