GDC 2007: "The Wii is a Piece of ****!"
One of Spore's developers rants about Nintendo's "two GameCubes stuck together with duct tape."

During a session at GDC this morning titled 'Burning Mad - Game Publishers Rant,' time was taken about half way through to allow developers a chance to spew their own rants. One speaker, Chris Hecker, currently working on Spore at Maxis, took the opportunity to call out Nintendo for not taken games seriously.

GDC 07: Hecker Apologizes for Wii Comments
A day after bashing Nintendo at a GDC developer rant, Spore designer Chris Hecker offered a public apology.

A day after bashing Nintendo at a GDC developer rant, Spore designer Chris Hecker offered a public apology.

"I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun, and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now," Hecker said.
"I do not think that the Wii is a piece of ****," Hecker said, and he applauded Nintendo for its innovation regarding the Wii's unique controller, its user interface, and the system's affordable price. He also commended Nintendo for its passion at making great games.

                      No More Heroes trailer

It's from the same people that made Killer 7. Looks pretty cool.

                      Description of the game:

In this adventure game directed by Goichi Suda (of Killer 7 fame), you play as Travis Touchdown, a normal guy (with an otaku geek streak to him) who wins a Beam Katana through an online auction and uses the weapon to start a new career as a professional killer. One day, an assassin named Helter Skelter appears before Travis and the two face off in a battle. Travis emerges victorious and finds himself in the presence of Silvia Christel, a mysterious French woman who claims to be an agent with the UAA. Silvia gives Travis official rank of 11 in the organization. Now, it's up to you to become #1.

No More Heroes takes place in the city of Santa Destroy, and you are free to explore the town to your liking, taking on missions large and small to collect money and purchase new weapons as you work up towards the 10 main killing contracts. Gameplay is all about using your Beam Katana (via Wii remote) to defeat enemies.

                        Re: Official Wii Discussion

I'm not a complete Graphics snob but I got distracted at how awful the games look.

I played SSX Blur over the weekend on a HDTV and the graphics were no better than a Gamecube game. It's pretty sad when some people get excitied that a Wii game supports 16x9.

The graphics already look dated right now, how much worse is it going to get when we see PS3 and Xbox 360 games 2-3 years from now.

Graphics by itself don't make a great game but it can really hurt it.

HD owners are no longer a niche group. I wish Nintendo made a console that supported HDTV's.

Also the sound coming out of the controller was awful. I wish there wasn't a wire to hold the remote and nunchuck together.

I know the Wii has more power than Xbox, so hopefuly better looking games are coming out (SMG shows a lot promise).

According to a few news sites, they're already in the process of coming out with a wireless nunchuck. Much needed.

As for the graphics, aside from a game like Madden, I really don't care. With Madden, I just felt like I was playing an old game. With the other games I have though (Zelda, WarioWare, RayMan, Elebits), I'm truly not bothered by the "old-gen" look to the graphics. The games are fun. That's what matters to me.

                            Re: Official Wii Discussion

I never had a problem with the cable between the remote and the nunchuck until I started playing SSX (which I love by the way!). But that was only the first couple days when I was flailing my arms around trying to do the tricks, now I understand how the controls work and I don't have that problem anymore. I'm not sure if I'll get a wireless one, but I might. Oh yeah, and the sound on my wii remote is down to its lowest setting.

As for the graphics, they really don't matter that much to me, maybe because I don't own a PS3 or 360. I've played those systems before but never was so impressed with the actual gameplay graphics (not cutscenes and stuff that I skip) that I had to get one right away. I agree that most of the Wii graphics look similar to Gamecube games, but I wasn't under the illusion when I bought it that it would have much better graphics. Maybe it is possible and they just haven't gotten into it yet. The whole selling point of the Wii is the new gameplay both for brand new games and putting new spins on old franchises like Mario and Sonic.

I haven't had that much trouble with the nunchuck either. Needless to say, if they come out with wireless nunchucks, I'll buy them.

try something like MLB 2k7 for 360 or Motorstorm for PS3 and you will see how great things are in store for the new gen of consoles. This is just the start and those games look outstanding. I haven't played Gears of War, so I can't tell you about that, but everyone says it looks great. F1 for PS3 looks amazing from what I can tell as well.

As far as the Wii, those things still can't be found very easily. What's up with that? Why can't Nintendo make enough? I never hear anyone hardly talking about them so I just don't understand the scarcity. I know people are buying them up, but I just can't see how the demand is higher than the production. Anyone heard if Nintendo is going to increase production on them?

I have decided not to buy one due to the fact that I don't see any games that I am interested in. That might change with a new Mario adventure and being able to walk in somewhere and actually buy, or at least, play one.
