    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Pretty much everything fistofrage said is spot-on. I think the breakdown is pretty much a combination of mental and not the best swing mechanics and complete lack of ability to save myself from poor shots. One bad shot on a hole and it usually takes me completely out of making any kind of number. At least, any kind of number that you would want to put on your card....

Got out again today, and played much better. Much more under control. I played really conservatively, and surprisingly, my score ended up much better. If I hadn't missed a boatload of short par putts (again, can never sync everything up at the same time), I'd have shot a pretty good round (for me - mid-80's maybe). But I was definitely swinging under control, and I never went for the 'hero' shot - pitched out from behind the treelines, didn't go for the greens in 2 on the par 5's, and generally swung more under control and sacrificed the occasional/infrequent fantastic shot for a consistent 50th percentile shot that wasn't beautiful by any stretch but rarely out of play or radically out of position. Made a huge difference.

Over-swinging had become the norm for me. Dialing that back is going to be a project. But that's what summer days are for.

Tell yourself you are only going to take the club back 75%. What happens is you will go back 95% and stay in complete balance and flush more shots.

Definitely. When I watch the video, I'm definitely bringing it back almost to parallel even when I think I'm swinging like Jon Rahm. Pro tip to self: you are not swinging like Jon Rahm.

I can only carry one swing thought with me to each shot, and the one that's consistently worked the best for me is: SLOW/EASY TRANSITION. I'm convinced that 75% of my swing problems happen when my backswing-to-downswing transition gets too fast/abrupt/sudden. It pulls me off plane and all sorts of mis-hits happen, and it's just generalized bad-ness whenever I get too hasty.

I know no one here cares (and shouldn't), but I'm saying this in 'public' only because I feel like it'll help me remember next time I get out. Let's hope it works!

Played a new course for me on Sunday.
          Bridges Golf Club in PA.
          Shot an 85 ( 42 followed by a 43 )
Putting was spot on as well as my short game saves.

Just need to get a few more approaches closer to pin and I can get lower.
Feels so good to have confidence in a lot of my game these days.

Some days, you just can't get sync'd up at all, the body and timing are just all off, and I simply can't get the face solidly on the ball all day long.

Today was one of those days. Major step back after I thought I was getting close. Now I want to go drown a sack full of kittens.

              Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

If I could just fix the random shanks I have every rand, I'd be set. My hcp has ballooned to a 15 (from a 12) in a year. The shanks are only during my wedges, and they will occur with pitching and chipping only. I'm on my 3rd lesson tomorrow with my pga pro, and we're going to tackle it tomorrow, along with the driver.

Hitting everything else great though. Have a repeatable swing, and no longer coming over the top. He's made it incredibly easy.

Address1: higher hands (meaning the handle is raised higher and my hands are flexed down more, basically the club's edge is "flush" with the ground from heel to toe).

Address2: ball is aligned closer to the toe of the club

Address3: weight is on the heels more than the balls and toes. Reason is I tend to get on my toes on the downswing.

Backswing: out of the target line, meaning I push the club back, but it's outside of the target line. This keeps the width, and keeps my hands further away from my head. Also, it makes me know how far outside I am in the backswing, then I'm bound to go inside in the downswing.

Downswing: right elbow immediately goes after my right front pocket. This keeps the hands inside so the club stays outside my hands, and thus delivering an in-out path.

That's it. I've found I get less on my toes on the downswing as a result. I feel that my setup with the wedges may be the issue as I tend to set up more open, and am used to spinning hips on the backswing and downswing - leaving the club far behind me, resulting in hosel rockets.

Had my lesson today and yup, only took 10 minutes to fix the shanks with the wedges, and 10 more minutes on the driver.

Wedges: pretty much all set up. I had been setting up closed with my lower and upper body/shoulders. As I brought the club down, the hosel was leading because I have been so used to swinging out. So, all I had to do was set up with my lower body open, and upper body closed. This allowed me to push the handle forward and not worry about the hosel as the ball just took off. Such an amazing feeling of control again, with no worry/hesitations.

Driver: part set up and downswing. Set up I was again too closed, my right foot was back, which resulted in high pushes, and sometimes push slices - despite swinging in-to-out. So, first thing was to move it forward, so I was more square to slightly open. Alos, turns out my first move down was still OTT. So my instructor had me do halfswings, and on the downswing actually try to hit the ground behind my right foot. He said he'd pay me $100 if I did it. First I had to make sure my backswing had the club graze the ground a lot longer so I'm not picking up the club on the takeway. Tried my best to hit the ground on my downswing, and never could, instead I just kept hitting the ball flush and straight. Took it to the full swing, and that was it. A nice power fade.

My tee time tomorrow will most likely get rained out unfortunately, but at least I'm starting to see some immediate improvements.

                  Last round this past week....
                  Shot an 88.. with a 10 and 2 7's on the card.
Man I just can't stop from getting blowups.

I still easily beat my friend mainly due to my start and him getting flustered (in a fun way) about it.

I started: Par, Bogey, Birdie, Birdie, Birdie, par.. lol

That was the first time I ever got back to back to back birds.

All in all though it was a very enjoyable round I just need to figure out why I blowup and then when I do, how to put water on fire.

Just put a 10 on a scorecard for the first time in my life. I let it bother me too much and then put up a 7 on the next hole.

Yeah I'm good for occasional 7/8 but a 10 really shook (and ticked me off) lol

Playing Monday at another new course for me. Glade Valley in Md.
6 of us heading out. Going to have a little competition. Should be really fun.

Yeah, I have the exact same problem. I'll be cruising along, and then next thing you know I post a 8 or a 9 or something. For me, it basically boils down to 2 things:

                        1) hitting a ball into a hazard or OB (obvious, but I almost never recover to make a bogey after something like that happens...)
                        2) 1 poor shot leaving me in a bad location, which leads to additional poor shots, and then...snowball.

I played with 2 guys yesterday that swung harder than I have ever seen in my life. They could absolutely murder the ball, but it started f'ing up my timing/tempo, and it took me 9 holes just to realize I was swinging way too fast/hard (unconsciously) and I had to dial my own swing back to like a 1/10 just to make contact with the face. I hate when that happens. I wish I could just play with Freddie Couples and Ernie Els so I could get my rhythm down passively instead of playing with people swinging way too hard and I (unintentionally) start swinging way harder than I should....

Golf is a mental game. You are playing the course not your opponents(unless it's late in a match play event and you have to make up some holes and force the action).

So instead of worrying about that 8 or 9 you posted set a realistic goal for yourself of number of pars. Start with 5 pars. You get 5 pars for 18 and bogey 13 you are sitting at 85. Then look on your scorecard and see what holes you didn't get bogey on and really think what you would have done differently to secure at least a bogey. And never make that mistake again. Such as not punching out of trouble or going for a tucked pin instead of center of the green.

I'll repeat it again 5 pars, 13 bogeys get's you 85. You can do that.

Get off work at (hopefully) 4am. Get a few hours sleep, then tee off at 11:30 PM.

                                Also playing Tuesday weather permitting.

Did get some practice in a couple days ago (mainly with wedges) and feel pretty good.
