    Re: Official CBA Thread

What I'm hoping for in this CBA is a complete revamp of 2010 rules which hurt teams last year . I think unrestricted FA shouldn't happen till 6 years in, rookie salary cap, salary cap rules. I hope all that can be done in next month so we don't have to go with 2010 rules that's not a new CBA that's a bandaid.

I don't think there's any reason that any form of the uncapped rules will become standard year to year.

Not sure how I feel about 6 year UFA. Feels like a long time when people like to tout that players are in the league for only 3.x years.

I'd probably prefer 4 years, with 2-3 year standard slotted rookie contracts.

I just hope that the 18 game is finally scrapped. Albert Breer tweeted that each side is making consessions on all issues -- hope the 18 game season is one that owners are giving up on.

They gave up on that in March. I expect it to stay that way, and evaluated in 2 years and only implemented with the approval of both the NFL and the NFLPA. That was what was proposed 3/11.

They need time to gauge the effectiveness of other proposed safety related measures and workout changes.

What six years does though is allow the player to make more money over a longer period of time, or less depending. But it also give the team a better chance at keeping a core together . Plus contract will still be not guaranteed so they can still cut them. Plus if a player does get a four year contract because he's still restricted he could still get a two year contract with a different team his former team holding rights for a buyout. so its like a franchise or transition tag without the avg salary component. since I think those tags will be out.

I'm not expecting any big changes with things like the franchise or transition tags... the players are well compensated for being 'stuck'. I think you build a core of a team by running a good organization and making players want to play for you, rather than design it into labor guidelines.

              Hope this is true:

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has reported that some of the parties in the negotiations believe an agreement could be reached “within a matter of days.”

Freeman also reports that 80 to 85 percent of the next labor deal has been negotiated, and that the entire process has become very cordial, with smiles, handshakes, and smalltalk.

“It’s going to be very difficult for this to get screwed up,” a source “with intimate knowledge of the discussions” told Freeman.

I think 6 years is a good number for a number of reasons:

                      1) It allows teams to actually build through the draft like it was done for a good 20-25 years before FA got to be more prevalent.

                      2) Players who come into the league hopefully with a slotted money system in the draft will be able to make a good bit of money but not kill teams right away with extraordinary contract demands. It would also allow some of the more "undesirable" teams to actually draft the best talent rather passing on a guy because he's throwing a hissy fit.

                      3) While 6 years seems like a lot of years it's not too crazy a number as more and more players are making it past the historical 3 years played in the league stat. The 6 years also keeps a sense of brand building as teams will have players grow and mature together and create identities such as was the case back in the day. This would also put a lot more emphasis on the front office's ability to find and utilize talent rather than falling back into FA when things start hitting the fan.

The only thing that'd make this better to me and it's never going to happen so I won't dwell on it is to go back to the whole Plan B FA set up. Again, it's too limited a system but it did work for a good while.
