    Re: Xbox One

Idk, it seems like there is information that is missing here.

I'm not seeing the point of a daily one time connection, or a connection before playing the game. There has to be more to it.

The digital download angle makes sense, but even then once I download it, it should be there for me to play on or offline. If i need to download it again, I should be able to do so at my leisure.

You also have to have an internet connection to even play the game for the first time.

But that's not really what concerns me. What concerns me is that I have to go online once every day to have my xbox's function of being able to play games turned on...then you're telling me I can shut down my internet and be able to play it offline after that.

Why not have it to where the person only has to register the key the first time and then let them play the game completely offline, since they've already registered said game (presumably already payed for) under their gamer tag? Why force the issue on both ends?

      Thoughts?

I guess Microsoft doesn't care about those people because they'll make more money off of someone who is connected to their marketplace rather than someone who is just paying buying games.

Even if they made people register, that person is going to have to have an internet connection for them to check the code.

Maybe that's info we'll learn as we get closer to E3. I'm giving the benefit here, but I could be wrong. I do agree though, it seems some info is missing as to why.

Exactly. I know there are some people with more valid concerns, but in general the internet aspect won't impact me at all (in real life).

Yeah, it's an annoying requirement for sure though, hence why it rubs people the wrong way.

It is interesting that MS has only officially stated that there will be a used game system. Phil from MS (I forget his last name) was making comments about the 24 hours and stuff but it's not officially confirmed by others.

I'm sure it'll end up being true, but I also think that some of all this stuff is in flux.

Do these people that travel all the time take their 360's or PS3's with them? Seems like a huge pain in the rear. If you were traveling all the time wouldn't you game on a laptop?

The internet connection doesn't bother me, I'm gonna have internet at my house. I don't play used games much and I really don't care much about the exclusive games. Yes I would like to have "The Show", but I'm not a big enough baseball fan for that to have an impact on my console purchase.

My only gripe is not really with the Xbox One, but more of my situation. My wife is not going to want me gaming in the living room. I want to use all the features but it may have to be in my man cave. I've got a few months to figure this out. Maybe the TV features of the Xbox 1 will be enough to persuade my wife, lol.

I'll probably get the Xbox 1 on launch day, but I am still trying to keep an open mind about which console I'll get after I have all the information. I'm afraid I've become an "Xbox guy". I'm trying to fight it, but I guess I just like what I like. I remember struggling over whether to switch from Playstation over to the original Xbox. I decided to switch then and unless something really changes, I guess I will probably stick with Xbox.

I'm getting X1 on release day, but it may come down to the Xbox Live and wether both the 360 and X1 will allow the same gamertag. I don't want to give up my 360 just yet, but the PS3, which is a BlueRay player at the moment, will go first.

                    1.) Fair point.

2.) Completely hypothetical, as I don't do it myself (I just leave my Xbox turned off). But, back to the point, it sounds like that would be doable right?

3.) What exactly are you saying? That's it's an additional security measure in place? What is it stopping?

On an entirely seperate subject, who thinks it's going to be possible to play games off of flashdrives instead of the hardrive of the Xbox1?

                      2. I don't know, it may be doable but Microsoft hasn't said what would happen if you aren't connected or miss the check.

                      3. I'm saying that there's no way for the console to verify the code without going online to check if it's valid.

The internet in my home is spotty at best. My xbox isnt connected to the internet because I dont need it to be for anything I do on it. My PS3 is connected only because it has wifi in it (my 360 is an old model) but I wouldnt know the difference if it were not connected. I dont use online multiplayer often at all.

The One changes all of that (probably the PS4 as well). But thats not even the worst of it. Now I HAVE to be online to register my CD to even play the game; even the first time. That is completely bogus. There are millions of active game consoles that are not online. This is a bull**** way to connect each box to microsft so they can more or less control what their box does. Its lame.

And for guys who have no qualms about it because their box is always on, or their internet provider is God himself, Im happy for you. But its still an issue for others.

                            Re: Xbox One

This is sort of off-topic, but it applies to the gaming industry as a whole (X1, PS4, and beyond).

As someone who enjoys collecting video games, I find the whole process of digital-only distribution very disconcerting. I realize the future is very well headed in that direction, but I'm just not a fan of that. I like the tangible product in my hands so that, when I pay for it, I can say I own that product.

Digital products tend to blur the "ownership" factor. When you download a game, do you really own it, or are you just paying for a license to use that product? This is a topic being discussed to death and I just wanted to throw my hat in as hoping the physical product does not go away.

Plus the whole experience of going out to the store to purchase the game is another element lost in digital distribution. Sure some of that is already lost via internet sales delivered to your door, but I don't always buy physical media that way. I would think driving people away from retail stores would be bad for business, as sometimes when people shop, they buy things impulsively.

There are also other issues, like the possibility of a hard drive failing causing a loss of all purchased data. I like having the actual source if for nothing else but a backup in case that ever did happen. Physical collections can also be resold, but I suppose a secondary market could develop for digital content as well if the developers/manufacturers allow for it. Some digital content has a pretty strong secondary market (see MTGO).

You have a completely valid concern, and I'm interested to see how MS answers someone who can't get internet (in theory). 10% (or something) of Xboxes never get connected online (some article I saw had a quote from a study)....No matter the exact percentage it's not tiny. I think they'll have to address this more, they just didn't want to get into it at the announcement.

We do this on the PC a ton all ready (See Steam), so it's not really a new concept. People are just angry because it hasn't been as forced on consoles.

When you buy a PC game you can't resell it anymore. You buy it and you own it.
