Just done with the PS4. In April I found a 1 TB Xbox one on clearance for $105. So I grabbed, having never intended to play Xbox this gen. But I had always wanted to play the Forza games. Anyway, a promo came up at Gamestop this week to get up to $200 for the PS4 towards a Switch. So I figured "why not" since I had wanted a Switch since it was announced, and I only paid $200 for the PS4 slim on Black Friday 2016. So it ended up being a series of random circumstances that led to the move.

My main reason for wanting the PS4 was the Show and Gran Turismo, but the last few months I've just had more fun with XB's arcadey exclusives. (Also, I played the GT Sport beta and was underwhelmed...I played TONS of GT5 and GT6.) The Switch trade in deal gets you $150 for the XB1 as well, so it came down to Forza vs. the Show and since I've played the Show for 10 years, I chose the change of pace.

Hopefully The Show (and Gran Turismo for that matter) on PS5 will be groundbreaking.

I don't understand selling and buying systems just based upon certain games. Don't you think another PS4 game will come along down the road and you'll just want that and feel like you need to get a PS4 again?

Just buy both systems and be done with it is how I feel. But to each their own of course.

Didn't you guys see the ps4 pro actually is able to do a firmware update to be on par with the Xbx after the new amd cards were released.... It's like they had this secret info the whole time https://youtu.be/3wEZXHa02Gk heres the source, this guy is usually right when it comes to this stuff

It's Rapid Packed Math (RPM), yea I heard of it. The question is if devs are going to take advantage of it. Good news is it seems so. Wolfenstien 2 (MachineGames) and Far Cry 5 (Ubisoft) will be coding it. It'll improve the PS4 but won't be superior to the Xone.

It is a PS4 Pro only feature.

It's Rapid Packed Math (RPM), yea I heard of it. The question is if devs are going to take advantage of it. Good news is it seems so. Wolfenstien 2 (MachineGames) and Far Cry 5 (Ubisoft) will be coding it. It'll improve the PS4 but won't be superior to the Xone.

I mainly love sports and racing games, and most of the PS4 top games on the horizon are more "serious" single player action/adventure games. It might do me some good to skip the Show for awhile, and GT Sport is going in a direction that just doesn't excite me. I grew to really enjoy Driveclub, but I've had my fill of it...wish there had been a sequel.

Sure, I'd love to keep the PS4 just to see what happens between now and the PS5, but 3 systems won't fly in my house, if you know what I mean.

Although Sony isn't scheduled to be at Gamescom, they do have a number of playing booths that will be available with possible news and unnamed 2017 releases. We still should be getting more hands on previews from many of the gaming sites.

Hardware is always only as powerful as the software written for it. As programmers find new ways to program the software they can get more out of the hardware. It's why a game programmed for the PS2 at launch looks like crap compared to a game programmed for the PS2 several years later.

The Technical explanation;

One of Vega's key features is Rapid Packed Math technology, which allows 16-bit operations to be used between 32-bit operating, effectively enabling mixed-compute workloads.

Now all calculations need the same level of precision for accurate results, so if mixed precision is available and 16-bit operations can be calculated at a faster rate developers could utilise 16-bit operations to deliver enhanced performance with no visual downsides.

This will allow developers to conduct certain calculations faster, allowing frames to be completed at a faster rate and increase the framerate and responsiveness of future gaming titles.

What needs to be noted here is that not all in-game calculations can be used with Rapid Packed Math, so don't expect a 2x performance increase in games that can utilise it. The performance impact of this technology will depend on how much game code can be simplified with rapid packed math, which is a factor that will no doubt change on a game by game basis, and how much time developers are willing to spend on a feature that not all graphics cards support.

If you are thinking that developers won't support this feature you would be wrong, with the development team behind Far Cry 5 already confirming that they will be making use of the feature. The PS4 Pro also supports 16-bit mixed precision, giving developers more reason to create games with this feature in mind.

AMD has also been working with Futuremark to create a benchmark that will showcase the potential of Rapid Packed Math, already showing a 25% gain in operation count in certain tasks. At this time it is unknown if 3DMARK Serra will ever be released to the public.

one other key aspect of this feature is that Mixed Precision is supported by DirectX 12 and Vulkan, which means that gamers will not need to wait for a standards change before the feature can be used.

At the time of writing it is unknown how much of a performance impact Rapid Packed Math will have in games, though some will no doubt see it as an Async-Compute-like feature that will deliver "free/extra performance" in games that support it.

With AMD's new Vega architecture supporting this feature alongside the PS4 Pro there is no doubt that developers will make use of this feature, though like Async Compute it will likely not be widely adopted for quite some time.
