Heading to the northern part of Wisconsin for Labor Day weekend, and will be checking out the Apostle Islands as part of the trip. While I'm up there, I'll be playing Madeline Island Golf Club. It's a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design, which opened back in the 1960s. The course offers picturesque views of Lake Superior on seven of the holes.

Because it's on a small island that's just 14 miles long and 8 miles wide, the course has a very interesting layout in order to get 18 holes in such tight quarters. There are multiple double greens, several shared tee boxes, and holes that share fairways. Because of the double greens, the front nine holes use red flags and the back nine uses white flags.

The most unique holes are Nos. 6 and 15, which share a fairway, then split off in doglegs heading the opposite direction. See the layout below...

I'm looking forward to playing this layout, as not many of these kinds of courses can be found around here. I'll be sure to report back how "well" I play next week!

Right in between where I live now and where I grew up. Have you ever checked out some of the places in the UP? There is some excellent golf up there. I feel like it’s a bit of a hidden gem because it’s so inconvenient to get there.

I've played Newberry Country Club...we camp every summer with my wife's family near there right on Lake Superior at Michigan's Muskallonge Lake State Park. I've always wanted to play St. Ignace Country Club, which has amazing views of the Mackinac Bridge.

Well, I got my chance to play Madeline Island GC last Saturday, and it was a unique experience for sure.

Because most holes used double greens, the putting surfaces were enormous - some greens are more than 50 yards wide. This helped me have 67% GIR for the round...but also led to six 3-putts and even a 4-putt!

Still, even with the putting woes, I shot 87, breaking 90 for the second time in my life. The highlight was dunking a 70-yard approach shot into the hole on No. 7, only to have it bounce out due to the Covid-19 pool noodle in the bottom of the cup.

The weather was also perfect, the views were amazing, and it was a great part of the vacation. I hope to go back and play again some day!

Anyone familiar / implement any of Lucas Walds ideology into their golf swing? I took the full dive into retooling my swing to fit more of his ideology and haven't looked back.

              Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I just watched his video on the transition and I like the way he teaches. Never watched him before but I'll definitely start watching his vids.

I also like GG. You should give his videos a peep.

Set a personal best today. I regularly play this par 64 course in Queens, NY and I had been stuck at 85 for the last 4 years. I started going backwards with my short game and that was the only good part of my game when I shot that score. After having a golfing revelation earlier this summer about the golf swing as an action around your body rather than back and up, I started putting other pieces of the swing together...like how to keep the arms tension free and using my body to swing the arms like in other athletic movements. I've gained 50 yards off the tee and no more slice!! Getting rid of that slice is just a magical feeling after playing through it for 5 years of playing golf.

Shot a 74 tonight and I think I could done even better had the last couple of holes weren't played in near darkness.

One thing I've done this summer that's really helped my game the most was to figure out how to deliver the club through the hitting zone with a square face. I used to play a strong grip because everybody told me I'd hit it further. I threw that out the window and let my swing determine the grip I should use. Turns out that I naturally deliver the club with a neutral grip position and my game has hit new levels. I may not always score well but ball striking and higher ball flight are much improved.

Something pretty cool for me. If you get Golf Digest and got this month's Masters Preview issue, turn to page 44 to see a few quotes from me about fitting different levels of handicaps.

I totally agree, there are also many beginners too, so this kind of attitude helps these new players.

                    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Finally got out this past week after being confined for 3 weeks due to Covid.
Started feeling bad at work and called off next day. Went to get tested and was a positive test.

A few days later I hit rock bottom and was told to go to ER.
Spent 1/2 day in ER on IV and multiple tests (Ended up with a bacterial infection at same time)
                    and the rest at home.
                    Wasn't fun.

Anyways after I got the all clear this past week and a test to confirm I was clean I went out this week.
Shot an 88 which I was surprised with but it could have been a 108 and I'd have been happy since I was outside enjoying life

We have are yearly golf trip scheduled for Feb and so I have a decent amount of time to prep to lose some money lol

Just completed our first annual golf trip down here in Victoria, Australia. 13th Beach Creek Course day one, I took home first place with a scratchy 31 pts including 3 birdies. Lots of average golf with some brilliant in between. Day 2 was just a local course on the Great Ocean Rd. We played a 6 man ambrose and scored -12 with many raging hangovers amongst the group. Great to be enjoying the sunshine and company of others.

                        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

So I am up in Canada and the golf season is terribly short, but this year I decided that I would set a goal when it comes to golf. I have decided that my goal this year is to break par again. I am a 6 handicap and have only ever shot below par golf once in my life. I just can't seem to put it all together on the same day to get below that line, but this year I am going to focus on doing just that. Covid has been a bitch and I want to put my extra time at home towards achieving that goal.

So, for the month of February I have decided to invest 20 minutes a day towards doing something that will improve my chances of doing just that and then as we get closer to golf season, usually May, I will up that and be a bit more specific with what I am doing. Things that I am looking at doing includes mental preparation, healthier eating, losing some weight, getting more agile, etc.

Started on Monday with reading Harvey Penick's Little Red book. It always is a great read and there is still so much you can take from it. Yesterday I did a full wash and clean-up of my clubs and gold bag. I think starting a new year with everything clean and shiny just helps set a great tone for the season.

I am going to use this thread as a way to keep me motivated and hold myself accountable. I may not post every day but will do updates over time.

What are your "Golf Goals" for this season?

My golf goals are to try to get out more often. I guess that's everyone's goal, but I will expand my definition of "getting out" to range or course. I definitely need more range work. Clubface is closing too fast and I'm not finishing all the way through, so lots to work on.
