I did not see a beta trial for home. The folding@home experiment or what have you is up and running. There are no new demos or trailers or downloadable games in the store... maybe later today that will update. I thought that GRAW2 was supposed to have a demo out today for the PS3 but maybe I am wrong.

And now... drumroll please.... WE HAVE BACKGROUND DOWNLOADING! and yes.... yes.... IT WORKS WHILE YOU ARE PLAYING A GAME FROM A DISK!!!! (pauses for crowd cheers). When you go to download an item it gives you the option to put it in background downloading. Then you can do whatever else that you want to do and check back on the downloading progress by going under the Network tab and scrolling down to Download Management which shows you what you are downloading and at what percentage it has completed. I am very excited to see this, but now just need some downloads to use this with.

Haven't checked what other, if any, new things are also included with this latest update.

me too, it's not there, bummer.

        here's what we got.

The PLAYSTATION®3 System Software version 1.60 update includes the following:

        Featured Content
Folding@home connectivity, background downloading of content from the PLAYSTATION®Store, support for Bluetooth® keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.
        Folding@home

The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford University’s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine™, PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program ten times faster than your average home PC. Once PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the appropriate logo on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. Then, when the PS3 system is left on and reaches idle mode, it will automatically begin a simulation and, once completed, send information back to a central computer. Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.
        Enhanced Downloading

Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB’s Network icon.
Remote Play by way of the access point

This feature, enabling you to access photos, videos, andmusic on your PS3 system's hard drive from a nearby PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), will be available for the 20GB configuration, when utilizing an external Wi-Fi router or local wireless access point.
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support / Full size keyboard

Support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology has been added. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3’s built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).
        Disc Auto-Start

This new option under System Settings allows you to choose whether or not a disc should start automatically upon inserting the disc or turning on your PS3 system.
        Blu-ray Disc Rewriteable (BD-RE) Support

PS3 system can now playback BD-RE discs (version 3.0).

Nice, but still not near the "massive update" it was supposed to be. Missing features that were speculated to be included.

I could be wrong but v1.60 is just Phase 1 of the bigger picture for the PS3. I could also be wrong but the software download might have a size limitation so as not to kill their servers when everyone is trying to download the same file from all over the world. Just speculation on my part.

In honestly the massive update was just rumors. Sony never came and said what will be delivered. Us PS3 users said what we wanted and hoped it would be delivered. Since what we wanted was simple, downloading, wallpaper, music... etc.

You could be right Rodster but I doubt it. I just don't see Sony releasing a surprise update. But at least your hoping because for now that is all us Sony owners have is hope.

Can somebody please explain what the big deal about "folding@home" is? Is there really a need for it in a home video game console? Am I missing something?

Also, someone needs to test Blu-ray playback, stat.

                      • XMB customization, such as background pictures and colors
                      • XMB multi-tasking capabilities that'll let you do voice or video chat while you browse the XMB or play games
                      • redesigned PS Store front end
                      • new audio playback animations
                      • additional photo album features
Again all of this was speculation, but it was being speculated by reliable sources, so I would have thought at least a few of these would actually be in it.

What the hell is "Folding at Home"?

I just got the update, downloaded the software, and saw a map with some molecular crap going on in the lower right.

                        I don't get it...

I know this has been said before, but I'd figure I would chime in. I actually updated via USB device and it only took ten minutes (at the most) to update the system as opposed to the half hour the last two took me. I wish they would allow the playstation store (when there's some good stuff on it) to be accessed via pc and transferred with the USB for better speed. Just a thought.

That would be extremely nice. I have never updated through the PS3, always off of a USB. SO much faster, theres absolutely no reason not too.
