Re: The NFL and 2K Are Back Together, 'Non-Simulation' Games Will Release Beginning i
Correction: the NFL absolutely can shut down mods via cease-and-desist letters if whatever mods got enough public attention to where the league felt like such an action was appropriate to protect their intellectual property rights. If the modders continued work and distribution of the mod after the C&D gets issued, then lawsuits start happening.
How companies handle this varies. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company quite frequently slap down Pokémon mods of other games via C&D's for infringing on the companies' intellectual property rights. On the flip side, SEGA historically encourages the modding scene around Sonic The Hedgehog, to the point where several Sonic games officially released by SEGA originated as mods (most famously Sonic Mania, but also Sonic 2 and Sonic CD on mobile).
Given how much of a stick in the mud we know the NFL to be, I have to imagine they'd behave more like Nintendo in this case.

This is what the NFL is looking at
"NBA 2K20" had the biggest launch of any sports video game, according to data from The NPD Group.
NFL is a larger brand than the NBA and NBA allows competition and 2k continues to dominate.
Yes Madden does sell well but a successful business doesn't stay complacent.Last edited by 49UNCFan; 03-12-2020, 08:59 AM.Youtube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1Y...YHoeFjXQJ2Ps4g

Re: The NFL and 2K Are Back Together, 'Non-Simulation' Games Will Release Beginning i
Well, I realize I'm a tad late on this now, but I'm not getting my hopes up yet. Part of me thinks 2K is either going to handle some sort of mobile, casual game or an "NFL Blitz" style mockup. I can only hope the NFL does not renew its exclusivity with EA.
I'm sure EA will do whatever they can to try and maintain that relationship, but it has been horrible for consumers since it started. The same problem with locking "Sunday Ticket" behind a DirecTV subscription. I'll get excited when I hear the NFL 2K series is returning as it was before retirement. Until then, this is all speculative.Comment

I feel the same way. The NFL knows Madden is doing 8 million and rising. If they can get a company like 2K in on the action in a non competitive (direct competition with Madden) fashion, they could squeeze more money out the gaming market. I absolutely love NBA2K for MyLeague and the simulation aspect, but the game is a hit because of the social component. One big thing I'm interested in seeing is how much "fun" the NFL will allow 2K to have. In the Park you have players doing over the top moves, dancing and doing flips; dunking off trampolines; playing as mascots, etc. The NFL essentially killed off endzone celebrations, then reversed and allowed player to interject more "fun" into the game. This is what the NFL is looking at

I'm being a dreamer, but it'd be awesome if 2k and EA joined forces, EA COULD spend all that money and give to 2K to finally make a great game with unlimited funding.Comment

The "casual consumer"? You haven't seen any company market a full simulation football game outside of EA since 2005. You have no idea how it's going to go down lol Your "average consumer" is not just watching TV and seeing a 20 second commercial anymore. Your "average consumer" watches livestreams, sees gameplay trailers, gets accessible alpha builds on Steam. This isn't the 00s anymore, consumers are more informed than ever and a company like 2K has enough name recognition to not fall into "this is just a cheap knockoff". It's just silly to think you NEED NFL backing to survive.
Making a quality AAA sports title takes a lot of resources. Companies are not going to devote a lot of resources to making a game that does not have any kind of licensing. Such a game will not sell enough copies to justify the development cost.
Just because you feel strongly about something doesn't make it true.Comment

Madden is selling well, but if the NFL thinks they can make even more money by changing they will explore that.
Case in point: The changes in this new CBAComment

I think NBA 2k along with the microtransaction are proving NFL is making the wrong move financially.
I think things are going to be different going forward. An Exclusive NFL game getting outsold by an NBA game is probably not sitting well with the NFL right now. It's slowly making the NBA more popular with the younger generation.Youtube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1Y...YHoeFjXQJ2Ps4g

Re: The NFL and 2K Are Back Together, 'Non-Simulation' Games Will Release Beginning i
The ideal way to handle challenges in a game that aims at realism is simply not to have them.
The goal of real-life officiating is to get every call correct. The computer, which already knows what "really happened", has that ability already; forcing a call to require a challenge is artificially introducing an unnecessary error.
To achieve what this guy is asking for means that the computer has to deliberately choose to artificially make the wrong call...it has to pretend to make a mistake. But then it has to become perfect again and get every challenge decision correct, or he's frustrated again.Comment

Re: NFL 2K Coming Back in 2021!!
I have to imagine the lawyers involved have legally codified what "simulation football game" means in some capacity. Not a lawyer myself, obviously, but I assume the exclusivity portion of the contract would be unenforceable without this important detail being very explicitly spelled out for the parties involved; just from this topic alone we see how much potential there is for different interpretations.
Whatever the limitations are, we'll find out whenever 2K reveals their first NFL game under this new arrangement.
It depends on what they're allowed to simulate. They're obviously going to be allowed simulate player likeness. ( I'm assuming they're going to hammer out a deal with the NFLPA because they need be able to use player likeness to have any chance at success. ) Having current players on their current rosters, with the current NFL schedule, is the only thing that I think could clearly be interpreted as simulating the NFL. I mean, does non-simulation mean that they can't simulate the sport of football in an authentic manner? Does it mean the game can't be 11-11? Does it mean they can't have the exact same rules as the NFL ( like the same number a of challenges, extra points being the same distance, or kickoffs having the same rules? ). I have a hard time believing that 2k would be interested with those kinds of limitations, but who knows?Comment

After playing Retro Bowl the last couple days, if 2K made something like that with console quality graphics I think it'd be DOPE!

I have come to think of EA as the evil empire. I seriously loath this company. It has come to point where I only buy EA games 3rd party and do no in game purchase, to be sure I give them zero financial support.
They do nothing but neglect sim players for a DECADE, yet have an exclusive to be the only sim game maker. Awesome.
It is seriously shameful.Comment

I don't think that would be good idea at all, we need legit options. Real competition drives innovation, keeps companies honest, and on their toes. These two companies need to push each other to be the best that they can be.Last edited by Darth Aegis; 03-12-2020, 01:41 PM.OS needs a Thumbs DOWN button

2K is not hurting for money. Not only do they have NBA but they also have Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, which are some of the best selling games (And I believe all these games have tons of microtransactions that generate money after sale)Comment
