Re: The NFL and 2K Are Back Together, 'Non-Simulation' Games Will Release Beginning i

    It's not that easy.

Demographics: The NFL fan is 41% more likely to be a Male than a Female, and is most likely to fall with the 50-59 age range. Where the NFL seems to be losing viewer interest is within the 20-29-year-old age range, as those consumers are 10% less likely to be interested in the NFL. In terms of income, we see the “sweet spot” for interest for online users with a household income between $75-$100k (10% more likely than average to earn this amount).

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is unique in US professional sports because it has the youngest overall audience. It also has the higher share of African-Americans who regularly view its games.

45% of NBA fans that regularly watch games are under the age of 35. That’s the same percentage of African-American viewers, which is 3x higher than college basketball or even the NFL.
More than 7% of NBA fans play fantasy sports, which is actually a higher percentage of the fan demographic than the NFL.

The average NBA fan is 16% more likely to be single than the general population.
Football is still king, but it is an old dying sport, and I am not surprised it is less popular with the average video game customer.

I agree with the first point that it does seem odd this is the first time we have ever heard the term 'Non-Simulation', the first time in over a decade since the exclusive license was given to EA. Within minutes of the 2K/NFL deal, EA had a nice press release ready to go to remind us that they are the only company who can make a simulation NFL game. That reaction was very defensive, and 100% it's a bit overboard to say they are scared, but to have a press release ready is more than just the NFL informing them of the deal.

We won't be able to simulate a NFL season? That again is such a vague term, because if so Axis Football would have been shutdown considering you can do a Draft, and sign free agents. Does that count as simulating a NFL season? Does having a Franchise Mode, which is a mode used in most sports games mean being able to simulate a NFL Season?
I'm sure there's an entire section in their agreement that outlines exactly what constitutes a simulation game and it's likely something that was outlined by EA when they re-upped with the NFL. It could mean literally anything from not being allowed to have real players on real teams in real stadiums to going as far as dictating that it can't be 11-on-11 or include certain features, etc. but it's impossible to know.

Everything is going to be speculation at this point and it could be anything from a Super Mega Baseball type football game with 11-on-11 gameplay and a season mode or an NFL street type game, Superstar KO type game or even a MUT type game. But without knowing how EA's and the NFL's agreement defines "simulation" it's impossible to gauge anything because it's such a vague term that could have any number of bullet points and stipulations for 2K to work around.

I would like to know how total sales of both sports games markets from PS2 days to now compare. What was Madden/2k series ceiling in 2004? Was the NBA market all Live back then? I honestly can’t remember.
We may be able to determine if either sports market has actually gained ground looking at it from this perspective.

I’ve wondered, like many, is the football market saturated or is Madden being exclusive actually holding back a lot of growth potential?

Good point...I hope 2k’s non-simulation game isn’t a 7 on 7 thing, maybe it is as simple as someone said just players with generic names.
Madden is a game I’m done with...even with the great slider people who tweak and adjust to try and make the mess Madden gives you ...it becomes futile.
IMO Madden isn’t a simulation either...
2k was way ahead of the curve then...hoping for a future game that resembles football as we know it.

I will be buying every last sim, arcade, ANY 2k football game just to send a message to the NFL the exclusive with 1 company MUST end.

We have waited 15 yrs for this, and if we don't support, it will be another 15+ years until we see any other NFL game.

Saying that, lets be real. Madden is a arcade game too. How arcade will they have to make it since Madden is already arcade? Don't they even have a arcade type setting in options??

I know blind supporting is usually a horrible thing, but I'm willing to do it, and hope everyone else is too. If their sales numbers go to historic levels for just one release it will force the NFL to see the light of day.

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) today issued the following statement regarding the NFL-EA SPORTS partnership:

“EA SPORTS is the exclusive publisher of NFL simulation games, and our partnership with the NFL and NFLPA remains unchanged. Our agreements have always allowed for non-exclusive development of non-simulation games on various platforms. Our commitment to NFL fans, which spans almost 30 years, has never been stronger, and we’re having our biggest year yet. Madden NFL 20 is the most successful game ever in the franchise, and new modes like Superstar KO and our Madden NFL esports broadcasts are growing the fan base. We’ll be building on that momentum with more new and different experiences, on more platforms and with new ways to play, in the years to come.”

This agreement ends in 2021 genius.

Every corporation wants more, but at #3, there is not a lot of more to get, and that factors into what they increase their budget towards.

As far as exclusivity and such, I'm sure the NFL is willing to give it to whoever pays them the most. Nothing more, nothing less. Gamers tend to massively overrate how much the powers that be give a rats *** about the quality of the game they are being paid to be allowed to be made. This could be about as much as 2K trying to see if they still have devs in the house that can make a game, to see if they even want to try to outbid EA for the NFL license.

But, man, watching so many people here spin narratives like the NFL is looking for a better game or EA is scared are setting themselves up for disappointment. Some folks should maybe go back and read some threads about Joe Montana Football before buying into some narrative that was just made up in someone's mind.
Nurturing and expanding the audience is the NFL's main objective today, rather then the train of thought 15 years ago was about the upfront money being the only concern. NBA 2K5 sold less then 1 million units, NBA 2K19 sold 12 million units. Madden 2005 sold 6 million units, while Madden 19 sold 8 million units and that was with no competition where as NBA 2K had competition from NBA Live. 2K's example is what I would call nurturing and expanding the audience while EA's has been stagnant. Besides who says the NFL can't do both today, get the money by having 2 competing NFL titles and in the process expand the audience while doing so. I don't understand the thought process of people who say the NFL can only charge a certain amount if the license is exclusive. The reality is if the NFL wants to make demands and say, "Look here's our asking price for anyone who wants to make a title, 1 billion dollars for X amount of years." They can do just that. Is EA going to say no we aren't going to make a NFL game unless it's exclusive and leave the football videogame market? I think not. The NFL has the right and all of the leverage to charge whatever to whoever they choose be it non-exclusive as it will be in 2022 for sim football and still ask for a hefty exclusive license amount of money for it.

While somewhat true, that new deal between EA and the NFL could just as easily be non-exclusive beyond 2021.

Take-Two is in a far stronger position today than they were 15 years ago to competitively bid for exclusive rights to NFL/NFLPA licenses. Plus, the NFL has openly expressed an eagerness to partner with Take-two/2k on "future projects". So I wouldn't necessarily count EA as an automatic lock to outbid them and that's IF a bid is even needed.

                                New CBA approved.

Players are hoping for New TV deals as their revenue can go up to 48.8%.

I’m thinking this new agreement is a big reason why 2k and the NFL are opening the door. Right now it’s cracked and with money being the bottom line for the NFL/Players I think very soon the door is wide open.
