Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Put together a nice 38 (2 bogeys, 7 pars) to end out my league's regular season. We finished 3rd out of 12 teams. I kind of wish the league went a few more weeks, but it kind of works out this way with every team playing each other once.
Next week is the annual scramble and banquet. It's pretty fun because you can have as many players that played for your team as you want. Last year I think we had 6 or 7 from our roster. We must defend our title!Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Wow, I didn't really know this thread existed. I play golf every once in a while, but I'm so bad at it. I've only taken my clubs to the driving range and to the par three course next to it. Someday I'll try out the courses in the area, but I'm pretty new at it.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
My golf game has been frustrating at best.
For the last seven years, every year from when the snow melts [typically] in Mid-March until when the snow flies [typically] in late-November, I try to get out 2-3 times a week...yet the last year or so my game has plateau'd as being a bogey golfer at best.
There's a Par 3 course in the area that I'm a member at and do a majority of my golfing at. It's not the easiest of Par 3 courses, it's been voted as one of the top Par 3 courses in the nation on multiple occasions...but I just can't conquer it despite golfing it for nearly 50 9-hole rounds a year. My personal best there is a 34, and typically end up closer to the 38-40 range.
I try to sprinkle in big courses a 2-4 times each month, and I can't improve on those either. Personal best is an 87, but typically more in the 95 range.
I don't really know what to do at this point.
I have a serious slice with my driver. I've tried in the past to fix it at the range, eventually gave up and try to play with it. But when I have serious trees on my left, I'm screwed.
My irons I actually have more of a tendency to pull. It's not nearly as bad and slightly inconsistant.
I love my wedges and would love to play with them all day. I feel extremely confident with anything from 20-100 yards.
Putting is so up and down. Some days it's great, other days I can't make a putt longer than 3 feet. The other day I could have probably easily knocked ten strokes off my round if I could just two putt the damn greens.
I don't know what to do at this point. I golf plenty. I've tried hacking up the driving range, usually it doesn't help much. I really can't afford the crazy rates for lessons. I've tried going to the range when they have an "apparent pro" to help you out with lessons and never did much. Not to mention after seven years of developing bad habits, I wonder how hard it will be to fix some of these problems.
I'd just like to develop SOME consistency. To be 7-over through eight holes only to finish at 25 over is frustrating.
I'm not expecting to be a perfect golfer. I'd just like to get to the point where I can consistently be a bogey or better golfer. I could live with that.
That being said, I have three outtings planned in the next five days. I'll figure this out eventually, right?Last edited by TimmeH; 08-17-2011, 01:38 AM.Co-Commish of the OS Vets I & II

I shot a 57 front nine the other day, made some adjustments and shot a much better 48 later in the day (and that 48 should have been much better). Every shot was sooo much better. The adjustment I made was I concentrated on my best shot, which was my wedges. What did I do with those that I didn't do with anything else. I thought it was swing pace. So I concentrated on having the same smooth, balanced swing I use on my wedges as I do on everything else, and it resulted in me dropping 9 strokes on my back nine. The way I see it, is if there is something you do well on the course, use that to try and find out what's wrong with everything else.Comment

I'm in a similar situation where I've lost the ability to consistently hit my irons and while I can figure it out on the driving range, I can't take that with me to the course. Once I have a steady income, I'm planning to get a couple of lessons myself. Hopefully I can get a couple of tips and be on my way, but we'll see.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Shot a 55 on 9 today. Really great pitching and putting and off the tee, I was at my best. Actually played a very steady round with only about 4 bad shots.....Since I can count them on one hand, I'd have to say today was a good round for me.
My brother almost killed a seagull on his way to a 75.....The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!Comment

LOL...yeah. My brother got so angry today that, looking back, I'm not sure he wasn't aiming for the seagull....but then again, he wasn't hitting anything he was aiming at so probably not....The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I bit the bullet and took a 30 minute lesson with the pro at my country club I'm a member at. He retooled my swing: got me turning with my hips instead of using all arms, and my shot has straightened out a ton. As the new swing has started to feel more natural, my scores have gotten a little lower and I'm being more consistent.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
After being out of golf for a while now, I went back to my local par 3 course. I shot a 70, which is better than my last five rounds from the past year. However, I had some interesting challenges with interpreting the rules. First of all, there has been a severe drought here, and this course has really felt it. The fairways are nearly no-existent, and there are plenty of large cracks everywhere. I had to take a provisional because one of my balls landed in the mini-canyon that formed along the fringe on the second hole. Then, I had a ball land past one of the greens in near a not so happy looking snake in tall grass. Needless to say, I just took the drop.
I think that one thing that would help my swing would be a new set of irons. The current set that's in my bag was purchased at a yard sale about nine years ago. It's had its $30 of use (and I remember that because I mowed for weeks in the dead of summer to get that money), but it's time to get some better clubs. If anybody has any advice on what to look at, I'll do it.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Well after back to back days of golf I can say I am not getting any better.
The scores haven't been bad, 82-82, but they have been anything but good looking rounds. I think I may have hurt myself moving rocks the other day because my swing feel way off, but my outting has been good and that is why the rounds haven't been that bad. Hit my first fairway today on the 11th hole and that was because you have to lay up to the edge of a cliff so I hit a 6 iron. Just don't feel confident right now.
Oh well, take a week or so off and hopefully forget all the bad.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Wow, my team ended up winning the scramble today with a -13 by one shot. Like I said before, I was probably our weakest player, but I made some contributions. We also won one of three skins that were out with an eagle on a par 4. It was a 330-yard hole, and our anchor guy hit his drive to within 10 feet. It was a profitable day!
One of the other skins that was won was an ace by the group behind us. We were on the tee and heard them getting kind of excited. Then they went absolutely bonkers, and we knew immediately what had happened.
A random thing about the team we played with is one of the guys on their team plays for the Penguins in the NHL.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 08-20-2011, 10:17 PM.Comment
