Xbox One
Not going to continue an Xbox-centric thread in the PS4 thread that's since died, but MS released some facts given the recent article downplaying backward compatibility:
@xboxenigma
Some q’s today on back compat use. Roughly 50% of xbox one owners have played, over 508 million hrs of gaming enjoyed.

Business insider had a decent write up on BC and why sonys comments are kind of troubling. I tend to lean this way myself

Re: Xbox One
Really wish that Microsoft would post how many hours Xbox One games have been played. Would love to know how it stacks up against Xbox 360 games.Comment

Sorry but this just isn't impressive to me at all. Backwards Compatibility is a great feature and a consumer friendly move but at the same time, it's overrated and overhyped. Xbox One owners want new studios, new IP's and new first party exclusives. Not backwards compatibility.
And to be perfectly honest, as an Xbox One owner, if im talking more about how great Backwards Compatibility is compared to the actual Xbox One exclusives, that should tell me to sell the damn thing, buy an Xbox 360 and call it a generation. Because to me, that's just sad. Owning a current gen console but playing last gen games on it to me is extremely funny.
Backwards Compatibility doesn't sell consoles. GAMES, new and current games along with NEW IP's or reinventing old IP's into making them feel new again is what Xbox One needs to be all about. Backwards Compatibility is a great consumer and fan friendly move but that's it. Nothing more and nothing less.
In summary, Backwards Compatibility is great if it exists but if not, no biggie. As for Sony, they have sold 60M consoles, twice as much as Xbox One and while there's several reasons why this is, it's mainly because of one thing - GAMES. PERIOD.
As someone who owns both consoles, Horizon Zero Dawn blows away every single Microsoft Xbox One exclusive and the only one that comes close is Forza Horizon 3 and considering that's a racing game says something and it's not good.
Give me NEW STUDIOS.
Give me NE IP's.
Give me GAMES.
It's not hard or complicated. Just takes time but I have no problem waiting. Now, give me State of Decay 2 this October and I'll be a satisfied Xbox One owner this year.Comment

Re: Xbox One
Yes, let's continue to advocate that our consoles should play less games. You aren't even making a logical argument anymore as you make a case against it's popularity and then use it's popularity as a reason to get rid the console because it's a feature you find no value in.

Re: Xbox One
Like EA Access and Xbox Game Pass, Backwards Compatibility is an excellent consumer friendly option for those that want it. Me personally, I prefer looking towards the present and more importantly the future. Not the past. If I wanted to play the games of the past, I would have simply kept my past gen consoles in order to do so.
It reportedly took Microsoft two years to implement backwards compatibility and regardless of how you want to look at it, that still cost the company money, time and resources that quite honestly, could have been better spent elsewhere like towards a new studio, perhaps a new IP/franchise, etc.
For argument sake, if Sony said that they would give me Backwards Compatibility for PlayStation 3 games but they would have to sacrifice a studio meaning close it down or cancel a game or two, I would say hell no!!!. I rather have the studio stay intact and get future games but that's just me.
Microsoft rejected Lionhead Studios mature rated Fable game that they wanted to develop and by leaked reports, could have been awesome. Microsoft cancelled an RPG that was contracted to Obsidian Entertainment that almost made that developer go bankrupt. Not saying that any of it is connected but let's say it is - would you really choose Backwards Compatibility over either or both of those two games? Even if they didn't appeal to me or didn't end up being good, I would still choose those two games over Backwards Compatibility for one simple reason - if I want to play Xbox 360 games, I would just go buy an Xbox 360.
Backwards Compatibility was/is an excellent consumer friendly move. I never said it wasn't but I would prefer them to focus and concentrate more on the present and future because that's what will win back the loyal Xbox 360 gamers that they lost to PlayStation 4. It's not going to be Backwards Compatibility.
Yes, let's continue to advocate that our consoles should play less games. You aren't even making a logical argument anymore as you make a case against it's popularity and then use it's popularity as a reason to get rid the console because it's a feature you find no value in.
The only value the feature truly has is convenience in which you can have the games you want on one console as opposed to two. That's the true value. Other than that, not so much because if you look at the list, outside of maybe ten games, are really any of them worth playing? Probably not. And even then, some of the old games like Halo or Gears of War 1 were re-mastered so why anyone want to play the old Xbox 360 version when they can play the updated and re-mastered Xbox One version?
Also, if anyone is playing more Xbox 360 games than Xbox One games on Xbox One or get more hyped and excited for Xbox 360 game announcements coming to Xbox One as opposed to Xbox One games themselves, then really, what's the point in owning an Xbox One? That's like me owning my PS4 Pro but all im doing is playing PS3 games via PS Now. Sorry but I just don't see why gamers make a big deal out of backwards compatibility when it's not a big deal at all. If it's available, great but if not, oh well. Not a big deal.
I know you don't like software resets and if PS5 isn't backwards compatible that you'll most likely pass on it but why? I don't get this. My first console was NES. When SNES came out, I never once thought about playing NES games on it. Same with N64 and GC. Same with Sega consoles. Seriously, it makes no sense to me.
When I bought PS4 and Xbox One, it was to play current and future games. Not past games. The funny thing is that if it wasn't for Sony's PS2, backwards compatibility wouldn't even exist and thus, wouldn't even be discussed.
None of this even takes into account having to pay for the game a second time or more if you're a Nintendo fan.
When PlayStation 5 eventually releases, I don't want it to be BC with PS4 or any past PS console. It's bad enough that the first year or two is nothing but re-masters and cross gen ports. I sure as hell don't want decade old games on my brand new $400+ PlayStation 5 console. LOL.
But if you enjoy playing decade old games, go ahead as no one is stopping you. It's just that for me personally, when I buy a new console, it's in no way, shape or form so I can play past games but like I always say, to each their own bud.Comment

He keeps saying stuff like "well if you're more hyped for older games over new games, yada, Yada, yada....." like somebody here has said that or something and typing paragraph after paragraph based on hypotheticals. Hard to even get through those posts.Last edited by ricky24; 06-09-2017, 09:51 AM.Comment

Re: Xbox One
I see both sides. On one hand I agree with ricky24 that backwards compatibility is a nice feature and some people will genuinely want and use it.
However, I maybe a shade more agree with daniel that it's a feature a lot of people want but not many use and I think time and resources could have been better spent on new IPs.
So I see both sides but have to go a bit more with daniel says in regards to I personally never really play many old games so it's more of a novelty than anything tangible.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

The people that work on BC are not working on new ips regardless. They are not even developers its on the engineering side. No new studios or games are being cancelled because of BC. Those are the hypotheticals that are silly and really make his posts though to get though.
Of course some people will never use it. That's a given. There are some games I will never play. Doesn't mean I'd prefer those studios stop making them. There shouldn't even be two sides here. Just don't use is it if you don't want to.Last edited by ricky24; 06-09-2017, 10:48 AM.Comment

You know in thinking about it, BC would have done best for Microsoft if it was a selling point up front before the consoles were released. That may have saved a lot of migration from the Xbox 360 crowd to Sonys.
It coming later on down the road is nice but doesn't have near the impact as it would have at that point in time.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

All good points, not saying I disagree here but BC does take resources I think was his point.

I think Microsoft is fine resource wise. That's my point. I highly doubt they are sacrificing the future in favor of BC. I agree with the rest of your post and their mindset moving forward shows they do too.Comment
