Without getting into exclusives and small technical differences, what is the justification for the extra $100?

Is it Kinect addition only?

Or is there an actual functional benefit that the Xbox One will provide over the PS4 (like tv integration or whatnot)?

They charge what they think they can get away with while maintaining the highest return possible. We saw the same thing with the ps3 this gen.

Also, to those thinking that this is a bad move for future pricing reasons I have a question for you.

Why do you think Steam-like sales would be possible? MS has been on record saying game prices would be 59.99. MS/Sony cannot sell games at a discount online and be full price at retail. Do you know how pissed off the Walmarts and Targets of the world will be?

Also, realize that Steam isn't doing sales out of the goodness of their hearts. Steam is competing with Amazon, Green man gaming, GameFly, GameStop, GoG and others for your digital distribution dollars. Who would MS/Sony compete with on the digital distribution front? Nobody. They would have a monopoly on distribution due to the closed nature of the system. Game budgets keep going up and up, prices aren't going to magically drop. We're lucky they are staying at $60.

If you have no competition, you don't magically pass savings on to the consumer. You sit there and enjoy the extra boost in revenue. It's business 101.

Where (and why) do those people think that going digital will cause price drops?

I don't understand why they had to take away Family Sharing for those who choose to buy digital only and I don't understand why they had to take away the 24 hr check-ins. Why not make every game come with a code, and give players a choice on rather to play Offline (don't enter code, you still can play online but don't have to be connected to do so) or Online (enter code and be subject to a 24hr check in.)
Guess Im going to GameStop to cancel my BF4 and Ryse pre-orders, because im going digital only this gen.

Put it this way.. MS clearly know something we don't, otherwise they wouldn't of considered it an advancement themselves.

That's telling me something..

They were just trying to rush everyone into the all digital age. It'll eventually happen, but to try and force it was a dumb move. Leave it like it is and it will eventually die off if digital sales prove to be the way the masses want, like Steam did for PC gaming.

It still costs $100 more. That's not a drop in the bucket for a lot of people.

I think it will balance things out more, keep the people who were jumping ship to PS4 because of the DRM policies. I don't really think it gives MS a clear edge.

I agree $499 is a lot of money and even with out all the restriction the price point will still play a big role in which system gamers will purchase.

Microsoft in my opinion made a great move. They got blasted for the direction they wanted to layout the XBOX One , and they changed it and did this very quickly.

Now if the Kinect is just a novelty piece I would suggest that they make a second sku for the XBOX one without the Kinect and sell it for $399. That would help them regain more of the customers that they lost. At this point they only gained some back, but not all with the price point at $499.

In a way I agree. I think the change is welcome by the majority though.. Obviously.

The question that now comes to mind for me is.. What next? And I'm not talking about the X1 either. MS clearly wanted to get the jump on making games and content digital, as that is most likely the future. Whether or not it is too early for it, we don't know. That future lies in the hands of the companies such as Sony and MS, as one day, things will change.

None of us, as far as I know, are aware of how much MS invested into this idea. The damage may have already been done on the consumer end, but does this also to damage to their plans in the future?

Also, I do not see any reverse on the Kinect bundle, but maybe a possible price drop, but not too the PS4 level, it will remain the more expensive one I think. MS can't back out on two of their plans now after this, nothing worse than looking like a fool in the public eye.

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

• No more always online requirement
• The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
• All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
• An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
• All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
• No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
• Region locks have been dropped

This. Give me all these things and MS would have my money right now.

Take away DRM, check in's and forced Kinect and I am not complaining at all. I would happily live in Xbox One and PS4 land.

Go ahead and pre order your XBOX ONE now guys.

They had the right idea in mind, and the approach of "Why do it later when you can do it now" was a risk. Personally I think if they had of kept it in place, I think the X1 from release onwards would by default have the upper hand over the next decade, purely because in time majority of games will be digital.

Still wont get one at launch but will definitely get one later because of the changes. Most of the launch next gen games are cross-platform and I still have a TON of games to play on the 360. At launch, I'll only need one next-gen platform so I'll go with the cheaper one right now.

With that said, I'm proud that gamers were able to force MS' hand and get them to change its policy. Power of the preorder.

I agree with the cross platform games. All the games I play on my 360 currently, I can play on the PS3.

I'm looking 2-3 years down the road. I honestly see the PS4 having the better exclusives, hands down. I will get an Xbox One eventually, just not at launch.

The damage has already been done for me.

I wont be getting a console untill christmas so that will give me a month or so to see what both console are like and what people are thinking. Still leaning towards ps4 tho.

Just out if curiosity, what are people's problem with kinect being included? I don't play Kinect myself, but it's inclusion isn't an issue for me at all.

I think theres a chance it may happen, but MS have to balance things out. The policy change has most certainly put a positive outlook on the X1. But don't get too hasty.

MS have to tread carefully. It's a balancing act between the consumer, money, and the publics opinion. Going back on the Kinect idea is, as far as I know, actually quite difficult. Why? As my knowledge goes the X1 is designed to use Kinect, and not as an optional feature like the 360. That would in turn surely mean having to put a delay on manufacturing and re-programming the X1? That's not an overnight job, and they can't miss out on Winter sales.

In regards to a price drop, it would be welcomed by many. But I can't see them equaling the PS4 price. It would essentially make them look like fools to the media and the public eye because again they would be backtracking, admitting they were wrong. Yes they want to make sales but they also don't want bad PR.

Money. Consumer views. Publics eye. Each has to be balanced out.

The majority of games ARE digital right now.

There's nothing stopping you from purchasing digitally on release dates.

Again, that article supports the fallacy that MS will willingly give money away when there is no competition for distribution on consoles.

It has nothing to do with DRM. GoG has sales all the time (they are having a huge one right now) and their whole shtick is #NoDRM. It's even the name of their sale.

Sales don't happen when one company runs everything, hence the monopoly laws we have here in the US. Gaming consoles going purely digital will not see prices drop. MS/Sony could charge whatever they wanted in a digital world when they have no competition. You don't get ahead in business by giving away money.
