Cool that you were there, though!

Interested in your overall thoughts on the experience whenever you feel like sharing. I've heard everything from 'trip of a lifetime' to 'overrated'. Although I guess it's moot since no one is going for the foreseeable future anyway...

I've been to a US Open (Congressional - it was hot/muggy) and while I love watching golf, 100 out of 100 times I'd rather just go play a round than attend any tournament no matter how big it is.

Interestingly enough, I can see both ends of it.

Ultimately, I would call it a bucket list item that I'm thrilled I got to do but won't necessarily go out of my way to do it again (certainly wouldn't turn it down if presented to me).

My timing was extremely lucky. I went in 09 (maybe 10, can't remember) and it was Tiger's first tournament back after the 08 US open win and subsequent surgery's.

We only had tickets for the Wednesday practice round and we were there all day. In the morning though, the crowd was extremely thin and we were able to walk the first nine along side Tiger with rope side access to watching him up close. I will never forget that.

After his front nine the crowd began to grow quickly so we gave up trying to follow Tiger and just walked our way to Amen corner to be there for a bit and just took our time taking in the rest of the course.

We tried to catch some of the Par 3 tournament but the crowds were unreal so we only saw a bit of that.

So we were extremely lucky with our timing and smaller crowds in the morning for a practice round but I can only imagine what it would have been like Thursday through Sunday.

Augusta itself......Nothing to do at all. And we even stayed an hour away so if you go, it's solely for the tournament and essentially nothing else (so I can see why some may say overrated).

EDIT: I think it's very important to add that we got our tickets via the raffle so they were much more affordable than buying via a third party.

        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Appreciate you sharing your experiences, kehlis. I also had the best time at the US Open with the practice rounds; when the Open was last at Oakland Hills, I saw a young up-and-coming potential future star playing his practice round named Eldrick Woods. That was pretty cool (although I had no idea at the time whether I'd ever hear from him again or not....LOL). If given a chance, I would definitely make the trip at least once to check out Augusta. If only to walk the grounds once.

On another note, I was playing a round with an old beater set of clubs the other day, and one of the clubs in there was a Taylormade burner 7-iron. The club felt absolutely great in my hands and I was hitting the ball really well with it. I know that line of clubs is like 20 years old, but I swear if I could buy a brand-new set of them right now, I totally would.

How are you liking the SIM Max's? I am considering a new set of irons and those are one of the sets I would consider (mostly based on my history of hitting TaylorMade irons like the aforementioned Burners). I'm strongly considering going to graphite shafted irons, despite the fact that I know my dispersion will be worse. I'm willing to sacrifice accuracy for distance and a lower swing-weight at this point.

I only play the Sim Max in the 5 Iron because I don't optimally launch the P790 5 Iron, so I just need something that gets the ball in the air more.

Also, that's not necessarily the case. No guarantees you sacrifice dispersion if you actually fit into graphite shafts.

Made it out for the first time this season on Saturday. It was a gorgeous 22C out so I can't complain about the weather. Shot a 40 on the front nine (Par 36) which wasn't bad for a first round. Normally by this time I would be about 1000 swings at the range, but this year I went cold turkey so it was interesting. I think I made 3 putts outside 20 feet which I hope can carry over into the regular season. I didn't realize how out of shape I was until Sunday when every golf muscle I used was sore.

Shot a 79 today. Putting has been lights out. The driver has been remarkable this year. Got home to this sitting at my door. The bag for the year is complete. At least for now.

^ Love it. Big fan of of the SIM Max and SIM Max 2 clubs.

Played my second round ever (had started practicing/getting a few lessons since November last year) this morning and shot a 96, although I need to double check, because that seems too low.

A lot of ugly out there, but had my first two birdies ever and liked how I was reading the greens.

Very good point. And I'm told (and I believe) graphite shafts have come a long way since the days of the Wilson Firesticks. I think it probably also has to do with where/how you get speed in your swing, which is also the point you were alluding to. I generally generate my clubhead speed from the weight of the clubhead itself (more of 'pendulum' swing speed vs an arms/hands swing) so I will definitely want to get on a TrackMan and see what does/doesn't work better for me.

Great job! Your only issue going forward will be finding enough hours in a day to play...

Yeah, as a club fitter, myself, I would never make a generalization about what should or shouldn't work. There's some many graphite shafts now, hell, they can make graphite stiffer than steel now. Bryson's iron shafts are graphite and freq out as the stiffest shaft on the market. We're realistically 15-20 years away from steel iron and wedge shafts being obsolete. It'll be graphite across every level of player.

I truly believe, if the golf equipment industry tries hard enough, they can make me a 120g graphite shaft that performs exactly like my steel ones but costs significantly more.

The spring has been kind to us for a change. I’ll be getting my 8th round of the year in tomorrow. There have been years where the courses in town have barely even opened by now. I played my first 9 on April 3rd. A new personal Duluth record for earliest round!

I have not played in 3 weeks, as I have been focusing on my finals for school. I should have all my finals wrapped up by Monday and I plan on golfing as much as I can. I may have to see a pro for an hour sometime this week or next, because my game is really off. I just need someone to tell me what my glaring issues are, so I can start working on correcting them.

There already is. A popular one right now, Mitusbishi MMT shafts are already made in 95g, 105g, and 125g weights. I've messed around with them a little bit, and have enjoyed them. They're popping up in driving irons on tour, hell Rickie had them in his irons not too long ago. Plus Aerotech Steelfibers are a similar concept/weight, that have been around for a few years. The tech is already there, but no one has really committed to them being a primary focus. Closest that it's been was when Callaway released the Epic Forged iron a couple years ago, Steelfiber FC's were considered the stock steel shaft in them.
