Nintendo's New 3DS Game Is Like Animal Crossing On Acid

With a dash of The Sims, a chunk of Animal Crossing, and a liberal injection of Robot Chicken, this might be the weirdest 3DS game we've seen in North America so far.

It's called Tomodachi Life, and it's out on June 6 for 3DS. Here's Nintendo describing the game:

Everyone you know, and everyone you wish you knew, should prepare to meet their Mii maker – you! – as you build a bustling fantasy population of friends, family and even celebrities, all in one wild and hilarious world. The real emotional connection you already share with your Mii characters will keep you glued to the drama, intrigue and hilarity that ensues as everyone goes about their extraordinary daily lives, evolving and interacting in unpredictable and often uproarious ways.

But that description doesn't really capture how bizarre this game is. Watch Nintendo's insane 10-minute Tomodachi Life video for a more thorough look:

        That was ... interesting.

Probably will be a lot of fun, though.

I wanted Tomodachi collection since the original released on the DS. I'm glad it's finally coming west as a game staring my large collection of Miis is more interesting to me than Animal Crossing can ever be.

Threw in the towel on SMT IV the other day. No sense in continuing to play a game that was just continually leaving me frustrated. Probably wasn't the best RPG to start out with, but hey, you live and learn. I can see myself enjoying an RPG that doesn't focus on demon fusion and the like, and that isn't as brutally difficult as SMT IV was.

I've been playing a lot of Animal Crossing New Leaf recently. Smart choice by the makers of this game to freshen things up by making your character the mayor of the town you live in.

Probably jump into one of the Mario titles, or maybe Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon.

Have really neglected my 3DS but have been playing it lately. Are there any must plays? I've played Mario 3D land, Pokemon X, Yoshi's New Island. I just realized New Super Mario Bros 2 existed and am going to play that next.

First two were great; I didn't care for Yoshi. No real challenge unless you go for 100% on every level. (basically beat the level without getting hit much at all to get the 30/30 star health point) It felt like a lesser version of the original.

How is Mario & Luigi Dream Team?

Sorry to hear that, but yeah, you're jumping into the deep end of the pool with SMT as a newcomer to the genre. Even though I think SMT IV is the most accessible and easiest mainline SMT game, it's certainly not newcomer friendly. It's not just the many mechanics that can be overwhelming, but that unlike a lot of other JRPGs, Buffs/Debuffs rule. Matador in SMT III: Nocturne claimed many controllers in the process of teaching people this.

Person 4 Golden on Vita is a much easier game and would be the best gateway into SMT, especially with its very easy setting, but you still have to fuse demons. It sounds like you should start with FF IV Complete Collection --> FF VI --> Chrono Trigger. I would recommend Golden Sun if that was on the 3DS VC.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is great.

I actually picked up Golden Sun Dark Dawn for the DS (still have a DSi that I use) over the weekend, as I had that recommended to me by a few people. Certainly not as intimidating as SMT IV. I also picked up Chrono Trigger.

Would Bravely Default be a good one to try, as it has the ability to adjust difficulty at any point?

Dark Dawn is okay, but I don't think it's nearly as good as the first two. Be warned though, the dialogue in the Golden Sun series is incredibly verbose.

No idea about Bravely Default. I still have yet to play.

Bravely Default is great, but it really falls into "terrible" territory at the end of the game. It may actually turn you away from JRPGs if you aren't a fan of them already.

I gutted through it after taking a few weeks off of it because I saw what was coming and for them to do that to their story (which, again, was basic) was sad. The mechanics of the game were very well done, though.

Demo for Mario Golf: World Tour is out in EU today, NA demo on April 24:

International Tournaments Put the “World” in Mario Golf: World Tour

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–When Mario Golf: World Tour launches for the Nintendo 3DS system on May 2, it will feature robust regional and worldwide online tournaments hosted by Nintendo, as well as custom tournaments that can be created by players. All players who own the game and have a wireless broadband Internet connection can enter the Nintendo-hosted tournaments by simply checking their SpotPass notifications for upcoming and available tournaments, playing in the event and uploading their scores before the event deadline. Players can even monitor their progress by checking the leaderboards to see where they stand. Tournaments can be accessed in Mario Golf mode or using one of the entry machines in the new Castle Club. There will be a variety of different tournaments, ranging from larger competitions to smaller-scale events like longest-drive challenges, coin-gathering challenges or even speed golf.

Nintendo is also collaborating with Callaway Golf (a global golf gear manufacturer) to host its own series of special in-game tournaments that will begin on May 22. The tournaments will be activated using the SpotPass feature, and all players who participate will receive in-game digital Callaway Golf items such as golf clubs and golf balls, which will enhance the players’ stats when used by their Mii characters. Winners of all in-game tournaments – including the Callaway tournaments – are determined by the highest submitted score, and winners will receive in-game coins that can be used to acquire more gear in Toad’s Shop in Castle Club. Starting at launch, a schedule for select tournaments will be available at http://mariogolf.nintendo.com/tournaments.

In addition to tournaments, the Mario Golf: World Tour game rounds out its suite of online multiplayer features by letting players create public or private communities. Want to play a multiplayer match with only Birdo as a playable character? Want to limit the number of Ice Flower item shots players can use? Want to slow down the wind on golf courses like DK Jungle, Bowser’s Castle and Sky Island? By creating communities and private tournaments, players can customize every aspect of the multiplayer experience to form a vast amount of fun new challenges.

Players eager to tee off in Mario Golf: World Tour will get a chance to try the game before launch when a downloadable demo is released in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS on April 24.

Mario Golf: World Tour will launch in stores and in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS on May 2 at a suggested retail price of $29.99. For more information about the game, visit http://mariogolf.nintendo.com.

I gave up on Bravely default during that bull**** they called a final act. I just couldnt take it anymore and was extremely disappointed that thats the way they thought the game should go. Completely transparent way to artificially extend the game. That studio should be ashamed of themselves for it. If you want to extend the game for ****s and giggles at least be creative about it. I see how they thought they were creative with it but it fell flat. I just stopped caring about anything in the game during that stretch it was THAT obnoxious for me.

Everything but the tail end of the story in that game was stellar. Gameplay was great, the wide variety of party combinations was fun. Tinkering with your party to get the right gimmick going was really fun but I feel like once you get a groove near the end game, you can pretty much power through it with no difficulty. But still you can alleviate that by simply switching your party up to a less OP one. The Brave/Default system was a much welcomed mix up to standard JRPG gameplay, as well as the adjustable encounter rate.

They did so many good things but the end game can potentially kill your whole vibe on the game. Which happened to me. All things considered, I recommend it for anyone with a 3DS. Its still worth the buy lol.

That really is a great game. Rockstar put a lot of effort into making a quality title for the DS. I don't know if they'll ever do a project like Chinatown Wars again, but at least the one game they did give us holds up over time.
