Also, to those thinking that this is a bad move for future pricing reasons I have a question for you.
Why do you think Steam-like sales would be possible? MS has been on record saying game prices would be 59.99. MS/Sony cannot sell games at a discount online and be full price at retail. Do you know how pissed off the Walmarts and Targets of the world will be?
Also, realize that Steam isn't doing sales out of the goodness of their hearts. Steam is competing with Amazon, Green man gaming, GameFly, GameStop, GoG and others for your digital distribution dollars. Who would MS/Sony compete with on the digital distribution front? Nobody. They would have a monopoly on distribution due to the closed nature of the system. Game budgets keep going up and up, prices aren't going to magically drop. We're lucky they are staying at $60.
If you have no competition, you don't magically pass savings on to the consumer. You sit there and enjoy the extra boost in revenue. It's business 101.
Where (and why) do those people think that going digital will cause price drops?
